  • Mike Shadday's spinal stroke is rare and it's even rarer in someone in their 20s. With only a little movement in the toes and ankle of one foot, Mike didn't know if he would ever walk again. He has made tremendous progress through his rehab as an inpatient at Gaylord. Mike attributes much of his recovery to a lot of hard work infused with the support of his girlfriend, Haley, his family, and his team of nurses and therapy staff at Gaylord. Mike, and Haley, who is an occupational therapist, carefully researched where he should go for his rehab. As a result of extensive physical, occupational and aquatic therapy, Mike was able to walk out of Gaylord with a walker.

Our 13 year old son also had a spinal cord stroke T2-T12 in 2022 and is now walking and starting to play sport again. He has worked super hard and continues to do so. All the best with your ongoing Rehab !!! Aim high, don't be defined by what anyone tells you. Make your own rules !!! Push all boundaries !

I had a spinal cord stroke too when I was in your son's age, that was 30 years ago. I'm still in a wheelchair, I never regained the lost functions. However, I never lost hope in all those years and I'm determined to walk again.. Please, can you tell me what helped your son walk again? Was it "just" physical therapy or did he take special medication or anything else to help with the nerve damage? Did the damaged nerves recover? I would be really grateful if you could give me a short answer. Sending blessings from Austria. Your posting gave me a lot of hope, your son is starting to play sport again, that's just incredible.. All the best for you.

@@karin5159 We went into the hyperbaric chamber very early on after his injury ( 30 hours post injury) and after about 4 days started to develop tiny movements in one toe. It continued from there. th-cam.com/video/uBbEeBdUTKw/w-d-xo.html .Here is a link to his story. He continues to do formalized Exersice Physiology sessions 3 days a week, as well as either some type of modified sports training/gym sessions or run training each week. At 7 months on we are still seeing foreward gains in mobility/dynamic movements etc. from being a high level athlete prior to the injury, we have a ways to go, however the wheel chair is a long way behind him. All the best, keep at it. Don't stop dreaming and keep rehabing !!!!

Over 30 years ago I had four months of intensive physical therapy at Gaylord after a TBI in late 1981; I absolutely hated the hospital, the people, and the therapy-but I was mad as hell! (Any brain event makes you mad as hell!) It got me walking again, and I was able to return to college in 1983 and complete my bachelor's degree.
A high-profile neighbor of mine is currently receiving similar therapy to yours-for a spinal stroke he had in May-at NYU Langone, and I'm hoping he's able to walk again. He believes he will, and has a lot of people rooting for him. I write to him about twice a week, and am going to share Mike's story. (I also walked out of Gaylord with a walker but am now ambulatory.)

Hello dawn I suffered a spinal stroke four months ago. Do you have any advice or progress goals that you may be willing to share? I’m 28 I lost function of everything below the hips when it happened and could only wiggle my left toe. Now four months later I can stand with a walker and I’ve got one leg to lock. Any advice you can give would be gladly appreciated .

@@fstbll14 nice to meet you. Yes make sure you stick w physical therapy and don’t stop. I can now walk w canes when I was told I would never walk again. I started the same way as you. Trying to stand w the walker and eventually taking steps. It took me about a year to really start walking w a walker. I started driving my car again and have no modifications to it since my right leg is now pretty strong. So keep moving cuz the more you do the more your body will follow.

@@dawnmarie9369 thank you Dawn I really appreciate it this has been hell for me and no one knows anything when you ask so it’s nice to hear that there is hope from someone who experienced it . I push myself to stand and move for about three hours a day but I’ll go behind that thank you!
