Jackals normally hold their guns so that they don't clip with the shields, I guess the shotgun is similar enough in the space it takes up in a cross-section that it just happens to look right with their normal stance. To my knowledge the jackal shields don't have an actual collision box in any of the games, they just stop projectiles and register damage to the shields if a projectile enters their coordinates. And judging by how the grunt holds the magnum I'd guess where the gun looks like it is has little to do with where the projectile actually is. If you stand right in front of someone with a sniper, the gun model will clip through you but the projectile still hits you.
Is the jackal shield actually solid in a way that you could nock a gun in the firing hole canonically? Also the grunts normally aim their plasma pistol pretty weirdly too, but the firing angle doesn't look so wrong with a plasma pistol

I’m guessing they can hold it because the Jackle can use a carbine, beam rifle, and a plasma pistol, which would allow for them to hold other small arm/ dual wield able weapon, the unsc sniper and the br because it would be the unsc equivalent of the carbine. The grunt can hold the rocket launcher because it is the unsc equivalent of the fuel rod, and as with the previous statement about small arm weapons, they would be able to hold the unsc counterpart. The only strange thing is the shotgun.

It looks like the jackal is resting the barrel of the sniper rifle within the gap of the shield, like a makeshift bipod. Kinda neat, if probably unintentional.
My thought for as to why the jackals are coded to use UNSC weapons: in the final 2 levels you can see brutes equip and collect human weapons so maybe jackals were planned to use UNSC weapons but the idea was scrapped with the code left in without any squads set to spawn with them.

Used to do this all the time as a kid as a challenge and cause of curiousity, was fun on uprising seeing a grunt take out wraiths with a rocket launcher but 4/5 times blowing itself up
You should see post 343 Guilty Spark grunts/jackals/brutes in SPV3. They were actually programmed by the SPV3 devs to hold UNSC weapons perfectly. Seeing covenant resort to using UNSC weapons makes the flood situation on alpha halo alot more dire.
About time! i asked for this video in the Halo 5 prophets bane video. I actually realized that the grunts can use rocket launcher on Uprising, and they are actually really deadly with it too!
It does have one near the end but you'll never be able to get your Jackals all the way to that part. They stop following you after a certain point and are impossible to push further either.
Grunts are allies on uprising, and you can get unsc rocket launchers from the brutes weapons cache before the end of the level (i dont remember if it is possible to get the rocket anywhere else on the level) you just have to keep them alive long enough to get that far and get them down the waterfall as they will not jump themselves (in my experience)
I always gave the Grunts Rocket Launchers/ Fuel Rod guns on Uprising if I was able to keep them alive. Unfortunately by the point the rocket launcher appears the mission is basically over. I did manage to do this on Sacred Icon recently with the Scarab Gun Skull on solo. I had a good laugh at how they held the weapons, and discovered an interesting glitch with the Jackals. You know how they sometimes overcharge Plasma Pistols out of combat and just hold the charge? Well there’s a glitch where if you swap their weapon with an automatic weapon while their charging it, the firing animation/muzzle flash will play infinitely without bullets being fired. Normally this is only noticeable with the Needler, but it works with the SMG as well. Also the Grunts holding the pistol kind of makes sense I guess from a lore perspective, because Grunts like to trade human tapes and movies on the Covenant Black Market. Maybe some grunts saw people holding the Magnum gangster like and thought that was the cool way to do it.
The Jackal's not lowering their shields is kinda odd. I know when they hold the carbine the shield is off just like the beam rifle. I would have assumed the other two handed weapons would work the same way but apparently not and I'm pretty sure asyou observed the way they hold it is indeed based on how they hold carbines.
The jackals even flip the shield around so the sniper can go through the hole so it doesn’t go through the shield cause he flips it so it can go through one of the holes in either side of the shield instead of phasing through the shield. So I think at one time there was going to be more missions with the arbiter with more weapons. Probably before they scraped halo 2 original plan.
Oh they definitely can, Grunts can hold SMGs, Magnums and Rocket Launchers, and Jackals can hold SMGs, Magnums and Battle Rifles. In Sacred Icon, it's hard to get Grunts and Jackals to the part where the Flood first appear, and if you succeed, their weapons sometimes disappear.
I’d like to see a video showing off all the weapons you couldn’t test here on various AI. Just do the weapon swap in the SCNR tag. Could even try it on Hunters, or Tartarus, or Regret and flip him out of his chair!
For all the times I’ve played halo 2 back in the day, I never thought on giving these AIs human weapons. Mainly because when they get spooked they drop it

Hey general I was wondering if on legendary difficulty and you mod the game so grunts and jakles are on your team as master chief Do they gain the legendary bonuses?
I think a lot of it has to do with files and weapon coding, like grunts can hold pistols because the plasma pistol is also under the same category as a the magnum, pistol, while the rocket launcher and fuel-rod are under the general launcher category, in the files both are marked as 'npccanuse' thus making them completely usable, albeit a bit buggy. the only ones that weird me out are the SMG and the Shotgun, it raises the question of what other non-typical covenant weapons they can ALSO equip, like were jackals supposed to wield plasma rifles at one point? what category is the shotgun in that it allows it to be usable by jackals? etc.
This reminded me of the "heretic" squads from Reach firefight, they spawned in with UNSC weapons. I don't think I ever saw them spawn in the normal preset Firefight variants, just an option in custom. I actually can't remember now if it was just elites in the squads or if any other other races were also present and carried UNSC weapons, I don't have Reach installed currently so if someone remembers or could check that's be cool.
Bane? I can answer that. In matchmaking heretic squads were a possibility in arcadefight (firefight but with unlimited lives, ammo, and power weapons). These waves only had elites in them and they there were 3 possibilities: all with small arms (AR, DMR etc.), all with DMRs and Snipers, or all grenade launchers, lasers and BS homing rocket launchers.
Here's another question! Other than Elites who I assume can hold anything since you have to play as Arbiter, what other Covenant can hold UNSC, or just unusual weapons? Can Brutes use a SPNKR or dual wield? How about drones? Or even the Prophet! And hey, if a Sentinel can spawn with and shoot a needler I wonder if they or the enforcers can be given weapons if they were allies. The flood too! Even if some can't be manually given weapons, I wonder if they can be forcably replaced and if they'd still be able to shoot them. Imagine sentinels with fuel rod guns 😌

I feel like Grunts should be able to use the SMG as well given they can use the plasma rifle just fine. Be curious to see if they can use UNSC weapons in the other games like CE or 3. If the Marines can wield covenant weapons in those games the reverse may be true

You can't drive wraiths in ce I've been able to kill drivers before they get to it once you go up to the tank it doesn't give you the prompt to hold x to drive wraith
I know its not h2, but grunts can even pilot choppers and fire brute shots in h3. I was editing my own campaign to my liking on the Ark and accidentally set a grunt instead of a brute. They hold brute shots with 1 hand tho. and it looks odd.

My friend gave a friendly grunt a rocket launcher in co-op mode and he was surprised it was possible while I just could not stop laughing.

Did you do the Ultra Elites wielding Battle Rifles? It waa a secret i remember reading.
You can make protecting the grunts and jackals easier in the first area by using plasma grenades to blow up the holes the sentinels come out of.

Grunts can use mounted turrets like plasma cannons and shade turrets but they can't use vehicles aside from the Ghost.

This is false. There is a Rocket Launcher near the end of Uprising and if you keep the Grunts alive you can give it to them. No mods required.

I just looked up and the Mission is called aussault of the Control room.
Its somewhere in the middle of the mission, where you are coming out of the ice tunnel

You can't drive wraiths in ce I've been able to kill drivers before they get to it once you go up to the tank it doesn't give you the prompt to hold x to drive wraith
Allied jackals were neat for the short time we were with them.
I know its not h2, but grunts can even pilot choppers and fire brute shots in h3. I was editing my own campaign to my liking on the Ark and accidentally set a grunt instead of a brute. They hold brute shots with 1 hand tho. and it looks odd.
What about Centinels, Brutes and Drones???
