In this episode we explore the historical cruise ship MV Astoria, which was the oldest deepwater sailing cruise ship before the pandemic. Since 2020 The Astoria is docked and its future uncertain.
The construction of this ship started in 1944 and commenced service in 1948 as the transatlantic ocean liner Stockholm. She was best known for an accidental collision with the ship Andrea Doria in July 1956, resulting in the sinking of the latter ship and 46 fatalities off the coast in Massachusetts, United States. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under several names.

Security saw you enter and were going to wait for you to leave but when you didn't come out before their shift ended they decided to go look for you. Lucky they missed you.
This was incredibly fascinating to see. Great video guys and thanks for documenting an iconic ship that will (probably) get scrapped.
Why did I know I would find you in these comments lol?
I agree, it’s very interesting to see how this ship is still around after 75 years even if it is pretty much abandoned
You've only recently hopped into the cruise ship hype. After you ranked a carnival ship higher than a Virgin ship, you lost credibility lol 🤣 everything else you do is incredible tho
Lol I had a feeling I would find you here, it really is an iconic ship.
@BrightSunFilms Thanks a lot ! This one took a lot of persistence and effort :)
The MV Astoria is the longest running Ocean Liner in history btw. Since 1948 she's sailed the seven seas. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Stockholm, Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016. It's good to see her again and in quite good shape. Thanks again Bob! Such a fun look inside a pretty historical ship with a checkered past. Also not to be confused with the tragic demise of the vessel MS Estonia in 1994. Another very interesting maritime incident.
Thanks for checking and the additional info 🙏 next week an aircraft carrier.
@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath anytime my friend. I knew this ship the second I saw it from my childhood. Very cool. Cannot wait for next week as always but especially with a CVN type/style vessels! Just love a good Naval ship or Submarine or Cruise Liner or Research Vessel. Interesting and unique setup for each and within their own Builders and Shipyards even more unique touches depending on the manufacturer. Fun stuff. You definitely find the best of the best man! 🤘
MV Doulos was a longer sailing Ocean Liner. She sailed from 1914 to 2009.
@@shini1478 not currently in service so not eligible. Has to be a ship currently in service. This ship is still currently registered.
@@WthaHatchet Yes, but you said in history 😉 Should be the longest “currently registered” cruise ship.
Hi guys
Thank you for amazing video.
I get cry.
I used to work on this ship with my wife in 1997 but was name "Italia Prima" as waiter in restaurant.
Im still remember galley for crew and passenger.
Our beautiful restaurant,it's nothing changes from 1997
Also in crew mess I had incident with some crew members.
Crew bar aft of the ship was number 1 place where all crew must go after long day job.
Thank you
We was young on this time.
I can't believe In still remember.
Thank you
This is probably my record for pausing during your videos so I could take in everything in the rooms. As always, Bob, amazing job!
Thanks for checking out ! Next week the record might be broken again ! :) An abandoned aircraft carrier.
That was great. I was on the Stockholm when it crashed with the Andrea Doria - age 3. I have been wishing the Astoria would return to service but I'm not so optimistic. Very interesting to see this!
Thank you for this unique experience. I would like to add that this ship is a great example of the incredible craftsmanship and quality of Swedish engineering. The ship was ordered in 1944, and launched on 9 September 1946, as Stockholm was built by the famous Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). It is worth knowing that during the 1930s the Swedish Götaverken was the world's biggest shipyard by launched gross registered tonnage. It was founded in 1841 and went bankrupt in 1989.
So the Astoria (Original name Stockholm) is not only important to the world as the oldest sailing cruise ship in the world it is also very important as it's the last ship still sailing hailing from the famous SAL line, Swedish American Line. So this ship is an important part of Swedish history. Sadly there aren't a lot of TH-camrs covering the SAL ships and their colorful history, perhaps this fantastic video could also contribute to this cause.
I would also like to add that the original SAL paint scheme was incredibly beautiful and would look great today as well. At some point after the delivery of the , SAL decided to abandon the traditional black hull colour and their entire fleet was repainted with white hulls
Sailed on her as Athena (2012) and Astoria (2018). She was small, but a good ship. On the second cruise, we actually docked in Rotterdam.
She is in good enough shape it seems, but you can see mold appearing and a slow breakdown of the exterior, so any saving of it should be soon! Great explore!
You are always so respectful when you explore anything, Idk why they wouldn't just allow you access to bring attention and maybe much needed funds to a place or thing. Thank you for taking us with you. Poor ship :(
It's an insurance liability to have anyone not employed by the company on board. I totally understand why they said no. Still glad they were able to get on the ship.
Man this amazing. Thank you for all the risks you took so we can see. Glad we can see the ship, people need to see it. I have the highest respect for you guys. Gotta keep these things/places from fading away and becoming a distant memory.
Thanks man!😎 Glad we managed. Next week you see me going on a crazy solo mission to an abandoned aircraft carrier😅
Amazing video. This ship had a long career, sailed on the Atlantic ocean alongside great ships like the RMS Queen Marry and others.
incredibly amount stuff on board you never realise how self sufficient ships have to be i could almost smell the oil and grease in the spare parts and repair shops
Most museum ships have those spaces open to the public. I highly recommend visiting one if you ever get the chance.
Many thanks. Never dreamed I would see inside the liner that sent the Andria Doria to the bottom. I'm a ship geek.
I worked on this ship when it was Azores. Beautiful ship. Thanks for the memories!!
19:11 my office was next door to the shop
Ooo amazing! Must be so sad to see….
At 75 years old and being in cold lay-up, what it would take to restore this ship as well as bring it up to code for passenger use is not probable. When a ship is in cold lay-up with no maintenance, the equipment will continue to corrode (note the water damage and rust) which is why it probably hasn't been able to sell. Just like an old car, you can continue to pump money into it yet things will still continue to break down. As a cruise enthusiast (14 cruises and counting) , I found this video to be very interesting and appreciate the work you did to get onboard and explore a ship that thrilled hundreds of thousands of passengers over her time!
Technically everything below the waterline is 75 years old, everything else is from when they rebuilt her in 1994/1995
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic!
We spent the last night on her in Poole 12/13 March 2020 (think about that date)! The last day she had passengers on! Gutted we didn’t get to Iceland and other ports of call on our cruise.
Brilliant work you guys 👍
The MV Astoria is an amazing fascinating ship with a slightly infamous history. I hope that she is able to get a new lease on life in the future, she deserves to be saved
Sadly it has been confirmed that she is headed for the scrappers torch
No, not yet, but it is unfortunately likely@@johnrottler4000
While it is sad to be scrapped honestly at her age and utility it's not worth keeping her in service, it's too dangerous. Also few want to pay to keep her up as a floating museum.. i.e. even the SS United States isn't doing well in that state. Better to have a video like this to remember her by and she can either rest as an artificial reef, or help to build new buildings
@@johnrottler4000 Those rumors were false. She is in limbo but the owners want her saved.
Working in the ports of Stockholm, it’s always a delight whenever Astoria - ex Stockholm - comes to visit.
I’d love to see her return to service, but given the state of her it may well be prohibitively expensive.
It amazes me how much stuff there are on these ships. Thanks for the explore!
This was a real treat! Whilst I've been on several cruise ships, I've never seen the galley, crew quarters, engine room, etc. Really something to see!
Superb strong hull: no scrap this unique historical vessel.
amazing video you guys keep up the great work :)
thank you for documenting this, it's incredible and very eye opening. I think she would make a great candidate for a museum ship documenting Ocean liner history of the 2nd half of the 20th century
Brilliant guys! The music matches the images perfectly also.
Amazing how much machinery and parts are needed.
Yes, it’s a floating village😱
You never stop delivering, thanks Bob!
Thanks for spending so much time in the machinery spaces!
I am never sick, but got sick on this ship while filming on the lower decks.. So couldn’t film as much as I wanted😂
Wonderful and very interesting tour of an historic ship which came into being the same time I did. It's staggering to think of the distance she has traveled and the untold thousands that have traveled and worked on her...Thanks so much for the experience.
Amazing work, Bob as always
Fascinating tour... wonderful! Thank you for respecting the space and not disturbing it. Well done!
Thanks a million! Tomorrow I post a solo adventure to an abandoned aircraft carrier☺️
Full tour is right! Thanks Bob!
Loved seeing the mechanical and engineering spaces. Those are the behind the scene areas passengers never get to see.
Wow, Bob!! I just love seeing these vintage ocean liners🚢 Thanks for sharing this! Wishing you a wonderful holiday season💜😻
You're an absolute legend for persevering and exploring this historical ship! Well done.
Thanks mate 😊😊
I just watched a vlog video where this ship was cruising. The tour when it was fully operational vs now is so sad. Crazy to think how a few years ago these rooms were being used and now they’re rotting and molding away. RIP Astoria.
Was nice to see the ship operational with stocked store shelves. Trusting that Sweden will find a place for her.
Looks like it was pretty well maintained, hopefully doesn’t get scrapped.
Amazing vídeo!!! I love this old ships because they have soul.
Can't see this ship being updated/restored to financial viability. Amazing how long of an active life it had. Not to mention its notorious past with the collision. Great video!
Never been on this ship but seen her many times over the years. Its really small and sleek compared to modern cruise ships.
Thank you for visiting such an iconic ship and recording as much as you could. It was fascinating as to how many items were left behind and astonishing items such as apparent clean white shirts left hanging. It felt like a time museum being allowed to peek into such an old vessel!
Thanks for checking John!
Great video. Thank you for sharing it
That was an excellent video Bob. Keep up the good work, really enjoyed it, thank you.
Awesome episode! Great work guys!!
I would call this a thrill ride. Thank you for taking us along, stay safe.
She will always be the Stockholm to me. Great vid and ty for the tour
Thanx Bob !!!Good work !
Love all your videos. Really fascinating to watch.
Y’all are wild! I appreciate the risks y’all take. These videos are amazing!
love watching you guys explore!
Thanks! Next week a solo mission to an old aircraft carrier😌
Well done and thank you for sharing this. It's sad to think so much could possibly go to scrap.
Another fantastic video bob ❤
Another great one, well done, Bob!
Awesome video Bob! Thank you for sharing all of your amazing video's! You are the hardest working guy on TH-cam!!
Yes! Always try to explore cool and unexplored missions.😎
What a wonderful tour of this ship. I’m glad you guys didn’t get caught.
Trabalho incrível que vocês trazem para o canal, sou brasileiro e não perco um vídeo
Truly awesome! Thank you!!!
Another awesome find!
incredible thank you for risking the biscuit for this. crazy to think just a few years ago she was filled with people
amazing job done ty
Bob . You and Maureno, Remon, Lesley and his brother are my favourite urban explorers. I love that mainly only you do ships 🛳️
Awesome video. I’ve read some of the story of the vessel and it was cool to see a piece of history. Sailed under several different names as a transatlantic liner then cruise ship and I believe now still sits idle til they either find a buyer or scrap her. But that’s all in the description and the other comments. I’ve greatly enjoyed all your exploration videos so far, it’s nice to live vicariously through you a little and to be able to see some old forgotten historical places of the world.
Bravo 👏 great explore and video!
brilliant explore interesting to see the hidden from paying passengers bit, see where the work takes place
great job documenting this small treasure of a ship. i fear like many other she will end up on a beach in turkey or india despite her historical significance.
As usual great video my dear friend. You are the best at this .... !!!!
Wow! She’s such a beautiful ship ❤
Love the emphasis on the mold 👍
Super gave video jongens, vooral de machine ruimte en deze is erg spannend ❤❤
Super interesting and lots to look at. Thanks!
Thanks! Tomorrow I post an aircraft carrier😁
Should be kept as a museum
fantastic job...stay on !!
Wow! This is incredible
Nice one bob cant wait for the carrier ship
Nice bro, old ships are always cool
Iconic video
Straight too favourable
My parents and my brother were on that ship when it collided with the Andrea Adoria
I have so far watched 4 of your videos. Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE your content!! I'm a huge fan of @Brightsunfilms, but I have officially watched everything. So I wanted to find a channel with good storytelling- as well as fantastic content/adventure. Sir, you got all of that! 👍❤
Thanks! There are some really amazing adventures on this channel. (I don’t know what kind of places you like?) I always try to go to places which haven’t been explored by anyone😄
Thank you for this fascinating Video.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Great video , Had chance to work on this vessel in 2019
Another great video bob an amazing ship hopefully she will be up and running again, i really love your adventures. 📸
Thanks! Tomorrow I post an aircraft carrier😁🤩
Was all quiet until the end, "we finished" perfect timing and great exploring 😏👍
Thanks for showing us this peice of history. Beautiful old ship. Hopefully they save her.
And Funchual
I really hope this ship can be saved
And doing what?
@@dandrakenholt5455the same queens mary
I hope she gets scrapped because shes in such an ugly 90s shape and state wich cant be reversed into the beautifull liner she once was.
The ship cannot be saved. She's already full with mold and rust.
@Maryn78 nah the mold can be easily fixed. And the rust is superficial
Great video as always thank you. Dreaded carpet moths at 37:48 - very difficult to get rid of. And there's some washing machines from 40:45 that say "D&V" on - presumably for only washing the things contaminated after Diarrhoea and Vomiting - a nasty problem on cruise ships.
Thank you for this experience. Seeing what a laid up ship is like is pretty eye opening. Even fixing all that mold and the bug infestation would cost a fortune. Shame to see what became of her, but at this point I wonder if sentimental value alone can really help this ship.
It is interesting to me how most things like shops and such have been emptied out, but you can still see some small private items of crew here and there. Like they had just left a bit ago.
Pity someone couldn't have saved the port visit plaques
I am so glad to have found this channel ! After the aircraft carrier I was hooked ! Now I have a bunch of your videos to get caught up on! Keep up the amazing work!
It says online it’s been sold to be scrapped
THANK YOU! VERY NICE TRIP!)
Great vid lads.
Thanks ! Tomorrow I post an aircraft carrier 😎
Mooie video! Gelukkig hebben jullie veel op beeld vastgelegt, het ziet er somber uit voor dit schip. Hopelijk krijgt het nog een bestemming ipv de sloop.
Great stuff
Awesome ship!
Great video. I'm glad I stumbled on your channel.
Thanks ! You can find some cool missions to space shuttles, warships, submarines, military facilities and more on this channel :)
Stockholm! the ship that sunk the liner Andrea Doria!
Been looking through the comments to look if anyone knew this, she's quite an historical vessel, would like to see her looked after but I doubt it😢.
very Great video and so nice ship
It's crazy how fast things decay! Most of the ship was in fairly good condition, but in some areas, mold was setting in and paint was peeling off and it hasn't even been 4 years!
Yes.. Luckily it was only in a few parts😌 Thanks for checking
What happens when they don't run AC or a dehumidifier
@@gregsbiplays9899It looks like water is getting inside which is causing the mould and other damage.
@@PhysicsAirline What happens when they don't run AC or a dehumidifier
Brilliant 😊
Thanks: interesting how it was completely different than what I expected. It’s clear she suffered through a very bad “modernization” in the 1980s and now resembles an abandoned shopping mall. It’s good you have documented its current state.
Bob i love youer cruise ship inside historical cruise ship video keep makeing them
i wish i could go with you on some of thous ship
What a treat I've been intrested in the faith of the MS Astoria (former Stockholm), its interior look in good condition despite being laid up for nearly three years! Its a good record of the ships interior before her likely faith of heading to Turkey or India for disposal.
