This is fantastic. There are so many jive-ass jazz piano tutorials on TH-cam, but this is the real deal. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow, thanks! I agree there’s a lot of jive stuff out there but also I’m sometimes surprised how much good stuff there is on TH-cam as well …
These are real skills. The second step with the left hand doing bass and melody on its own is already very really impressive, and that's just the beginning. I like how you help us understand the process, but don't try to come up with 'shortcuts' as so many YT videos do. That's okay if it takes years to get really good at it.
Totally! Im still working on it myself...
This video is a real gem, with both masterly constructed and concise educational material and wonderful live music demonstration. Thank you Sam, I hope lots of people get a chance to check it out and enjoy your wealth of knowledge 🙏
Thank you Dor!
Great video!! Thanks for this!
Glad you liked it😀
I'll try it! Seems like Fred Hersch might do some of this in his playing. This is a cool way to break it down.
Yeah Fred for sure. And Keith
Give it a go ! And don’t forget to modify it in any way that fits your level. Have fun …
Wow, that’s incredibly helpful and delivered in a wonderful way, thanks so much! This channel’s subscriptions are going to explode in no time :)
Great! Best tutorial I’ve seen on this topic👏
thank you ...
Quality content!

These clips are amazing Sam well done, skills to work on for life!
Thank you .Agreed, working on them myself…😊
Awesome! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Nitsan! Your welcome.
Great Sam. Met you in Ferrara many years ago! Great player, very humble person. And also great teacher!
thank you ! I have fond memories of Ferrara! The tower...
Hello other vloggers you must be learning here.
Great channel.
Haha! Thank you 😀
Love your work! How about a lesson on scale « switching »
Thank you!
Great suggestion! Can you elaborate a little on what you mean? I have a few different interpretations of what you might be talking about
Dida Pelled, in a short video mentioned you teaching her about »switching ».I don’t quite understand what she was getting at, my guess is that scale switching would be trying to to keep to a limited range and switching scales to support the changes of a tune.
What ever you want to share will be awesome!
Cheers from Seattle!
Ah yes! I know exactly what you are talking about . I will put it on my list for future topics...
look forward to the next lesson!
❤
Great video!
Thanks!
Thank you Dor!
I love this - I am going to dig a bit deeper into your videos. I play contrapunally all the time (too much Bach - although, one can NEVER have too much Bach). What I mis is the boxing and the, perhaps, corney jazz phases and watching you play is helpig me fill a lot of gaps. THANK YOU. (more capital letters than I expected s o r r y).
.. but, one extra thing. Flow: with Bach I find the parts are not stuck in 'parts of the hand'. I like the parts of the hand idea, but someitmes the part passes (up or down) to the fingers that might otherwise have been occupied with their part. Bach does this a lot - and when I get hime right in the playig it feels wonderful. and When I am in the flwo at a jazz gig, it feels equally wondeerful.
Wonderful Tutorial. Thank you so much! I would love to get some lessons from you but I live in Berlin, Germany. Are you teaching via Skype at all?
Thank you. Yes , I teach online. Send me an email to sam@samyahel.com and we can try to set something up. Best, sam
Wish one could develop that on the guitar
I think that’s definitely possible with some modifications. Maybe not 4 voices in that way , but I have had guitar students working on this type of stuff before
I guess this how Brad Mehldau got this sound? Wonder if this kind of thing is what Fred Hersch taught him.
