Excellent review! Pretty much my sentiments exactly. I know it's been said before, but I preferred Quicksilver without Dino. I just never seen where he really improved the group. I liked the vocals better when Gary and Dave were doing them. The guitar inter-play between John and Gary was the true magic, in my humble opinion.
I agree. Dino was poison...completely wrecked the dynamic. And I agree with Trannon...their best is a tossup between QMS and Happy Trails. And btw....there are some excellent boots and live releases out there.
Impeccable taste. Happy Trails is indeed a masterpiece. Timeless. Cipollina and Duncan transcended the Bo Diddly song into one of the great albums ever.
Good to see Quicksilver ranked. For me, nothing tops the debut album. I remember hearing "Pride Of Man" and "Dino's Song" on the underground FM stations back then and rushing out to buy the album.
I agree. The debut is hard to beat. It truly fluctuates between that album and Trails for me. I just love Maiden of the Cancer Moon so much that it won the day for me. 😁
Touché. Your list matches mine exactly. As for the album Quicksilver, Fire Brothers is the track that really stands out for me. I'm not a big Valenti fan, but his voice blends with the sound in an eerie ethereal way.
The best Quicksilver material is the live recordings from 1966-67, when they were a five-piece band: Cipollina, Elmore, Duncan, Freiberg and Jim Murray. They never quite captured it on record, although the first 2 are pretty good. Forget about the stuff once Dino Valenti joined. Lots of personel changes on the later lps. Good review.
The top 3 Quicksilver Messenger Service picks are no-brainers. I also had them in the same order. There is a 4th album named "Anthology" that captures a huge chunk of these 3 albums and the best of the rest. I do not think that it is a coincidence that David Freiberg was the lead singer and bass player for their best albums. You do not hear him mentioned very much when this band is mentioned.
I like your list. Agree that Happy Trails is an all-time classic (and yes, Maiden is a stand-out), and I agree that their debut comes close behind it. And yes, Shady Grove runs third.
@@trannongoble7722 I left the happy trails at the thrift store before i knew about them i saw the cover and thought it was a country album. Even though i had heard the song Fresh when they used to play it on the radio. Great video!
I added this before you got to your third least favorite. You have the right idea. And a good ear. Before you get to it. My favorite is Shady Grove and favorite song is 'Words can't Say'. Lets see where you go with this ! Cheers.
Nice list! Here’s mine: 1. Happy Trails (1969) - one of my favourite albums of all time. 2. Quicksilver Messenger Service (1968) - a tremendous debut. 3. Comin’ Thru (1972) - not a huge fan of the first three songs, but the last four seriously rock! 4. Shady Grove (1969) - a bit too much piano for my liking, but some great songs. 5. What About Me (1970) - I agree with you that this and Just For Love have a very strange, tinny production, but for the most part, the songs are decent. 6. Just For Love (1970) - a solid album, but ‘The Hat’ is the only lengthy QMS song I can’t get into. 7. Quicksilver (1971) - aside from a couple of tunes, I find this album to be quite mediocre. 8. Solid Silver (1975) - a very bland, mainstream-sounding rock record. I tend to avoid this one. Here’s my top 10 songs too: 1. Calvary 2. The Fool 3. Who Do You Love Suite 4. Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder 5. Mona 6. Gold And Silver 7. California State Correctional Facility Blues 8. Maiden Of The Cancer Moon 9. Forty Days 10. Joseph’s Coat Honourable mentions, in chronological order: Dino’s Song It’s Been Too Long Cobra Fresh Air Local Colour Subway Song For Frisco Play My Guitar Mojo Don’t Lose It
The Quicksilver Messenger Service was a Great band when it was a four piece band, especially LIVE and even with Nicky Hopkins, Shady Grove, but when Dino came into the band full time it was just not as good. When they lost John Cipollina... it was no longer QMS........JMHO...... instrumentals - Acapulco Gold & Silver and the FOOL.......
Sobre los Quicksilver., me ha parecido que el al um que mas le gusta ., es Piece by Piece ,yo le tuve y no me gustó ... Just for love, What about me y Comin Thru , son mis favoritos ., sobre gustos ...3

The "fresh" and "about me" were tailor made for Dino Valenti

Gwynn Oak: Absolutely. I am glad that our opinions agree.

Agreed. :)
Dino Valentí on Home again was a good psychedelic ballad
Once saw John Cippolina and Nick
Gravenites in a little club in Stockholm, marvelous guitarplayer
With you completely on Happy Trails. Can’t stop listening to it.
Two groups-Pre Dino and with Dino. Saw both groups loved each.
I agree with the rankings but both Hawaiian albums are gems.

@@trannongoble7722 Can't argue with that. Happy Trails is a close second for me!

The Fool off the first album was my favorite. Good job, they were great in concert
Saw quicksilver, Fleetwood Mac, savory brown Long beach area...end 60s they gave j s at front door..my first concert

Yes. He has a unique voice. "Fresh" has his name all over it. Same for "about me"
Gary Duncan sings Fire brothers
The cover of what about me looks like one of those San Francisco houses.

Good order of albums agree with many of you're choices...good video thx
The version of Dino’s Song captured at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival is simply phenomenal.
Believe it or not, but I've never heard a QMS album before! I need to remedy that, and will use your video here as a guide. Thanks, Trannon.
Wow! Yeah, I really prefer the debut album or Happy Trails. I'd recommend starting with the debut or even a compilation.

I never knew they had that many albums. I have heard the top three you picked. One of the more underrated groups. I do like your picks.
one of the very best is the double live album recorded in june 1968.That is.. Quicksilver Messenger Service.
I agree 100%
