Terrific explanation for us beginners.. This is the type of teaching we beginners need. It is beyond frustrating to watch videos that skip steps assuming we know anything about cnc operation. Showing each area to mouse click on is great. I am a college graduate in a very tough medical degree and cnc operation is testing my brain to the nth degree. I appreciate your teaching method.

Thanks for the vid series. Perhaps some paper on the wood, then lowering the tool to leave a mark at the start and finish of the moves would increase accuracy.

The math is really quite easy. Distance actually traveled divided by the distance it should travel gives a ratio ; 107.5 / 100 = 1.075:1 .... Look up the currently set steps (860). Divide steps by the previously calculated ratio ; 860 / 1.075 = 800. Reset steps to 800. Done.

Or you could say 1 full rotation of the screw is 8 mm and there are 200 steps per rotation and because settings say 800 that mean he's using quarter steps. So 8 mm divided by 800 equals .01 mm per quarter step.🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂

In my experience the only time you need to adjust steps per mm is when you have changed stepper motor angle type, stepper controllers that have a different micro stepping defualt or lead screw pitch. These machine are simply incapable of the level of sub thou accuracy that would ever need compensation due to say thermal expansion, I saw your previous video where your pocket was incorrectly sized, but that was because you did not set the tool width compensation value. It was not a steps per mm issue.

Awesome video, I appreciate for this explanation, I have the same machine, with the same size moving base plate, my engraver bit moves in X axis for entire length but in Y axis only 120 mm, please can I use the same concept to expand the Y axis size ? Because my project size requires 160 mm in Y axis. Which number for Y axis needs to increase? Thanks very much for your help.😊🙏

Hi Jerry, Google, GRBL $ code list
      www.diymachining.com/downloads/GRBL_Settings_Pocket_Guide_Rev_B.pdf
You could put in $3=6 this will change the axis direction

Can anyone tell me why my z axis wants to go beyond it's stopping points and start thudding like trying to go further. And, if I set the zero point with the button it doesn't recognize it and buries the bit everytime? Help please.

No, No Roger, that's fuzzy logic........I just can''t do it.....with Mach 3 you specify the move and the axis to move.......G00 to rapid to X00 ,Y00 (G54) etc and G01 to feed to X50 Y50 etc, add a bit of Z to go down......that is so logical I write my own G code and I'm an 80 year old noob at best.
It's only 2.5D but what the heck, you can write that manually so easy......3D needs a CAM solution.
If I indulge in one of these toys.....they're all toys now I'm retired.....I'll have to redo the op system to run with Mach3 and a Gecko drive....whatever...hang the cost.
