He was great in his role for this movie. I've seen this movie several times, because I love it. Johnny is still very articulate, quiet, without all the jewelry back then.
The way he describe the character, seems so much like himself. Sure I don’t know him personally, but being INFP myself just like Johnny most likely is, he points out parts which resonates with his own personality. I always saw the Gilbert grape character as the closest and most genuinely “Johnny role”.
He was depressed at this point of his life so the character fit perfectly

He was talking about an actually mentally restarted person. He wasn't using it as some sort of insult, so there's really no reason to be "triggered" (which is actually offensive to say in this context)
People still used the word retarded back then when referring to someone who was less advanced mentally....before a bunch of idiots started using the word in a derogatory way or as an insult all over the internet. That's when it started being considered offensive.
Agree! I almost clicked off because of it. But I had to remind myself they used it as an insult and an actual medical term, back during the time of this film, and the film itself also triggered me in a sense of not using an actual disabled individual for the role, but again…during that time they didn’t. Not that they do much, nowadays, but they are slowly starting to.
He played his character well and I understand the “meaning” or whatever behind it, but as a disabled person I have my opinions.
You’re allowed to be upset over it. Don’t let someone tell you there’s no reason to be💛
They filmed WEGG near the outskirts of Austin where I'm from. My mom who was a paramedic at the time was told by her coworkers who were stationed near the film sets said Depp was a major hollywood snob. He'd cut in line at the lunch lines and was just generally a snob. Not sure if that's true I just remember hearing that.
