Do speak every fact that comes to your mind when you think it? If you saw an objectively ugly person, would you walk up to them and say "you're ugly and no one can be upset I said that because it's a fact?" No you wouldn't, unless you're either autistic or a complete douchebag. I think it's a little of both for Hikaru here.
He should be supporting his "friend," not publicly putting him down.

    • @wisnuyudhaw
      @wisnuyudhaw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@John Doe He never said that anyone shouldn't be upset if someone stated a harsh fact/opinion at them, he said it himself that basically if people don't like what he stated then that's that, it doesn't necessarily invalidate what he said and at the same time, how people feel about his statement is still valid
What I take from his talk about Levy not going to be a GM is that with how Levy plays his games against stronger players, he doesn't seem to apply the right mindset of how he should strategize his plays and, as Hikaru said it himself, ends up struggling a lot
But like what Hikaru said a few times in this video, while he said that it's unrealistic, it doesn't mean that it's impossible at all. An objectively ugly person still has a possibility to improve their appearance, just like how there's still a possibility for Levy to be a GM

I really hate contributing to this stupid non-sense of the youtube comment sections but you guys are annoying. First, Hikaru is entitled to his opinion. Second, he didn't say that Levy can't become GM. He said that Levy can't become a grandmaster UNLESS he drops everything he is doing. He clearly believes Levy can do it in some capacity. To me, it sounds like Hikaru is actually a good friend that sees the good things that are going on in Levy's life. And understands that it would be foolish for him to drop everything just to please you guys?

only good friend would spend some of their time watching his friend games to give out advice, like what would he gain from watching Levy games anyway? he don't make vids about it, content on twitch? nope he don't even need it. But he watched it because he believe in Levy and think Levy can improve more. Beside he's not saying something like: "Oh levy is trash, he's dog shit he won't be a GM". All he say is Levy should abandon his ideology of afraid losing and go for a draw, instead he should go all out for the GM titles and start attacking. You can't be GM until you can beat GMs to the pulp. GM is a harsh world, even to GM themselves (I'm looking at you Mishra). So if Levy want to survive there, he need to improve.

Hikaru does have a big ego but he’s right. It's not that Hikaru's wrong - of course he would know better than almost anybody else how realistic it is for Levy to become a GM. And of course he's entitled to his opinion and to say whatever he wants. But it's just unnecessary to make such comments, and then to double down on them on top of that. Of course the chances for Levi are slim - but does that mean Hikaru shouldn't be supportive of him and try to bring him down as much as he can? Hikaru might be a genius on a chessboard, there's no doubt about that, but socially, he's so inept sometimes that it genuinely hurts to listen to. No wonder why so many in the chess world find him unbearable.

Levy can study for a year or two like GMH said or keep streaming and not make GM. His results at recent tournaments has shown he isn't even close and his after action videos prove it. It is what it is, how many high school kids think they will play D1 ball and then go to NBA? If they make it college ball and do above average they might get a spot in Italy and then if they improve a tryout for a scout. Levy has a great backup plan of streaming where the basketball player in Italy will be lucky to come back to the states and sell insurance.

10:35 a fully matured brain means it's fully "pruned". Hence why a lot of mental illness tends to come out around the same time the brain becomes fully matured because it "over-prunes" and simplifies "too much" causing problems. There's many more "connections"/pathways/highways in the brains of young people, but later in life the brain simplifies and prunes itself to be more efficient in the "important" areas. Granted, this is my limited knowledge from youtube lectures (Harvard mostly, but still) so take it with a grain of salt (definitely in layman's terms). This also explains why little kids soak up things like a sponge but lack "mature" thinking/thought process that adults are more familiar/associated with.

Levy is in a difficult position - no pun intended - in that he dropped chess for a very long time, and that time is what would have got him to GM.
If he wants it now, he's going to have to put that time back in, and it's going to come at the expense of content.
Is he happy enough being an IM, but also the biggest chess channel on TH-cam...?

He can offer constructive comments while being for him having success. It's called critical thinking, essential skill for any professional.
Levi just got an analysis of his playing philosophy from one of the world's leading experts on the subject.
Personally think Levi needs to sit down with a sports psychologist and get some skills to cope with stress. There is something off about the way he copes with pressure and I think Hikaru's comments are very fair.
I would also say Hikaru is projecting slightly as he can also be found in similar positions.
Look at Magnus. The guys basically a predator. Highly instinctual personality and very, very competitive. His sense for competition is maxed out and he thrives on it. The stress is an advantage for him. That's the difference.

At some point Levy is gonna face a choice between commiting to being a GM and continuing a nice career out of being a really good (by normal human standards exceptional) player who makes great content.
Levy's hinted that he's at that crossroads just now. If he wants to commit the time to pursuing GM he'd need to sacrifice the well spent time he spends streaming and making content.
If you don't think he can make GM, you're potentially doing him a favour by being honest about that. Equally, if Levy is financially secure and is happy to forego the money he can make streaming to pursue the dream of being a GM, good luck to him.
