    Nice review! Questions? I’m making about 16 oz of fenugreek leave in conditioner using Germall Plus. Do I use 0.5% in my mix and do 0.5% equal to one tablespoon?

    • @greenbeautychemist.

      Don't use preservative for non cosmetic ingredient products. This is best done as a DIY. There is more to preserving product than adding preservative. Liquid Germall plus is 0.5% while your other ingredients should be 99.5%. All the best

    1. What percentage of sodium benzoate should I used to preserve my coconut shampoo and deep conditioner?
    2. Should I dissolve the sodium benzoate in water before using it?
    3. What should be the pH of the final product?
    4. What will be the shelf life of the product.

    • @greenbeautychemist.
      @greenbeautychemist.  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is your duty to ask the supplier of your preservative how to use it.
      I don't use sodium Benzoate because it is not a broad spectrum preservative.
      I can't tell you the final pH and the shelf life. That is up to you to determine.

    What is the best preservative when making liquid products. Example: Hydrating hair mist?

    • @greenbeautychemist.

      Go with Liquid Germall Plus at 0.5%. If making natural, use Geogard ECT aka Preservative Eco at 1%. Keep your hair mist in an ambered colored bottle or Miron Violet Jar to prevent degradation of the actives in your product.

    Yes thank you for this video, I do have a question: why don't we use sodium benzoate as presevative as it is seemingly use in food as presevative and many haircare products are ingredients from the kitchen at least by the diy homecrafter ?

    • @greenbeautychemist.
      @greenbeautychemist.  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't use it because it works well with acidic formulations.
      Sodium benzoate is most effective in formulations with a pH below 5. As the pH increases above 5, its antimicrobial effectiveness decreases. This pH-dependency is more critical in cosmetics than in many foods, as many cosmetic products have a pH above 5.

      It won't store for a long time because you didn't use cosmetic grade ingredients. Onion Garlic,et will soon start degrading it. You can try using a preservative to see if it is not deactivated by the actives in your natural ingredients.

    Hello 😊
    I came across your video regarding preservatives and i have been going back and forth as to whether or not to add a preservative in my naturally made salt, sugar scrubs. Typically I have not been adding them in since I would like to stay in the "natural" field, however, i do know that adding a preservative in would give it a little more shelf life. I guess my only concern/worry is when it comes to making sells, ex: making to order or making to stock, of course the moment you make a scrub its shelf life begins to lessen and that doesn't give the potential buyer much time to use considering theres no preservative to give them more time to have. Please help 🙏🏽 any advice is greatly appreciated. Most of my scrubs are with salt, however, i do make some with a salt/Sugar blend.

    What advice would you give to one wanting to use "Powdered Germall Plus" in the formulation of their lotions or other hydros products or even salt scrubs and other products that may come in contact with water?
    How does one use powdered Germall plus in their formulation?
    Is it added directly to the mix or is it to be diluted before being integrated?

    Hello!
    I am so grateful for your informative video! However before I take things into my own hands. I’d like to ask your advise on using safe preservatives for 2 products I’m looking into making and selling.
    1.) an all natural essential oil, herbs, & carrier oil hair growth serum ( no water in this recipe)
    2.) An all natural detangling spray using marshmallow root, apple cider vinegar, some carrier oils and essential oils and water. I do know that I definitely need a preservative when mixing oil and water, especially if I want to sell and have a long shelf life. These would be to sell, not just for person use. I just want to make sure that everything is 100% safe and natural before I make and sell.

There’s no way to preserve natural ingredients? a lot of brand hair products I use have such ingredients and confused how they are able to preserve the product because I want to start making hair products but need a preserve them not having to put them in the fridge like you say to do in the comments.

    • @greenbeautychemist.

      The in store brands use cosmetic grade Aloe Vera powder. They are processed in a way to prevent growth of bacteria, yeast and mold. If you use raw aloe vera that is not processed professionally, it will grow mold no matter the amount of preservative you used. You can go ahead and use any of these preservative in a non cosmetic ingredient but don't be surprised when mold, yeast and bacteria grow on top of it. For your own safety, do not do this. As a trained cosmetic chemist with cosmetic science background, I know how deadly YMB (Yeast, Mold and Bacteria) can be if you use product with them. Please protect yourself. If you want to start preserving yourself, go ahead and learn cosmetic formulation, you will learn how to properly and safely make and preserve beauty products with cosmetic grade ingredients and not raw ingredients you make at home. That is the best way to go. All the best.

    • @greenbeautychemist.
      @greenbeautychemist.  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Make sure your preservative is fresh. Most suppliers sell expired preservative.
      Back to your question, yes your preservative may become weak after it has passed the expiration date.
      The tips is ensure your preservative is still active when you are making your product, it will help to preserve your product while it is still active. Liquid Germall Plus can preserve your product up till 9 to 12 months. All the best
      A recommended preservative is Euxyl PE 9010 - pureblendnaturals.com/products/euxyl-pe-9010-preservative-canada

      No preservative can help preserve fresh banana, fresh aloe vera juice. When you are making DIY products with raw ingredients like this, it will deactivate the preservative, grow mold and put you at risk.
      If you want your preservative to work, please consider using cosmetic grade ingredient. I have said this so many times and I will continue to say it for the safety of everyone. If you want to make DIY, make enough to use for one time. If your plan is to make your own products, learn cosmetic formulation so as to know the effective ways to make them with cosmetic grade ingredients and preservative.

    Great video thanks for the information. Creating a natural skin care line and having trouble choosing preservatives. What would you say is the best preservative for emulsified sugar scrubs, and aloe Vera gel that contain oil & water? Can I call my products natural if they contain even small amounts of preservatives that have synthetic ingredients?

    • @greenbeautychemist.
      @greenbeautychemist.  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sugar is a very common mold magnet, when formulating such, you will need strong synthetic preservative with Paraben to keep mold away. Even regular synthetic preservative can't keep mold away from sugar scrubs.
      Since you will be using heavily synthetic preservative in your product, you can't claim it is natural. Try Phenoxyethanol SA (INCI NAME: phenoxyethanol, sorbic acid, caprylyl glycol) - Trade name is Optiphen Plus (It is a synthetic preservative with no paraben)

      You don't need any preservative for oil infusion. Just ensure there is no water in the fenugreek and rosemary and keep the container clean.
      We do not use preservative for oil infusion.
      After you are done with the infusion, you can add Natural Vitamin E to prevent your oil from going rancid, microbes need water, air and excessive light to attack your product and their activities is reduced to minimum without water so that is why we don't preserve infused oil. • @greenbeautychemist.

      No natural preservative can preserve sugar scrubs. Sugar is a natural mold magnet, you need strong synthetic preservative with paraben to protect it. We don't support that at NaturalSkincareSchool

    I found your video in hopes to find an answer to extending the shelf life of cucumber face cream. Product consisting of Cucs, Aloe and coconut oil. Would adding a preservative like Geogard ECT be ideal? Or does this type of cream need to stay refrigerated ? Google says that. In the refrigerator without ECT would last 3 months. What would ECT help me in achieving if anything at all? I’m very confused by the amounts and portions according to the products used along with the ECT.
    Thank you in advance.

      if you follow good manufacturing practices, any broad spectrum preservative will help extend the shelf life of your product. GEOGARD ECT is a preservative that can work well if you follow GMP procedure. Take care

    Hi. Thank you for this very awesome and informative video. Is there a preservative that is all inclusive? I am making sugar scrubs, salt scrubs, body butters, face masks and hair oils. Is there a preservative that can be used successfully across the board without needing multiple?

    • @greenbeautychemist.
      @greenbeautychemist.  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are called broad spectrum preservative but for sugar scrubs, I don't recommend any natural preservative. All the preservatives in this video are broad spectrum but not for sugar scrubs. Sugar is a natural mold magnet.

      Yes it is. As long as your ingredients are free of contamination. Use it at 0.5%

      I don't recommend u make any beauty product without a measuring device. Get yourself a weighing scale b4 you start. Tablespoons or teaspoon is totally inaccurate. U will end up with wrong products. Aliexpress or Amazon is your best bet for getting a scale. Take care
