  • Tonight we're creating a very simple scenic base, the kind that just serves as a "decorated display stand" for our model. No storytelling, no real context, just a piece of groundwork for those situations when you don't want to put your model on a plain wooden base or on your shelf.
    And I'm going to learn quite a few things in the process, which I'll try to implement in the next piece of terrain!

    So this experience led me to purchasing the FAQ Dioramas book from AK, because I felt like I'm overcomplicating even the most basic things which in turn kept distracting me from important stuff like composition etc.
    Well, after reading a few chapters I can say pretty much everything can be done in a more straightforward way, so I hope the next vignette will look much better!

      @petermarrocco7840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s technically pattern-welded steel, not Damascus steel. I’m not going to tell you to call it pattern-welded because i understand that it makes it seem way cooler if you call it Damascus steel, but there is a big difference between real Damascus steel which they can no longer make and pattern-welded steel which is just forge-welding a billet of different steels to give you a certain look. The bands in Damascus steel consist of carbon nanotubes and cemenite nanowires which are part of it not the reason why Damascus steel was so strong. Conversely the bands in pattern-welded steel are purely cosmetic. At the end of the day idc what you call it as long as you know what the difference is :)

    People always come back with "i can't do this!!" But you can. Everyone was new to the hobby at one time. Patience, practice, and layers. Martin's way of weathering has reinforced how i do things. And also made me do other things i didn't think about. You young guys just getting started, don't be overwhelmed and don't think you cant do these things. All these great modelers have certain things in common, wanting to get better, patience and layers, using references, and not afraid to make mistakes. Only way to get better is to get out there and start building and painting and weathering.

    What I used to do with grass before I got a good static grass applicator was using a vacuum cleaner to make the static grass stand upright more. The first applicator I has didn't have enough strength to make the fibres stand up well enough but the vacuum cleaner worked quite well..as long as you don't get it to close.

    Here’s a technique I’ve learned from another modern TH-cam you might have heard of called Andy’s Hobby Headquarters. Anyway the technique is: have a space pair of rubber tracks so you can press it down into the mold (and I believe you let it dry with the tracks in there) and than your peel the rubber tracks off and it leaves a really nice track impression

    Texturing the styrene before cutting is a lot more easier. And with razor saw or metal brush, a final pass with Scotch brite will remove most bits which didn't come off.
    Static grass applicator is a must. Woodland Scenics has the heavy duty Static King, but also a cheap plastic can, which seems to work for small project. The transformer fly swatter are also good for small grass. I use up to 12 mm grass, and for that the Static King is a lot more successful.

    Suggestion for incorporating figures in future builds: Typically, due to the poor visibility outside the vehicle, crews of WWII tanks would have their hatches open and their heads sticking out until they were actually getting shot at or bombarded with artillery. (commander and driver)
    For when you do your first figure on this channel like you mentioned, it would be awesome to do the tank crew unbuttoned and operating the vehicle, particularly for a WWII tank.

    • @NightShiftScaleModels
      @NightShiftScaleModels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's something I'd definitely do. A partial figure isn't so time consuming so it would be a good starting point. Part of me wanted to paint the tank commander included in this kit, but unfortunately there was no hatch detail from the inside so I just kept the tank closed.

    I must have missed the needless parts of the video 🤣 it didn't seem long when I watched it. Looking forward to the fine leaf litter a coffee grinder produces. Hopefully it turns out less coarse than the trusty old food processor. It's always cool to see the behind the scenes steps and not just the finished product, to know that everyone makes something they see as filled with mistakes and to learn lessons with them along the way. It seems to me like you have all the construction techniques down! Now if you want to work on anything, it is perhaps more the conceptual or aesthetic aspects. I understand what you're saying about the fences blocking the view. The whole scene could certainly be described as realistic, but I see what you mean about the model looking cramped and needing room to breathe. When it comes to my personal taste in things like fences or telephone wires, I prefer something that doesn't show up in a ground level photo looking cropped sooner than it should if that makes any sense. Like seeing the full tank, but only half of the fence in the foreground. I understand completely why it is the way it is and the fence cannot extend beyond the base. But just something that pops up for me as interrupting the "suspension of disbelief". Unfortunate that often "realistic" and "artistically pleasing" do not line up perfectly. Anyway, very much looking forward to your workbench tour! Have a great week 😁

    for your grass fiber, you can put down a base of watered down PVA glue then take a piece of PVC pipe, rub the pipe with cloth to generate a static charge. as you sprinkle down the fiber bring the pipe close and it will encourage the fibers to stand and align. wont be perfect and you can buy/make better tools to do this. but its an easy test to see if it works for you

    First, I think you are a bit hard on yourself for the final result. You were trying to do a simple base for a model and I think the end result was effective.
    A couple of suggestions to address problems you mentioned:
    * In a similar diorama in the future, you might think about putting the vehicle at a crossroads. This allows you to add the visual interest of fences (or whatever) without obscuring the detail. And you can get more detail on the crossing road surface that won't be hidden by the vehicle, too. Heck, maybe even a military policeman directing traffic down the correct road.
    * You might think about edging the road differently on each side, perhaps a fence on one side (or corner), a hedgerow, an earthen bank, trees .... Just to get a bit of variety.
    * The roads followed by armies tend to be heavily debris-strewn, by the retreating enemy, by refugees, and by the advancing army. A broken wooden chair, some discarded ration wrappers, a simple rag doll, .... There are lots of choices that you could make to imply a story without really detracting from the main subject.
    All that said, I think your work on armor detailing is absolutely stellar and your TH-cam videos are the best on the subject that I've found. Thank you, and please keep them coming.

      If nothing else, they captured the gloomy atmosphere perfectly, and the movie is a good source of inspiration for modellers.

      @@bageled_meme2690 the biggest reason it was done like that(engagement scene) was that they had the tiger for literally one day and it could only go forward. They were limited in how to do the fight. My biggest gripe is every sherman knocked out, the entire crews died, but fury gets hit by different weapons and nothing. Lol. You know how much better the movie would have been if an infantry platoon was with the tank instead of star wars stormtroopers shooting at it. On that, i did enjoy the movie. It had vehicles you would never see in other films. It just needed a better director.

    How about placing a little brass name plate on the side? It might make a small change in its appearance. (like it’s not awesome anyway👀)

    Could you make a destroyed tank? I think it would be cool to have it sinking into some deep mud with multiple shots that penetrated through Its side.

    Just 3D print some tracks so you use those as marks in dioramas

    Bruh. Why do you paint static grass? Just put it on last.

    Your thumbnail made me think that you should make an entire diorama in black and white as if it were a photograph in 3d. I've never seen it done before and I think it could have a great effect. Love the vids, keep it up!

    Hey Martin, I really enjoy watching you modeling tutorials. I have one question, is it ok to use tamiya acrylics on a wet pallet? I notcied that you used vallejo paints on the wet pallet. Thanks

    From my own experience : test the static grass application first on a scrap piece of terrain. And before you add bigger items, because you will never reach in the corners, like around a fence. 👍

      Good advice, I still haven't tried it although it already arrived. True with the fence part, I think the best way will be to "plant the lawn" first and then start adding items like fences, road signs etc.

    Of COURSE you're happier with the Soviet T series tank than the capitalist US tank.
    You're from Eastern Europe after all... :D
