- Butter commercials in the early 1980's were fairly routine affairs usually depicting a housewife and the preparation of a sandwich. That all ended when Aardman animated butter-man Douglas came along in 1986.
Check out virtually all of his on-screen appearances (excepting the full versions of 3 of the very-rare Olympics 1992 series), right from the early musical numbers, through to the Penelope Keith narrated ones from the mid-nineties/early noughties.
The audio has been cleaned up where possible and there's even a couple of adverts here that you'll struggle to find elsewhere.
I'm from a little south american country called Chile and yesterday i went to my local fleamarket and i found a mug with this little guy on it, i thought he looked kind of funny so i bought it and i'm drinking tea out of it right now as i'm googling about the brand and getting to see the ads. It's such a weird but fascinating experience, i love my little lurpak guy mug even more now ❤
This is great to hear!

Love the one where he pulls out the cello at the end but she puts the glass over him 🤣🤣 BRING BACK DOUGLAS
I loved the original advert when I was 6-7 and I really thought Douglas was made from Lurpak.. I even wanted to make him myself when I we had Lurpak in the fridge and imagine the disappointment when my mum and dad told me he wasn't really made from Lurpak!
Hope you ended up making Douglas in the end
They did make a soft toy of him.
@@eleanorhogan8643 I don't remember the soft toy, I think this was later on when I was older
@@Matt571 Possibly
I just love that throughout most the commercials Douglas is just being an annoying little bastard and I love it lol!😂😂😂😂
and this is why i love aardman animations
Same.
Why does this advert make me smile so much 😂🤟
Charlotte Slater because ur silly
Its funny as fuck and we remember it when we came home from school and sat infront of the telly 😂😂😂 good times eh
Childhood memories?
I like the way that Douglas started off singing before he played the trombone
fun fact: Douglas wasn't the character's original name during production at Aardman, it was "Larry Lurpack"
Joe Taylor why lie
Joe Taylor Wow 😮
Why did they change it to Douglas
Pretty sure Douglas sounded more homey.
very enlightening, good chap
Just bought the butter dish. Tenner from eBay and so happy. Have the toast rack! Loved these adverts as a kid and loved Morph on Take Heart. From this to Creature Comforts and the hilarious Brazilian Puma and then the wonderful Grand day out.
Aardman productions. Can't imagine my childhood without them
And the wonderful Penelope Keith as the voice over 😍 just fab
Erm, is anyone else seeing a man made of butter playing the trombone? Thank god. I thought I was on drugs...
wallace's buttery brothers
I only really remember the Penelope Keith ads with Douglas and his trombone and even buy it occasionally though I prefer Clover or Flora
Fun fact: When I was younger my Uncle told me he was the Lurpak man and I used to believe him
Aaaw that's so PRECIOUS!!!!😭😭😭💕💕💕
My grandmother also always use to tell me she was a Good Witch when I was a child and I always believed her too.
Watching this whilst spreading lurpak on my toast 👍🏻
Thanks for existing and giving us the amazing visual entertainment you give us, aardman
Still got my Douglas butter dish and toast rack
Butter-man Douglas seems like he'd be the guy who brought Wallace his Lurpak in the Wallace and Gromit films and cartoons, since wallace liked cheese spread so much
I'm only here because of May.
I love his trombone design from 1990s to 2003 and the Olympics one
I'm here because Robbie Collin said the lead in The Titan looks like Douglas by the end of the film. I'm crying laughing.
These are Animated by Aardman Animations, the studio that made Wallace and Gromit + Shaun the sheep
Aardman company did sooooo many classics in the 70's, 80's/90's, not saying they dont do any now but nowhere near much!
1986 advert came out when I was 4/5, and same year they did the classic music video for: Peter Gabriel-Sledgehammer as you know!
douglas really said "bros before hoes"
2:48 Vic Reeves' voice!😁😁😁
Douglas scared the living shit out of me as a child
My dad made this no swere or else
How?
Douglas is far from scary
and besides I think Douglas is HILARIOUS!!!!
and beside you were just being a pussy!
Me too! I'm glad I'm not the only one 😂😂😂
I don't fucking understand how he would SCARE the living shit out of you, he's just a funny harmless cute cartoon character who likes to blow his trumpet, either your too cowardly or you must have some SERIOUS paranoia.
Anton Rodgers voicing first ad but end ones is Penelope Keith.
Cheese gromit cheese
Butter Gromit butter!
James May brought me here.
The thumbnail is legit Wallace himself
I am not a brand snob, but I have never found anything that comes even close. I will never use anything else. Spreadable for convenience, although blended, is still the best.
President is very rich & flavourful too. Was horrifically expensive for a while then suddenly the price was halved.
4:01 aww good job Douglass
I can't believe it's Lurpak Butter...
Back when I was a child I always couldn't stop laughing at 6:05 💀
Found these adverts from the creepy ads and psas list but to be fair this has nothing scary or creepy at all. If all its actually kinda cute.
I’ve always preferred lurpak to anything else. Just tastes better imo
Lurpak is bloody expensive now
What's that bit he sings after "Lurpak's not a yellow butter"? I never got that
Good question and it's certainly not obvious. I've always thought it was "It's a lighter hue" as it is lighter shade in colour than a yellow butter
WilmsterUK Thanks, I can sleep now for the first time in 20 years lol
Might I ask where you got those new Olympics ads from?
One of them was from the Douglas VHS that came out in 1994 which I had converted to digital. I then did a bit of audio trickery to remove a voiceover and clean up the mono sound. I also digitally extended the end of advert so it didn't cut off abruptly like the VHS. The other full was one was found by typing '1992 adverts' in to TH-cam and manually hunting through hours of video waiting to strike it lucky which I did on one occasion.
Do you have the original tape and can you fully upload it?
Sorry I converted it years ago (it was called Douglas Caught On Video if you fancy popping on eBay) and stripped out the linking material. The full video used to be on YT but it doesn't seem to be anymore - you can see a snippet here: th-cam.com/video/_T39gh6SkVM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks anyway
Also, could I have the link to the 1992 adverts video so I can directly copy the ad into its own upload on my archive channel?
I never even had Lurpak. The butter we use it Blue Bonnet. No offense, Lurpak.

What's the BG music playing in the Penelope Keith commercials, i really like it
the hanglider commercial reminds me of the housemartins.
The motorbike one was from 1990
Anyone know as to what doo-wop song (if any) they’re parodying in ads #2 & 3?
Personally I think that particular song is just a generalism of the era, rather than a direct ape. They made quite a point (on the Douglas VHS) of pointing out that the next advert was directly referencing 'The Leader Of The Pack', but didn't make any suggestion on the music for ads 2 and 3.
@@WilmsterUK I figured it was a general pastiche rather than an adaptation because I would have likely recognized the melody if they were parodying a specific song. Thanks for clarifying.
He reminds me of morph
Is that Peter Skellern?
I think so, yes
If you closely at the cable socket that means their in the USA
@0.57 is a 3 pin British socket.
