- A vigil was held for Notre Dame Cathedral in the streets of Paris. The crowd sang a hymn in tribute to the French landmark that was severely damaged in a massive fire on the Monday of Holy Week for millions of Catholics around the world.

I am an atheist. Some of the comments here are shockingly insensitive and ignorant. Notre Dame Cathedral is architecture, art and history. I was in Paris last year. I visited Notre Dame Cathedral it was beautiful. Stay strong Paris and rebuilt.
And was built FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES at the time it was built. Or do you think they built as just any monument? Basically the Parisians have turned it into a Den of thieves not a house of worship.
as catholic, visiting notre dame is my dream. I hope it will be restored when I get older and have fund and time to travel europe. but theres a big chance france gonna be francenistan in the future.
Same also an atheist but the Nortre Dame is famous and has beautiful history through the survival of many years of wars.

I was saddened by the fire as well, and I am not religious, either. It’s always saddening to lose a grand piece of architecture like that, especially when it has so much history and is beloved by so many (thanks to one Victor Hugo).

i hope it gets rebuilt too. sure it wont be the same. but then again, the notre dame has gone through some reconstruction over the centuries like after the french revolution a lot of the statues were vandalized but were eventually restored. the difference now is that reconstruction is a lot more extensive. but it will be rebuilt eventually. it has to.

But it was and is one of the most important example of Gothic architecture in the world, despite the countless reconstructions and restorations through centuries. I think monuments, all of them, represent a little the identity of the people who cannot and shouldn't be identified only through customs. I honestly believe that their destruction, even though partial, is like killing what is the meaning of being French, as well as a huge loss because of its inestimable value. That's what I mean when I say it's a loss for the whole world. The fact that it has been rebuilt doesn't change this.

A little late. 20 years ago I took my family over there, and it was indeed in very bad shape.. you could not walk too close to it, cuz of the fencing, thru bricks and other stuff falling. Sad to say, New City is the same now a days. Regardless, maybe this will bring the people of the Catholic faith and join them together to rebuild. The "only" tree's for the size they would need, are the great Redwoods, but they need not cut all of them down, but to rebuild those massive beams. The fact that this is such a historic site over 900's years old, makes it a priority to our civilization, at least in the Western World.

Like something in that building can't be replaced but come on people would you rather have someone in your family die or the building on fire. It's not healthy to care about every single life, people die horrible deaths all the time, you'd have to be sad constantly.
