    I continually admire the dedication of UK astronomers who battle through the crappiest weather to pursue their love of astronomy and astrophotography. My hat is off to you all.

    I was never into astronomy. But after binge viewing your channel I invested 80€ in a used telescope. And a few weeks later I am now stuck in one of the deepest rabbit holes I ever got involved. Seeing your videos and other things online is one thing - Seeing the moon through my own scope in crystal clear quality for the first time in my life was a game changer. Thank you.

      Imagine the moment when you can see "in real time" the rings of Saturn or a few Jupiter's moons. With your own eyes. With your own rig. The rings are so mindblwing that I still have a stupidly big smile on my face every time I think about those nights. Is the moment when you truly realize that those dots on the night sky are actually moons, planets and stars bigger than our own sun.

A Fluorite Takahashi refractor trashed, I'm beyond words it makes for a Clarkson style TopGear episode, "we screwed up but survived" , but this is very good kit for Astronomy folks. Pity.

      Bye bye Takahashi Honored Members Program, this train has left the station. Maybe to be honest all about it will save you from excommunication from the Astro Society.
      I'm really surprised how much just watching this can hurt. Maybe seeing something beeing smashed you only dream of disturbes that much.

      How much would it cost to have it recollimated? Is that a job you can do at home?

    • @gabrielperano
      @gabrielperano 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@RoganGunn Recollimating a refractor is unpractical, compared to a newt where your able to adjust the mirror on the spot with a reference star, you cannot do the same to a refractor due to the way the optics are mounted to the scope e.g. not with adjustable screws. Also refractors consist of multiple optics meaning only 1 would have to be shifted to ruin the image, so its a total guessing game which one is miss aligned, your best bet is to the then entire take & put it back together, which could damage the collimation even more since your basically eyeballing the collimation since your not able to reference to a star on the spot.

    • @RoganGunn
      @RoganGunn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabrielperano Thanks for you reply! I suspected it would be a gargantuan and possibly practically impossible undertaking.
      I have experience taking apart old SLR camera lenses to clean oil off the aperture blades, but in a longer lens like a refractor telescope, which has received a kinetic shock that knocked the collimation off... oof! I'd guess each element is screwed in place in a giant threaded tube (or even glued perhaps) meaning recollimation is not possible without a full factory rebuild. It's not like each element has adjustment screws.
      Can you send the scope back to Takahashi to be factory rebuilt or repaired? Or would that be uneconomical and cost nearly the same as a new one?

    Biscuit, i suggest using Anderson connectors for any power connection on your rig. I had similar problems with cigarette lighters and i stopped using them years ago, no more power failures for me after that. I also recomend boosting the battery's voltage to 13.5 volts for better performance of your gear.

I will risk overnight imaging, but I'm running a radar based rain app for an alarm, and as backup I use a water tank leak detector with a wifi alert fed by a giant funnel to amplify any rain signal. Hopefully those would be enough to save my scope, but I think I've just learned I need a wind alert too! Keep up the videos, your fans are super-fans!

    Oh Rory, I think this is my first message to you, so I will begin with a compliment before I get harsh. I absolutely love your videos, they seem raw, and honest, and your passion for astronomy is contagious. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment.
    Now, I need to be harsh. WTH were you thinking when you left your Tak outside? I almost cried. My only solace was in thinking this was fake to create self-deprecating humour and drama for your channel. I hope I'm correct. Please let me be correct.
    Anyhow, this was a perfect episode of your wonderful adventures, because I'm looking for a good travel scope with as few compromises as possible. Back in 2017, I purchased a C9.25 Edge HD for the North American solar eclipse. I live in a big city with fairly challenging access to dark skies. Guess how often I've used this big beautiful scope? Maybe 6 times in 5 years. It's just too heavy.
    You've inspired me to sell it all and get a Tak and the tripod you are using! Thank you for the inspiration.
    Clear skies!

    Great To have you Back with such an Epic Video :). Really Well executed. I have a Planetary cam my ZWO 224mc for DSOs as Well. It Does Amazing, especially on my alt-az Mount and 5 inch newtonian

    :( Deep heartfelt condolences for the Tak. I think I cried a little upon seeing it in the wet ground. I hoped to see a message at the end: “No Takahashi were harmed in the making of this video.” A shame it wasn’t CGI. Fun video aside from tragedy

      Leaving equipment outside shows how far he has fallen. He dosent even give a shit anymore. He trashes scopes people save money for half a year to aquire. TH-cam destorys everyone. Thanks but no thanks. I'm over this dude. I really used to look up to him, his disregard for equipment shows me all I need to know.

    Good to see another video, feels like its been way too long, but that is I suppose the crux of running an Astrophotography channel in one of the cloudier countries in the world, it would have been great if you could have had some extra content in-between the cloud cover, maybe something along the lines of a little series on gear tips and tricks/mods or even something describing your photo editing workflow or rig setup in between the challenge videos you set yourself that obviously take a bit of time on the editing and production time front (along with waiting for the right kind of night weather)
    Looking forward to the next one!

    "Biscuit left his scope out in the rain
    I don't think that he can take it
    'Cause he'll have to collimate it
    And he's really only got himself to blame
    Oh no!"
    to the tune of MacArthur Park :)

    It was cool seeing a Indianapolis 500 reference. I work within walking distance of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Great video!

    Probably late to this one, but it's 12V DC. You could easily get a different 12V connector and hub setup and just replace the ends and come out with a better setup for the power.
