Troubleshooting High Nitrates, Phosphates & Pale Corals In The 300 Gallon Reef

- In this video, i go through the troubleshooting process of finding the source of excess nitrates and phosphates in my 300-gallon reef tank. I test nitrates and phosphates on a weekly basis using Hanna checkers. A few days ago i noticed my levels had doubled. Along with that i noticed my Alkalinity consumption slowed and the corals turned pale all indicating something is definitely wrong with my reef tank.
I started looking at detritus build-up within the main display along with the 50-gallon lowboys and sump. Nothing looked out of the ordinary even with missing a couple water changes. I decided to stop feeding as much b/c i just made a new batch of food and figured it was from the unthawed shrimp. After a few days passed the nutrients continued to rise so i started to dig within the refugium and discovered one of my large Mexican turbo snails had died and started to rot. After removing the snail i performed my first 30-gallon water change using this opportunity to remove detritus from the main display, sump and refugium. I will be doing another 30-gallon water change within 48 hours to remove the rest of the detritus from the lowboys and refugium. This 60-gallons worth of water should help bring the nutrients down along with removing toxins from the dead snail.

Dang thats crazy, had to be a huge snail for the system not to handle it. But baseball size sounds crazy 😂 glad you figured it out in time
Super helpful video! 👍
Yeah thats the only thing putting them in a refugium. Nothing else can eat it when it dies. Good you found in time
Man that is an insane system its crazy how far you ca take the hobby.....
Thank you
Hate to see this. It's always just a matter of time with so much going on in our reef tanks. I would switch to salifert dkh test kits. The hannah ones give bad readings in only a few months and with a trident on hand that can come and go pretty quick. Good luck bro.
Thank you
Thats a giant snail !!!!
Great 👍 Information that you've Provided as I Venture into the Hobby Coming from Fresh Water Would you suggest that I have a Clear understanding on the Water Peramiders of the Hobby first ? Then the Corals 🪸 :) Great 👍 Content and do you have a Begginers Salt Water Video ? Thanks
Yes i would spend a few weeks just watching videos and taking in the info. I have a ton of beginner vids in the beginners guide to saltwater aquariums playlist
Great information!! 👏👏
Thank you
Just had a similar issue with my 180. My phosphates hit .77. My refugium crashed for whatever reason? I ended up switching to zeovite system. Always wanted to try it and this was my excuse to. My phosphates are now hovering around 0.09 which is lower than the 0.15 it used to run.
I run zeovit system thanks to SonnyX putting his approved stamp on it, and it’s been incredible.
@@stevolam182 I'm doing the same because of his results.
Start up cost is a little crazy but it's a great system
@@jjmccloud I think the worst part was the reactor. I bought the aquamaxx one it was half the price of the KZ one.
at such large systems its often not option just do a water change. that's why I dont mess with larger aquariums
Did it affect the coral in the low boys since its all on the same sump?
Not really more so main display with high PAR
Does Trochus snails smell just ss bad when they die?
How dare you be insentive to other cultures...escargot is delicacy in some areas of the world....they all stink when they...question is why are they dying off
Yes they stink 😂😂
All dead snail smell bad
Did your skimmer not go crazy
Nope worked as normal
When those snails die they smell worse then garbage truck juice lol
Only thing worse than dead snails is dead clam. Those are PUTRID!
What's with the creepy face in the background?😅😅
My giant head duh
Lol
Jason.
Hey man ive had my tank running for 2 weks now with 2 baby clown fish and a bottle of fritz turbo start 900. I am showing 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite but i have 20 nitrates. What should i do next ? Im starting to grow some brown stuff on the sandbed. Thank you.
Water change. Your tank is still cycling. Leave your lights off or at a low setting.
Start your biweekly 10% -20% water changes
@@FishOfHex ok i will do that today. Is it ok if i siphon the sandbed to get the brkwn stuff off and also the food pellets that fell to the bottom ?
