you should go at the end of the day around 2.30 before the market closes, the produce they have left can be even cheaper!

Farmers in that area are very competitive with selling their produce, when it comes to being near Supermarkets especially. In the UK you'll notice everything is on a smaller scale, so there's an importent choice in where to shop, and you guys hit the jackpot, Great Job!👍

All of that produce can be grown in the Uk. Tomatoes are very easy to grow as are berries so long as you keep care of them so they are all pretty affordable here in the uk. I also know that certain areas of England are very high competitively so have to have low prices because of that. It very much depends on where you go

You should make ALOT of spaghetti and then when ur done u should freeze the left overs and have it when it’s a lazy day and u don’t wanna make something to eat you can just reheat the sauce and boil some pasta ;)

Berries cost a lot in the US (where I live). It sucks because that means I don’t get to have them very often and sometimes they’re not very fresh.

It helps too that the UK is smaller than the US. Shipping food from the UK to Ireland is a shorter distance than shipping oranges from Florida to upper NYS. Getting food from other countries in the UK is a shorter trip.

I live near the Tennessee/Kentucky boarder and get stuff that cheap all the time from Amish/Mennonite farmers or just local farmers! A lot of the cost is transportation so the closer you are the better the deal. The UK is tiny in comparison so even driving from one end to the other is a smaller fee.

For me, I have a local upick in the summer in southern US and it cost me $11 USD for a 5 gal bucket (18.9 L) full of fresh produce I picked. Now I have to pick it myself in the hot sun, but i am allowed up to 10 buckets a day if I want. I actually do it really early in the morning and have so much fresh produce that lasts for a couple months just chilling on the hanging baskets I have. I’ll make refrigerator pickles too and can tomatoes.

And if you have leftover sause- there's always the choice of making your own special pizza. The options are endless, so you can only choose what satisfies your cravings.

The price of fruit and veg in the UK is considered usually expensive compared to most of Europe, although I would say those are good prices, especially because none of that fruit is in season (if you shot that recently). A lot of the fruit in Europe is actually grown in huge greenhouses in Spain. But I don't know if that's the case in this case.

There is a chutney you can have, maybe with momos, it's made with tomatoes, red onions, dried red chillies and garlic.
It's made by sauteing them until the onions are translucent and the tomatoes are broken down.
Then just blend it in a blender.
The ratio of tomato to onions is 2:1

You can cut the tomatoes in half, lay them on a baking sheet face up, sprinkle some simple seasonings on them and bake on the lowest oven temp to dehydrate them for several hours! They become these savory roasted tomatoes that taste similar to sundried tomatoes. You can put them on pizza, fresh bread with cheeses or oil and vinegar. They're SO GOOD ❤️

  • @lolaphilippe2993

With the tomatoes, I do this for a nice breakfast:
First, i would slice a small white onion into strips.
Then I would finely chop some garlic (maybe 2 cloves)
Then cook the onion and garlic in some olive oil so they are soft but not brown.
Then add maybe a handful and a bit of quartered or halved tomatoes.
Squash the tomatoes to let some of the juices out when they are soft.
Then take this out and add a fry an egg in the same pan.
Then add a small bit of butter and then toast a bagel or some bread.
    Finally assemble it and enjoy!
This is quite long but it is an idea of what to do with the tomatoes. Also this only feeds one person depending on the size of onion and tomatoes

I might be wrong but I don’t think any of those fruits/veggies were grown locally - most likely the were imported from Spain etc.
I think this stand in the video was one of the stands that buy the produce from central markets (those markets that also supply restaurants and open at like 4-5am) and then sell the produce on the same day. That’s why they are less expensive. But I think if you had bought the exact same products at Lidl/Aldi,… they would have been just as „fresh“ since they also import their veggies etc from Spain etc.
But generally speaking buying fresh locally grown produce from the Farmers market can also be very affordable in Europe.

    • @AimeeColeman
      @AimeeColeman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

That's not from a farmer's market. That's just from a grocer stall in the middle of the high street. Those people import their produce from all over the world just like big supermarkets, and those little grocers are all over the south of the UK. I used to live in bath and know exactly the stall she went to, too. The guy who runs it is really friendly but he's not a farmer selling his produce, he's just selling the regular, cheap import stuff, which is, admittedly, much better than supermarket stuff, especially Sainsbury's.

My grandmother always made sauce from scratch. One of her recipes was saute (med-low heat) onion, garlic, then add in tomatoes cut in half and cook first on the cut side. As they get soft, we'd start to mash them. She'd add sugar, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (to taste). Then add asparagus, then fresh shrimp. She'd make pasta from scratch and we'd boil it, then add the pasta to finish cooking in the sauce. Then turn off the heat and add peccorino romano and basil.
    One of my childhood meals!

Yummm... Just cut them in half and throw them in a pan with olive oil, salt and basil! Cook until they squash and thicken. Makes the creamiest tomato sauce! Bag and freeze portioned up. When needed just warm it up in a pan and toss in spaghetti (but I think bavette are better) with a bit of their cooking water. The best simplest dish ever!

    Make bruschetta!!
We get small mozzarella balls and quarter them and mix that with fresh basil and salt and pepper. Cut and saute tomatoes in a pan until they are almost soft.
Mix with the mozzarella and basil and spoon onto toasty bread. We use the $1 loaves of French bread from Walmart 😆
Then pop into the oven on a lowish heat until the cheese gets just a little bit melty. Maybe 6-8 minutes.

My grandparents lived through the great depression, a tomato from the garden with a pinch of salt was a beloved dessert to them. Anything they didnt eat fresh would get canned for future use. Boil the tomatoes for 60 seconds then ice bath them, peel the skin and fill the jars and add a squeeze of lemon juice to help prevent spoilage. You can add onions, garlic, chillies or peppers, spices, herbs to the jar and label and date it. They can last 18 months if kept properly and will merry the flavors in the jar. Then you have a base to work with and leave room for choices later on how to use them...👍

Or, 3) buy some pasta and make baked feta and fresh tomato pasta.
Or, 4) rub a garlic clove on toast, slice up tomatoes and basil and layer on the toast and sprinkle it all with vinegar and an oil of your choice. (I don't like olive oil - I either butter the bread first or use avocado oil.) Yummy!

Skin them by blanching and then simmer them for a few hours with garlic, onion, basil, a few bay leaves because that’s how Nonna does it , enough black pepper to kill a small child, and fatty/boney cuts of pork. You know it’s done when the meat starts to break down and you get threads of it in the sauce, usually around the 6hr mark! The rendered pork fat makes the tomato sauce super rich, glossy, and delicious 😍
Not ~Italian~ Italian, but that’s how Italian Americans do it these days!

THOSE TOMATOES LOOK SOOOOO GOOD! I'm drooling. And even more so because it is December in the northeastern part of the US.
I would quarter them, take some(Ok LOTS!)of garlic, onions, cucumbers and maybe radishes, slice them up & put them in a big container with a little olive oil and lots of rice wine vinegar.Yummm.or make salsa! Or Pico de gallo.or stew them! Make marinara!
Or the absolute BEST thing to do with beautiful tomatoes is to slice them and make a tomato sandwich!

Oven dried tomatoes are very good. You can put them in multiple recipes. They store better. Sometimes I eat them as snacks.

Can those tomatoes girlfriend! Then you'll have fresh tasting tomatoes for future recipes. Or, you can slice them and dehydrate them completely, then store in oil (sun dried tomatoes) or just dry in airtight bags in cupboard. Also, blueberries freeze very nicely. Freeze them on trimmed trays and transfer to freezer bags for storage. Your so lucky!

In Canada (where I live), inflation is so high rn, that many tomatoes would be over $40. Maybe even over $60. And people wonder why so many workers are complaining about low wages. Who can even afford to eat and do anything else rn.

A small stand doesn’t mean it’s local though. Many of them import products like every supermarket does, so always check where it’s from, it’s very likely that fresh fruit isn’t local in any other season than summer.

I would dehydrate the tomatoes there perfect size for sun dried but I lived in the U.K for almost 6 years so I know you don't get enough sun. I used to dehydrate them when I lived there. Just a idea or pasta sauce and freeze until you need more. Hope you enjoyed the U.K. Have you tried Branston pickle on sharp cheddar cheese? I ate that and Indian take away during my pregnancy. Cheers

For the tomatoes you could maybe make some fresh salads or cut them into halves and sear them to eat with some type of carb like bread or pasta
