Living in Dallas Texas has its advantages. I have been playing golf for about 35 years, and I’m 41 now. I’ve never have owned or put in my bag anything else but the Hogan irons. I’ve always been fitted in The Ft. Worth home location. I currently just bought the 2020 forged PTX Pro. Irons with an Apex 4 stiff shaft. In the chrome satin finish. And love them. They’re gorgeous clubs looking down at them. Great job, Shielsy!!

I'm 64, golfed off & on all my life with an attitude "grip it & rip it". Always been between a 2 & 8 handicap. 2 handicap now. A lot of arms. Made a few changes to my swing late Aug. Massive improvement to accuracy & constant contact. Retired & decided to finally take this game serious. Never had a lesson & probably won't. Stubborn. End of last season I decided to finally take the time to learn & practice. Never done either with the game before. Got me thinking. Have never bought new clubs but have thought a lot about giving up my obsession with forged blades because the new tech out there I'm sure helps a great deal. Brings me to your video. Watched your channel for some time. Looking back threw your vids I came across this one. Always liked Ben Hogan irons. The look of a club is probably 80 if not 90% with me. These are one of the most beautiful clubs I've ever seen. Hogan doesn't (or didn't) make anything but excellent clubs. A little research sadly informed me they went out of business. Sad. Disappointed but it fell right into my not purchasing new clubs. Ebay led me to 2nd Swing in the USA & found a full set in black Listed as "Mint" rated 9.5. Long story (I know) short. It's 9 February 2023, I'm sitting at home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, snow covering the ground (as it does for 6 months a friggin year) waiting for May & golf season almost vibrating with excitement. Because..... Today between 10:30 am & 2:30 pm Fed-X is delivering my new/used set of Ben Hogan Icon Black irons. It's like Christmas as a child! Anyway thanks Rick for the great video. Golfers will understand this enthusiasm. Non golfers won't. All I have to say to them is "Once you've tried "GOLF" you'll never go back. lol. Thanks. "FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME"
Absolutely love the fact you’re testing Ben Hogan equipment, I’ve got the equalizer wedges in black and can confirm the black finish does hold up! I’ve had them 3-4 months now and still look great! Would live to see you test the ptx pro irons as now you can combo the icons with them and make an amazing looking cavity back/blade combo set!

I was going to buy ptx pro/ icon set. 6 weeks lead time. Ended up fitted for Cobra cb/mb. Told 10days got them 5weeks later then they got delivered to the wrong address! I couldn't imagine how these could be better! Cobras rock.
I recently purchased the hogan utility iron in 18 degrees and the equalizer 60 degree wedge. I wanted a more forgiving 2 iron replacement. I’m more than pleased with both. They feel terrific and look amazing.

Bought the icon irons and absolutely love them. Buttery smooth and forgiving for blades. Definitely worth more than the price I paid. I played lots of other blades from big companies and the icons blow them out of the water. Never thought I would play Hogans but now I won't take them out of my bag. I hit the ft worth hogan blades last year and they were awsome. On miss hits they were more forgiving than ping g20 cavity back irons and the feel was unbelievable. They are hand built forged and affordable. I think my buddy paid just over $ 600 .

A mate found a Ben Hogan "wood" in a council clean up - 25yrs+ old - best in between driver and hibrid he has ever hit!!! Love they are still making them

I bought a set of these when I finished grad school in May... Easily the best value and most underrated set of irons out there right now. That sole makes them shockingly good out of rough and bad lies, and the consistent gapping has made my yardages pretty stable. Great review, you ought to keep those in the bag dude ;)

I still absolutely LOVE my 1988 Hogan Apex Redline irons with Apex5 shafts. Hogan was an "aspirational" brand when I was growing up. Doctors, attorneys and otherwise wealthy individuals gamed Hogan clubs back in the 70s/80s. I could never afford them back then, but could much later. The 88 Redlines are still my all time favorite blades....even over my MP14, MP32, Nike First Gen Blades (from the FW foundry) and MacGregor 1025M.
I had a stroke in 2016 and two years ago was diagnosed with leukemia. I am doing pretty good but I miss golf so much. I got rid of most of my irons and I regret it. I want to play our game again so much I can taste it. These videos inspire even this chronically dizzy guy. I would love some new/used clubs.

It looks empty because most people play in the morning on weekdays and weekends and if you go out later than 4 o'clock there will be fewer people out, for the UK because the sun gets in the way at nightime

Alasdair Skelly thank you that makes sense, over here there are people at all hours, always packed. I believe only one day this whole summer we had a course to ourselves. It was on a Thursday and in the beginning of summer, and it was at 2 pm. Only happened once! Seems no matter when I go now there are people everywhere clogging up the course! I get it, I love golf and so do they but sheesh. It can be annoying

Beautiful looking irons and it's really good that the finish wasn't damaged after your bunker test. The best irons that I have ever used was a set of Maxfli Revolutions. Great feel and great distance. The appearance of a blade at address but the forgiveness of a cavity back. Then I loved my Taylormade Burner '09s. Obviously, all down to opinions but for me its Taylormade. Great video yet again. Some really nice camera work.

Big difference was I was fitted with a better shaft not available if I ordered them direct. Would love to see you review these if you get a chance. I was shocked how much they outperformed the major brands for me.

Ben Hogan's iron designs the last 4-5 years HAVE been stunning. Interest in the US has been such that one of the premier national club fitters, Club Champion, is now carrying them as standard product (along with the big names Titleist, Mizuno, Srixon, Taylormade, etc.). Don't think I could handle these Icon blades, but the PTx Pros, with the cavity back help, may be the right fit. Thanks again for keeping everyone in the game...
Most likely they set it up with the course beforehand and the course is more than happy for the free advertisement from Rick's video. "Hey open late to give us an hour or two alone to film this video and we will give you 500k - 1m free views of advertising".

I’ve got a set of Hogan Apex II irons which I bought in the 80s and they really are beauties. They’re a legendary set and I’ve done well with them over the years. So I’m so glad they’re still being made.
I've always wanted to try out those clubs. I'm only a 15 handicap and I use cavity back type iron but... all of the golfers/youtubers that have tested these clubs have said the exact same things that you're saying, especially about the feel. Thanks Mate.

Check out the old Bridgestone j33 I just switched from blades to these I love them got a 3-pw for less than $150 used way more forgiving on the toe shots and you can still put a lot of shape on the shots. Super underrated clubs

How could anyone possibly dislike a rick shiels video, another great one rick.
How come you are often “alone”. I never see other people playing at other holes?
I was thinking the same thing. I hardly ever see other golfers.
Most likely they set it up with the course beforehand and the course is more than happy for the free advertisement from Rick's video. "Hey open late to give us an hour or two alone to film this video and we will give you 500k - 1m free views of advertising".

Dang. I know their site says they were closed for six weeks, and they’re trying to catch up. I’ve been seriously considering getting a whole set of Ben Hogan clubs for a couple months now.
It’s worth the wait. Mine arrived in May. Unreal!!
Mine took about 7 weeks to come in. Totally worth it. Love em to death.

I’ve got a set of Hogan Apex II irons which I bought in the 80s and they really are beauties. They’re a legendary set and I’ve done well with them over the years.
So I’m so glad they’re still being made.

I've always wanted to try out those clubs. I'm only a 15 handicap and I use cavity back type iron but... all of the golfers/youtubers that have tested these clubs have said the exact same things that you're saying, especially about the feel. Thanks Mate.

THANK YOU for testing these! I love blades but at my current handicap cannot effectively play them. I actually have the edge irons and love them! I wish they were tested by the big reviewers such as yourself. This review got me on the practice range today and I thank you for the motivation!

I have the equalizer wedges in black and been gaming them since January. They are the most durable black wedges I have used to date.

Check out the old Bridgestone j33 I just switched from blades to these I love them got a 3-pw for less than $150 used way more forgiving on the toe shots and you can still put a lot of shape on the shots. Super underrated clubs

Nice. I used to play the FTX combo set. Still have them as spares. They still offer a combo set with the Icon irons PW-8i and PTx PRO Irons 7i-5/4i.
I just recently starting gaming the PTXpros and love them first time using cavity backs and loving them, dont think I could game blades. Wish I got the black they look mean. Great video Rick!
You still liking the ptx pro? Do you have the black finish if so how they holding up ?
@@suprand I don't have the black finish unfortunately. And still loving them gone from an 11 handicap down to an 8.3 now that's not all on the clubs I have just been playing a lot more. But still love the clubs.

They look so good new... I had black irons before though and after a few trips to fairway bunkers, they scratch right up!
