This video is from Sonoma State College in April of 1970. This was a free concert for the college students and local community. This is a well-recorded video/ audio for it's time. What was truly amazing was guest artist, Nicki Hopkins, playing a grand piano somewhere in the background. I was there with my friends, dancing in the fresh spring air. What a different world it was! So glad that this showed up on you tube.
I arrived one or two days later. Only managed to see the Bronze Hog and Osceola. Slept on the island overnight (or maybe that was somewhere else?). Sense of Freedom was great. Tried not to think too much about the people being killed in SE Asia..

Nothing better then a QMS gigs. Takes be back to 1966 & going to the city every weekend to see the Quicksilver Messenger Service through 1970. They were the king of the jam bands. The dueling lead guitar work between John Cipollina & Gary Duncan where phenomenal. The band was so tight.

Talk about back then. Back then there was only one overweight young woman pictured. All the rest of us were skinny and she looks out of place. 53 years later, I'm still thin and 22. What about you?

The 1st time i saw this video, i noted it as well at 1:10 when the kid ran through the grass stage, right next to Gary Duncan who, at that moment, jumped on the song. A moment Representative of the time. Thanks, an Old Youth.
Just had to come back for my fix, been hooked on the Quicksilver Messenger Service since 1966. It takes me back to my youth when we were young & had hope. Just need some Fresh Air!
Does it get any better than this?! Man, I got heavy into this band in '68 and I'm still into them. Sorry to hear of the passing of Gary Duncan--we were the same age.
One of the Greatest West Coast Bands from the classic 60s Era. A stellar lineup of talent and songwriting. When you hear an old Quick Silver song it is unmistakable to not recognize their place in History. I love The Alman’ Brothers and Butterfield Blues Band-But these guys had it going on too!!!!
Never get tired of seeing the best jam band of 60's San Francisco Sound. I saw them every weekend from 1966 till late 1968. Still saw them in the 70's but they weren't playing the the city every weekend like the old days.
This is absolutely wonderful, and somewhat miraculous, for the age, considering camera and sound equipment in 1969. Truly a great clip. QMS were the best. Tragic they were separated in their prime by the repressive marijuana laws of the day.
@TheQuicksilverdog That's 'cause they were hanging out in Hawaii and we were the fortunate recipients of the best band around. Lots of free concerts, we were big fans and groupies!
What a delightful recording. Rock, beauty, and youth at its sweetest. When the camera shifts from the drummer to the singer's eyes, perfectly aligned, it deserves a little Oscar.
I was only 11, so while I may have missed the "scene" at the time, I discovered Happy Trails when i was about 15 and still listen to it every once and a while, and it still makes my heart go bumpidy bump....!
Think I could watch this everyday & never get tired of it. Quicksilver was the best back of the city bands (SF) in 60's. Used to see them almost every weekend from '66 till the road off into the sunset.
Back in the 60's we would have called a great group like " Quicksilver" ... "Bitchin " any other Californians out there who remember that endearing term ?
Dana Brinkmeier I heard it from surfers starting at least by '62 or '63 in the South Bay, L.A. As many transitioned into hippiedom it continued. Another term in use at the time was 'boss'. Then there was stoked, misterioso, etc. Tom Wolfe got it all down in The Pump House Gang.
Yeah, this clip rocks! But "Go Ride the Music" was only available in third and fourth generation bootlegs for years and years; The now commercially available DVD set includes "West Pole" and is a seriously quite inexpensive. Unlike "Fresh Air" all I did here was post an excerpt under fair use for educational purposes, without any audio or video tweaking. There is little video of the band available, sadly. I'm glad you share my joy at seeing them play & exposing others to the wonder. :)
This was out behind Sonoma State (College at the time) in front of the pond, a freebie unannounced noon concert . . we thought we were getting the best education possible . . Dino Valente made an ingratiating show of throwing joints out to the audience
+Susan Hayden Makes me wish I was young again and HE was young again. Don't know how he looks now but you're right---gorgeous! I agree with ege1993: the most underrated band of all time.
Well Good Grief!! I bought the Hapy Trails album the month it came out - and until today (about 40 years later) I'd never seen them moving. Outstanding!! Thanks so much for putting this film on. x David (happy in London)
Oh those were the days, best time of my life. Nothing better then going to the city every weekend to see the Quicksilver Messenger Service back in the 60's. What a stage trip it was.
This video captures, I contend, the real spirit of the "summer of Love". You had a great band doing a great extended version of a rock classic to a highly entusiastic live audience. God, I miss those days...but they were great while they lasted.
I’m wishing Gary Duncan, had a house built right next to me 🥰Whew!! He’s such a handsome man, love his voice and guitar slinging skills. What’s weird is the outfit he’s wearing looks like it could have come out of my closet, back then too. Love the fashions we had, a great time to grow up
Is that the Marin County Fairgrounds in the background? Bought my first house in San Rafael in 1974 for $48,500. Now it's priced around $1 million. Strange doesn't begin to describe it.

Great band and amazing film footage, the sourroundings, the sky ,the people dancing in trance, the wha wha pedal, thanks you for sharing this amazing video.
Those early days in Golden Gate Park, sweet breeze blowing up from the ocean with the perfume of “Mary Jane”. All of us of one mind and heart. All for free. The “Flower Kids” from parts unknown hadn’t been invited to the party yet. Just us native Californians.
What a great sound! Really moving post. Two fantastic sides to this band. No better outdoor jam, and then Shady Grove. I feel lucky to have heard this when I was young. It became a permanent part of me. Just got a copy of Shady Grove today, which got me to searching here. If you haven't been back to that album in ages (20 years for me), you've got to hear tracks 1,2,4 and 8. Thanks Aurora!
@cullyred ....DAMN, I went to Sonoma State University from 1982-1984. Would've been nice to see shows like this. They used to call it "Granola State".....Those rolling hills that can be seen in the backround has a place called GRAVITY HILL....We used to do bowls of skunk and sometimes trip on L, and freak as our car rolled backward while going uphill !
Yeh, noticed that first time I saw this. Down here (NZ) we call them half mast'. Unfortunate, because it detracts a wee bit from the music. Whenever there's a full shot of Gary Duncan, instead of watching his great guitar playing, my eyes drift down to those half-mast pyjamas. Probably the height of cool in SF in 1967 though.
I love this video. You have a bunch of middle class, pasty white kids dancing around to one of the best acid rock, long haired bands around, at the height of the Haight ashbury era.
Remarkable footage - less is more when it comes to the stage and lack of backdrop. It's like watching someone playing in your back garden, really laid back and the essence of live music at that point in time.
outstanding sound after all these years...I love Gary Duncan..John C was pure geniuous...what an excellent band...who do you love? quicksilver messenger service..lol
Yes, Nicky Hopkins is playing for this show, you can catch just a glimpse of him on another of the QMS videos of this same show on "Go Ride the Music". My information is that this lineup lasted until early 1970.
I loved QMS, saw them several times, in 1968-1971, John Cippolino was such an excellent guitar player. My husband and I were lucky enough to go ona New Years Eve cruise of the Oakland/San Francisco bay, in 1981, John was playing in the band that night, at the private party we were invited to, it was awesome 👏
This is good. Thanks for sharing. Always been one of my favorite bands. I got lucky and went to see them a few years before Cipolina died. It was maybe 1975 or '76. They played at a tiny venue called Painters Mill in Maryland. There was maybe fifty or sixty people there. A small intimate place. They played on the floor in front of us for about 90 minutes. Maybe four or five feet away from the audience, I was young and had no idea how lucky I was to be there. NFA Where is Mr. Natural when you need him? 😅
So you got a band already on their way to being legendary basically just playing out on the grass somewhere that looks like a free concert? Yes, those were the days. John Cipollna gets the credit for their great guitar sound, but Gary Duncan drove much of it. You can see him do that here. Maybe not that easy to catch given the camera work and editing, but he’s definitely the star.
Hey, how it going over there, Elmo Quicksilver's drummer was at Nick Gravenites 80th B-Day Bash up here on the Russian River. They did "Pride of Man" for Nick's friend John Cipollina. What a gig that was! Everyone hip from SF 60s & still with us were there!
Loved his dedication to the art of mindbending creative use of his talent to explore and perform the sound poems and beautiful journey he took his audiences on, I hope the young players today can balance the scale in the same way…….and discover the way to channel this type of creativity and dedication to continue the magic this man left to be enjoyed by us all!thank you JOHN!
The "guy lookin' like a rock star" is Dino Valente, I'm guessing. As Kesey said of QMS in "The last Suppliment," they began to suffer from "too mucho macho"! This is after Dino's coming to the band, and I have to agree, tho I dig his singing on "Just for Love" and "What About Me". "The Hat" is GREAT, especially heard under the influence of . . . well . . . some of us are still metaphorically "on the Bus," right?
Thanks for this particular version of QMS playing Mona! It has a distinctly hot live sound. Has it been remixed and retweaked? Because the guitar sound and the rhythm section are clear and right there. Besides loving QMS the sonic, driving tone of this version is right in your face it almost makes me feel or its 1967 again; and I'm seeing them again! And that's good. Hoping there's more groovadelic versions of the them mixed like that! Thanks again more people need QMS.
Bo Diddley's beat is in my soul. His music still raises the hair on my neck. I was blessed with seeing him back in the day. 1st saw him at the original "Fillmore Auditorium" in the 60’s. Been hooked on Bo since I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1955. He played “Bo Diddley”.
That is Dino Valente, aka Chet Powers, aka aka, about whom many have very strong feelings, and can be seen wailing away on "Fresh Air" here on youtoob. Perhaps the most noteworthy of his compositions was (Lets) Get Together (covered by many and a big hit for the Youngbloods), which he allegedly sold the rights to cover legal costs over a drug charge. His original demo is posted at this time th-cam.com/video/i8xpHGR7EI4/w-d-xo.html
I woke this morning with HAPPY TRAILS to YOU & YOURS on my mind and the opportunity I had to work with ROY & DAYLE..When I was a child I grew up watching Roy I met ROY DAYLE & DUSTY and ended up doing a Documentary for A&E on them what a great opportunity to work face to face with one of your childhood hero's.. TO this day I had "HAPPY TRAILS" in my sign off.. we grew up in great times when hero's where indeed our hero's.. and life was much simpler ,,and of Course Quick Silver
This might have been the Sonoma State College concert they put on. I missed it, but I saw them the year before at Santa Rosa Jr. college, It was the first time I had ever seen a light show. One of my favorite bands of that time.
True that there were many great bands around at that time, but I always thought the difference with Led Zeppelin was that you felt their music, not just heard it.
Que Lepzepelin hay mejores, esta banda fue genial, pero igual que muchas bandas norteamericanas no las afanaron las revistas de música, esta banda existió antes que Lepzepelin
No comparison to the mighty Led Zep. QMS didn’t have consistency among the group members, songwriting skills. The moon and stars were in perfect alignment when Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham formed a band. Do love QMS though, great band wish I’d seen them in person.
Your missing the whole point about people having to dance like they took lessons . They are high as kites and having a good time and are not the least embarrassed to get down to some music that deserves to be boogied to , . But your right about Cippolina . Cant forget Gary Duncans snake charmer riff that blows my mind
Kudos should go to bwaje who originally posted this.. it's only recently became commercially available along with West Pole, I think you will absolutely love the 2 DVD set and it's a tremendous bargain. IMHO. I've noticed (when radio intrudes) a bit of PCs have changed everything, but a 128 track studio in ones home does not replace the hard work, practice, and constant live shows these folks did. Some things will never be the same...
All the comments below express my love for this band & video recording better than I ever could. Got to see them twice, once outside much like this, a free concert for the public. I am sure the band got paid it was on the University of Maryland campus. A question for others who got to see them, Dino during the concert on several occasions would throw out a handful orange looking pills, perhaps 'California Sunshine'? Wished I'd of got one but still an incredible time smiling the whole afternoon spending it with our beloved QSMS

They played at a tiny venue called Painters Mill in Maryland. There was maybe fifty or sixty people there. A small intimate place. They played on the floor in front of us for about 90 minutes. Maybe four or five feet away from the audience, I was young and had no idea how lucky I was to be there.

Where is Mr.
Sonoma State University
Duncan's playing and singing are phenomenal on this one, sweet bluesy tone and that's one cool 50's LP Custom he's playing too!
Such incredibly interesting sound❤
Possibly the best live vid I've ever seen!
@NolanVoid-dr1ch possibly the best live film I’ve ever seen
More soulful than the original. Cipollina so good.
Gary Duncan’s playing and singing lead….wow!!💘
This Band had talent, Man!! Their Music will LIVE...
An invisible Nicky Hopkins playing the killer piano here.
Ahhhhhhhhhh the good old days! Great post.
Thank you.
Hey, how it going over there, Elmo Quicksilver's drummer was at Nick Gravenites 80th B-Day Bash up here on the Russian River. They did "Pride of Man" for Nick's friend John Cipollina. What a gig that was! Everyone hip from SF 60s & still with us were there!
greetings from the other coast! Sounds like a great party!
@@aurora1957A Best gig in 30 years, small venue. Was surprised only 2 videos of it is all that's out, was hoping they would make a DVD of whole day.
@@aurora1957A Annie Sampson was up 1st, am in video. can you find me, LOL. th-cam.com/video/ISAHv9jU3Ds/w-d-xo.html
Because the guitar sound and the rhythm section are
clear and right there. Besides loving QMS the sonic, driving tone of this version is right in
your face it almost makes me feel or its 1967 again; and I'm seeing them again! And that's
good. Hoping there's more groovadelic versions of the them mixed like that! Thanks again
more people need QMS.
Happy Trails to y'all x
Takes me right back to Flower Power, thanks Minstral2
Haven’t heard this song in years or even thought of it. Don’t know why; it’s classic.
This is so freakin' amazing. Thanks a lot for the upload! I appreciate it !
Dropping by for a top up Aurora..Happy Trails mate.
...chur, and more chur!
This might have been the Sonoma State College concert they put on. I missed it, but I saw them the year before at Santa Rosa Jr. college, It was the first time I had ever seen a light show. One of my favorite bands of that time.
That Bo Diddley beat. These guys crushed live. Glad this film survives.
wow.. not my experience, saw Duncan two years ago and he was pretty professional.. even signed autographs after the QMS set..
I was there. Psycho Doolic day in Sonoma
Hard to believe just how incredible Cipollino was as a musician !!
still makes me feel so fuckin good. I feel like I'm breaking a law. actually I am but that's going to change in my lifetime I'm only 66
Makes me wonder why Led Zeppelin was such a supergroup, when there's so many bands from the time period that are just as good.🤔
True that there were many great bands around at that time, but I always thought the difference with Led Zeppelin was that you felt their music, not just heard it.
We had lots of super groups, lol.Led Zeppelin Just utilized the publicity better.
@NolanVoid-dr1ch How many songs did they write for ALL of their albums?
One of my Fav Marin bands ! Got too talk too gary duncan, bought JC a drink one night and meant Dino V son !!!
They look ten yrs older at Monterey in "67" 3 yrs ago.🤣☮️
I just love this!! Another watch before I call it a NIGHT!!
This is a masterpiece!
Never seen this video before tonite! Luv QMS and this song reminds me why !
did meet john in the 80s in nyc ,cool dude!
