Many years ago I visited that area in eastern, CO. My step dad was born about 10 miles SE of Fleming (half way to Wray) and still had lots of family in that area. Relatives took us to the top of a grain elevator around there and it may have been the one in Fleming. All you could see from the grain elevator was flat farm land and the next town.

Oh my gosh Ausia, that creepy town and getting stuck in the mud will give you nightmares for a while! So thankful Jon was still with you and you weren't by yourself dealing with it...Look at it from the bright side and be thankful it didn't happen on the side of the road with lots of traffic.....So happy everything turned out fine...Take care of you and Jon and the puppies....Whew what a night!!!

Mud, glorious mud! Following your intuitions and being wrong is (almost) always easier than explaining to yourself why you didn't. The trouble with a winch is you need something to tie it to and it must be maintained so the line doesn't snap and kill somebody...cheaper to just listen to yourself Ausia, 'cause, (except for following Chuck on hikes), you are incredibly intuitive. A winch is good to have we have one on our truck and one on the 4 wheeler. Rick was a tow truck driver when we meet in Houston. Glad you had a good tow truck driver that was able to get you out. However I think sometimes stuff like this happens to keep us out of harms way down the road.
Glad you finally got out of that mess! What a creepy little town! We got stuck in a campground a few years ago in our Class C. Our gut also told us the spot the campground owner put us in was not good but we didn't listen and we got stuck. Luckily our neighbor was able to pull us out with his dually but what a mess! So yes always listen to that inner voice of reason! We also always have roadside. Yes it sucks waiting hours for someone to show up but it saves a lot of money. Safe travels.

I was raised in a small town in Kansas similar to Fleming. When it started raining, you could have parked on any paved street in town and nobody would have given you a hard time. In fact, if you would have asked anyone in town for help, they would have come out in the rain to help you. All it takes is being nice and asking for help.

I'll bet if you'd of called one of those numbers at the museum, & ask them if they knew any farmer that had a tractor that could pull you out. Small town people are usually very helpful & would of been thankful for the extra $! You had John with you so they probably wouldn't of tried anything. I've read some of the comments with all the should of & could of suggestions, Ausia just ignore it, they don't realize your not a newbie & everyone does things they say oops shouldn't of done that. Make sure you are on solid ground. Eric would agree! Eric did say he got a winch after he got stuck. Somehow its able to mount on either the front or the rear.
What an ordeal! I definitely learned from your experience and will be extra careful and aware of where I park as I travel this summer. I'm currently in Minnesota and headed into Michigan in a day or two, then south. All new territory for me.

It's just a part of life & not even that bad. Now y'all have a fun story to tell. In our pasture we got a a tractor stuck, then the 4x4 truck got stuck, then the ignition in my 4x4 Blazer messed up so we couldn't use it to get anyone unstuck. So we had to call the wrecker out. Guess what?! The wrecker got stuck. It rained all day on us. The neighbors sat on their back porch laughing at us, and I don't blame them. So we had to call another wrecker to get the fist wrecker unstuck & that's when the police had to get involved. My neighbors decided we couldn't winch onto a huge diameter steel post in the ground between our houses, which was actually on our property. A fight ensued between them & us. The cops showed up, they got arrested, we hooked onto the steel post & approximately 10 hours later we were all unstuck. It sucked that day, but it's a great story now.
You need those tracks that a lot of van life users have but they work great for mud snow or whatever? Sand? Recovery tracks or something? You should have 2sets. Take Care and Stay Safe.

Our town had a thing like the jail that was only used at festival times, you could pay some money and have a friend or family member arrested and put in jail for a half hour or so , depending how much you paid. Sad to see towns so vacant , you have to wonder where all the people went. 🥺
