Salt has many usages in the aquarium world. Do you have to use it? Absolutely not! Here are the most common usages for salt.
And before we start, “salt” means sodium chloride. And NOTHING else!
Improved osmoregulation. If you’ve watched our “dropsy” video ( • Fish Facts - "Dropsy" ... ), you’ll know fish are more dense than their surroundings, pushing water into the fish. At low levels of salt (1.0-1.5 ppt), there is less stress put on the gills and kidneys through this process. We recommend this for fish recovering from trauma and surgery.
Algae treatment. If you have any live plants in your pond or tank, they won’t like it either.
Parasite treatment. Higher levels of salt can shrivel up lots of parasites and is certainly a very safe treatment method.
Fungus treatment. See our fungus video for more information.
Determining pond volume. It is critical that all pond owners know the volume of their pond. Learn how to calculate pond volume using salt here: russellwatergardens.com/pages....
