    I was taking my driver's test and got instructed by my examiner to move into the left lane. I did so, and passed one car and immediately got over to the right lane on my own. Immediately my examiner said "Excuse me, I did not ask you to move back to the right lane!" I called her out saying that I was just obeying the law and it was mandatory for me to move back to the right. She was super chill once I said that though.

      how about warning for first violation, and warning for second violation, $100 fine for 3rd violation, 30 hours community service plus $100 fine for 4th violation.
      most people drive on the left lane because they don't know better, so educate them.
      then you fine them.
      and take times away from them cuz those who drive fast on left lane probably value their time more than their money. if you make $1000 per day, i can see why you would speed everywhere

    Notice how the reporter said tailgating is the number 1 cause of road rage. If someone is being a left lane hog, then the car behind will likely tailgate until the lane hog moves over or the tailgater has enough and passes on the right. So lane hogging causes road rage, which causes tailgating, which causes more road rage.

      The Autobahn is built to handle high speeds. It's extremely smooth, wider lanes, better safety design, and we're talking about local vehicles of high quality. Not some shit Dodge or Ford. Also you don't see trailers, SUVs, and pickups there speeding along. With all of that in mind, it's rare anyone does go insane for speeding. Because it's all around a stupid thing to do. Just American tourists mostly who do it.

    • @Jack-Surreal_Panes

      Yup. Stationed over there for 4 years. first thing one learns is how to do 4 way stops and second is stay right on the highways. You pass and get over, no excuses. You do not even stay over in the left if you want to pass a row of cars. Pass one and get over, then pass again. One does not stay in the left at all, unless they are opened up flying, which you can do because the left is open and people cannot go into the left if they see someone approaching at high speed. Germans follow the laws and they will call the police on your plate and the police will respond.

  • @dacat7522
    @dacat7522 8 ปีที่แล้ว +172

    Dear God. The law in much of the country is clearly stated in the video and some of you are still arguing it?
    The speed limit has nothing to do with it. Left lane is for passing ONLY!
    Common sense applies on multi lane highways= go with the flow of traffic for the lane you are in, each lane to the left hopefully moving slightly faster than the lane to the right, again leaving the far left lane for PASSING ONLY!
    Anticipate your exit from freeways so that you have merged to the right at the prevailing speed to be ready to exit without causing traffic disruption.
    Follow the above simple plan and watch how smoothly traffic will flow.
    Remember, it's not up to you, the ordinary citizen, to actively try to force others to obey traffic laws. Call the police if you witness a problem and steer clear of foolish drivers. DO NOT knowingly block other drivers from changing lanes or speeding, etc. Nothing good will come of it.

      Here are the actual state by state laws: www.google.com/amp/jalopnik.com/5501615/left-lane-passing-laws-a-state-by-state-map/amp?client=safari. But I'd like to add that you can't say it's common sense to apply the law in a place where it doesn't exist. As you said, people can't make up their own laws. People can't expect "keep right except to pass" rule to be in effect if the state doesn't have that rule. In those cases, each lane is both a passing and a traveling lane.

    • @rrpostalagain
      @rrpostalagain 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      thelittlepilgrim The way I read that, in all but a handful of states, the rule is "get the hell over". I lived in KS for a few years and they started ticketing people for blocking traffic in the left lane. I think it's common sense to get over. The few states that have nothing on the books, really should. Traffic "flows" and road systems are designed with this in mind. I'm often surprised people have no concept of blocking traffic, or will even consider themselves the passing lane police, figuring they should stop everyone from speeding.

    People seem to be mixing up speed limit and passing lane. They're completely irrelevant to eachother and you cannot compare them at all.
    If you're not PASSING, you move to the right. It doesn't matter if you're doing the speed limit or 50 above the speed limit. When you're approaching someone going slower, you move to the left, pass them, then pull back to the right. The law says move over, not be the speeding vigilante and slow down the flow of traffic because you're "already doing 15 above, why should I pull over?"
    Here on Long Island, NY, the speed limit is 55 MPH on I-495. But during the morning rush hour, the flow of traffic can be upwards of 80 MPH depending on traffic. Again, if you're not PASSING, you stay out of the PASSING lane.

      On the way back I encountered some dude on Wantagh going southbound who for some reason switched to the left lane when two guys were about to pass him (when he had nothing but open lane in the right). The 1st guy behind him ended up tailgating because of how slow he was (especially for Wantagh which is consistently empty--seriously it's the one highway on Long Island I've gone up to 80 on, and I only just got my license in August) and the 2nd guy had to pass him to the right.

    I was traveling I75 north near Ocala, FL and there was a left lane hog with a driver right on his tail. Finally the driver had enough and went to pass the left lane hog, but was too close and clipped the bumper. The front car spun out of control and rolled 7 or 8 times. We went to go check on her. It was an old lady. Her engine caught fire and we had to drag her out and away from the car. Even though the passing driver hit her, it still goes to show what lady lane hoggery can do.

    If you're not paying attention (doing something other than driving), or are unaware of where you are and what's around you, you have no business driving a vehicle of any kind on America's highways. If you know what you're doing and don't care; i.e., are too selfish and inconsiderate to do the right thing and stay out of the passing lane, you have no business driving a vehicle of any kind on America's highways. I will never understand why people drive in the passing lane for no reason. ...and before any of you left-lane lovers use this argument, let me address it right now: THE SPEED AT WHICH YOU'RE TRAVELING OR WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE DOING THE SPEED LIMIT IS IRRELEVANT. THE SPEED AT WHICH OTHER DRIVERS ARE TRAVELING IS IRRELEVANT. It has nothing to do with speed, it has to do with COURTESY and CONSIDERATION.

    • @saintofconsequence
      @saintofconsequence 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The passing lane only applies in certain jurisdictions.

    • @dmreeoogdaq
      @dmreeoogdaq 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      thelittlepilgrim You are talking in terms of state & local laws. I'm talking in terms of common sense and nationally-accepted rules of common courtesy and consideration.

    • @saintofconsequence
      @saintofconsequence 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you're talking about doesn't apply. You're looking at it like walking down a sidewalk or hallway. On the roads in a vehicle, laws apply. . Moreover, how courteous and considerate is it to speed (break the law) and force law abiders to change what they're doing? Common courtesy would be for everyone to follow the law and then after that, not inconvenience other drivers.

    • @dmreeoogdaq
      @dmreeoogdaq 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      thelittlepilgrim Common courtesy also applies when we are driving vehicles. Most of the problems that occur on America's highways could be prevented if people acknowledged that there are people on the road other than them and drove accordingly. If someone is driving faster than you are, it does not affect you. Let them go by. You are not responsible for enforcing speed limits; most of which were arbitrarily selected by state and local governments so they'd have another source of income.
      However, if someone is driving in the passing lane without passing anyone; especially if they are riding next to a vehicle or vehicles in the right lane, they are impeding the flow of traffic. This causes traffic to back up in long lines of vehicles which are usually travelling bumper-to-bumper or very near it. This is far more dangerous than someone driving 5 or 10 mph over the speed limit.
      Simple common courtesy and consideration is not too much to ask for from people who should not have to be told to practice it.

    • @saintofconsequence
      @saintofconsequence 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But common courtesy would include not breaking the law, and if one is to break the law, not affect others. Speeding does affect others if it causes them to have to change lanes. The courteous thing to do would be for the speeder to do the lane changing. And you talk about other drivers knowing they're not the only ones: That would include lawbreakers knowing THEY'RE not the only ones, and to leave law abiding drivers alone. Yours or anyone's personal opinion of what the speed limit should be doesn't trump what it actually is. My main point is that the burden is on the lawbreaker, and law abiders shouldn't be hassled.

She seemed to be happy to drive faster, as long as she was getting revenge... I didn't cut her off or anything. Yep, that's one of the biggest things I learned from sitting in MA rush-hour traffic. The left lane will be fully stopped while the middle and right-hand lanes keep moving, because no one wants to get stuck behind drivers getting off the interstate at off-ramps so they think "If I move to the left, I won't get stuck." Problem is, EVERYONE has that same thought and turns the passing lane into a parking lot. Once I learned where the heaviest congestion was, I made my move to the right-hand lane and got through it in good time while the other lanes were near-stopped.

      Epicci the problem with the driver education in America is every time they start spreading the word of what we're supposed to do.
      rather than us following what we're being told, we just get violent about noticing the other people that aren't following what we wrer just told.
      every time they try to educate us it turns into road rage because of us blaming the other guy that's not obeying the one law that we cared about during the education process.
      This is what happens in America rather than us following instructions individually.
      You can tell that from the conversations on line hear that people are making every excuse they can to not have to obey any rules or etiquette themselves.
      people keep saying "but I'm not speeding"
      ... but I'm not speeding.
      " but I'm not speeding "... if you're not speeding then no other rules apply to them....

    People that hold up the left lane are only dangerous because the speed limits aren't enforced. It's an unjust system when the reward for obeying traffic laws means you have to be in constant conflict with merging traffic and speeders get a clear path. As far as I'm concerned, it is impossible to impede traffic at or above the posted speed. So if someone driving at the legal speed is a problem to the flow of traffic, either the speed limit isn't being enforced or the speed limit needs to be raised.

I get it, there are situations, and the right lane is definitely the place to drive more slowly.

    I'm an older driver, and tend to drive the speed limit. It is NOT my job, nor anyone else's, to get in the left lane and make you drive the speed limit. If I think you are driving recklessly, I'll call 911 on you, but I'm going to stay out of your way, and in the right lane where I belong
    All cops care about are writing speeding tickets for profit. If they wanted to make a difference, they would write for following too closely, not signaling lane changes, and driving with parking lights on. Those are reckless driving, careless driving, and stupidity, in that order.

      Historically, no one in the valley understands traffic laws and as such we had to surge up the police force to tackle this issue. However, at least initally those cops didnt even understand traffic laws as well. So we had cops breaking traffic laws in police cruizers setting a bad example. Driveing instructors here especially the under 18 ones were dog shit idiots that who would give counter intuitive rules and would loosely judge you solely based on how confident you seemed while driveing, rewarding fake it till you make it behavior. Thats why all those people interviewed are acting like they know the rules despite being dead ass wrong.

    There are four things that need to happen to alleviate this problem. 1. Driver training for ALL drivers, not just teens 17 and under. 2. Completely revamp what is being taught and make it similar to what is taught in Germany and raise the costs paid to the schools accordingly. 3. Make the exams for obtaining a license more intensive. 4. Increase fines for DUI/DWI to include jail time for repeat offenders, as well as for reckless driving, failing to yield for an emergency vehicle, impeding traffic (which would include left lane hogs) and distracted driving.

    This makes no sense. You are effectively reducing all multi lane roads to a one lane road. It would be more reasonable to say "You must keep to the right if you are not going the speed limit." If the traffic is going the speed limit, there can be no legal passing. What's funny is all these people would probably approve of the zipper merge, which encourages full use of all lanes until they end.

      Mark Jones Federal Law requires that your speedometer show accurately to 110 miles an hour because federal law states that passing requires breaking the speed limit temporarily to be safe. the danger only exist when you get so freaky about the exactness of never ever ever breaking the posted limit even while passing be realistic be safe. you passing on a dashed yellow line in a 55 Zone that he expect you to go 80 if you're passing they just expect you not to be going 60 once you get way heading back in your lane

      if you're referring to where I said federal law that has to do with how highways are designed and funded but enforcement is on the state level so uniform vehicle code of the road would be dependent on State to find the specific code material and where it applies to you.
      my reference to speedometers up 210 does not suggest that police officers are going to allow you to go hundred miles an hour. I'm just saying that they do not "expect" you to stop at 71 when the speed limit is 70 just because that's the maximum allowance.

    It's even worse in California. We have carpool lanes, which means that the leftmost lane becomes only accessible to people with 2 or more passengers (3 or more in some counties/cities) or drivers of hybrid/electric vehicles during PEAK RUSH HOURS in the morning and afternoon - basically making a 3 lane section of freeway into a 2 lane section. This, combined with people who go 10mph under the speed limit for absolutely no reason in the lane next to the carpool lane completely fucks over most drivers and extends commute time - all in order to "incentivize" ride-sharing and the purchase and use of electric/hybrid vehicles, neither of which are an option for a large portion of the population.

  • @Slowcarfastbeans

    If everybody moves to the right lane, the left lane is under-utilised. Same for the right lane (because it’s a “merge” lane). Which means everybody piles into the middle 1 or 2 lanes. This increases the density and makes it riskier for everybody. Utilise ALL the lanes but travel at the speed appropriate for that lane.

    Yesterday I was high and low beamed by a truck behind me on a 100k highway when I was driving on the left lane. I took a look at my GPS, I was actually driving 102 or 103 at that time. I was planing to pass a semi truck about 100 meter in front of me. But cars and truck behind me, are driving even faster then me. I got less and less clearance on my right, and less and less distance behind me. So what is the safest way do you guys think?
    (1) speed up to 110 or 115 to pass the semi, then change right?
    (2) keep same 102 speed, andchange to the right lane right away. So the truck behind will not be anoied, but put the fast approaching car (110 speed) 50 meters behind me in danger danger
    (3) keep the same 102 speed and pass the semi smoothly and then change to right lane.
    I did (3) and it took me about 30 seconds to pass the semi. I think I did the safest way.
    Because in (1) case, I may get a ticket if I drive 5 km over speed limit, however most time police give you ticket over 10.
    Also in case (2) i put the fast driving car at right lane in danger. And if i could not judge the speed right, i may have a at fault collision for not change lane safely.
    Now you see me as a bad "slow left lane driver", but I was actually driving it safely at a very reasonable manner. But the problem is the 2 faster driver. The truck behind me tailgating and the car driving at 110 at right lane. 2 speed vs 1 safe driver.

  • @calvinenders1334

    These rules are usually inaccurate. Would be pointless to have 2 or 3 lanes just so people could pass one another. The purpose of having that many lanes is to transport more vehicles through an area. So in that case it is inevitable to have vehicles occupying all lanes. Otherwise you get congestion. I do find it funny when everyone wants this law enforced. But speeding seems to be okay. You can't just pick and choose the laws you want to obey. It's all about everyone's safety. Not some people's convenience. Just saying.

    Its up and down with this issue. If right lanes are congested and passing lane is clear. the drivers that wants to go faster will stay in the passing lane and not want to keep having to pass and keep getting over. that is the issue. Unless right lanes are less congested to allow for safer passing all the time . that is a different story. Move over slow pokes. Right lane should be for speed limit.Middle lanes 5-10. left lane whatever speed is safe for the situation.

    As a Canadian who frequently drives in the USA, I find it hard to understand this bad habit of driving on the left lane when not passing. I heard the Officer in the clip saying that you will get a citation if you do so... Surprise, surprise! I NEVER saw any driver cited in the many years I drove on US roads. BTW, passing on the right is not only caused by the left lane occupied by a slow driver, it's also another bad driving habit of US drivers. As an RV driver, I frequently get passed on the right by super fast drivers who CHOOSE to pas on the right, even though left lane is free. And I don't get passed because I don't belong in my lane, I get passed because getting back to the right lane is dangerous because of those fast right lane drivers coming and blocking my attempted movement. I drove in Europe and of course in Canada and I seldom encounter that kind of behaviour outside of the US.

    Just a FYI folks, the reporter said the PT Cruiser in front was going the allowed speed limit so other had to pass to the right.
