    Growing up in the 70’s our Baptist church had a missionary in Rhodesia. The horror stories of what the Communist-trained guerrilla’s did to the average villager was Stygian; there were also stories told about the Simba atrocities in the Congo that made their way back to us through Christian missions in the Congo, Rhodesia and SA. Hoare’s success in saving African villagers, Belgians and missionaries from certain (almost absolute) death are well known within Protestant and Catholic church circles. When “Mad Mike” passed away I’m sure he met up with many of those he saved. Chris, your book is on order! All the best.

      @@madmikehoare4978 personally I don't like China but as a Kenyan i can assure you their is nothing such as Chinese colonialism or siezed property,
      We just want development but you can't become developed without industrialising and you can't industrialise without railways and ports to facilitate movement and foreign trade, the problem is those projects are capital intensive projects we are unfortunately poor so using tax revenue is impossible, our president asked loans from HSBC but the UK government keeps on advising us to continue practicing neo-liberalism and just specialise at what we are good at (tea, coffee, tourism and horticulture) it's been 50 years and we are still underdeveloped by following these ill-advises it's really disturbing when you realise we were once richer than Indonesia and Malaysia but now they are way ahead, we all know UK is preaching nonsense to us they never became a superpower by remaining an agrarian society they industrialised, peasant farmers stopped being the food producers and farms were turned into large scale commercial farms, the displaced peasants migrated to cities and labour in factories and that's what we want for Kenya poor small scale farmers to become factory workers and land consolidation into commercial farms, inturn upgrading Kenya from a poor agrarian society to a middle class newly industrialised country and that's where China comes in the picture they basically understand what we want.

    I have a friend called Charles Van Oppen. He told me all about his uncle, Hugh, who was the man chosen by Mike to take over command of 5 Commando. Charles gave me a copy of Hugh's biography and it was fascinating: How he came to end up in 5 Commando was due to a series of chaotic events in his life; some of his own making and some because he was the right man but often in the wrong time and place. By all accounts Hugh would have carried on running 5 Commando in the style Mike had established but he was murdered by those ambitious psychopaths that mercenary work attracted in 1966.

    My brother in law served 22 years in the Royal Marines, then spent some time protecting ships from pirates in the private sector. He doesn't talk about it, when he does its just bits and pieces every now and then. One thing he told me was Hollywood shows mercenaries as big muscular man but in reality their just ordinary man with a military background, you could bump into them in a supermarket and have no clue what they do for a living.

    Chris, I had read a number of your fathers books as a teenager and was captivated by this odd-ball Irishman wandering around Africa in the 60’s as a mercenary leader having read about his adventures throughout Africa and on lake Tanganyika and all sorts! Did he ever speak much about his Irish lineage to you at all? Not too many people know of him here at all! Fantastic video by the way.

    • @madmikehoare4978
      @madmikehoare4978  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      One answer is he spoke of being Irish when it suited him. The fuller picture is he was born in India to Irish parents but all his schooling was in England and then he joined the British Army so he spoke like an Englishman and behaved like a British Army officer. And then he emigrated to South Africa for 40 years. It seems clear to me he had typical Irish fighting spirit, was sentimental, had a great sense of humour, could be contrary and so on, which are generally viewed as being Irish ways. He dubbed his men the Wild Geese, after Irish soldiers, which you could say is sentimental.

    Flew from.Joburg,via Salisbury today's Harare on to Kamina Air Base,in Katanga,after basic training, we where flown by C130 to Bunia,( Oriental province) the Col. Ordered us to march from the airport,( led by an old soldier playing the bag pipes) to our billets. More training followed, followed by deployment to close the borders,of Uganda,and Sudan, and an attempt to stop more weapons and rebels ( Simba) to enter the Congo.That was indeed archived,with the capture of, ( to name a few,from.memory) Paulis,Watza,Aba,Aru,Faradje,etc etc.and the termination of my 1st contract.RTU Joburg resignd for another 6 months to Albertville to prepare for Barraca, Fizi etc etc.

He and his men played a very important part in preventing the Congo from falling into communist hands. As a Cuban living in the US , I've heard many stories from older Cubans who were able , as I did to leave our country unfortunately in the hands of communism. These older Cubans went to the Congo also with the idea of fighting communism and stopping its world expansion.

    The tragedy is that what Mike Hoare did, the adventures that he had, might be impossible today.
    2:13 Why didn't he approve of people to test themselves? This is a very existentialist Nietzschean desire for becoming. To "become who you are" is the slogan of the self actualized man. And you can only do this by facing adversety willingly.
    4:24 "suggestion of another vlog" - well "Why didn't he approve of people to test themselves?" as a motivator?

    Hi Chris listening to the Congo Mercenary audiobook read by your father at the moment and loving every minute of it your father was a true modern legend in every sense of the word, what a life! Just curious as to his Irishness every obituary and even Wikipedia refers to him being an "Irish mercenary" but from research I can't find anything more were his parents Irish Catholics? Did he consider himself personally to be Irish British or south African even? Of course the wild geese label does seem to be a nod to the historical Irish mercenaries of the past. Many thanks and great to see you keeping your father's legacy alive

      Hi B, I am pretty sure Mike's parents were Irish Catholics. Definitely Irish, from Rush, just north of Dublin. He was thus of Irish blood, and had the Irish fighting spirit, sense of humour, contrariness perhaps, etc. But he was schooled entirely in England and then joined the British Army, so by the age of 26 he was pretty much British. But he traded on his Irish blood, and was certainly sentimental - he named his unit after the Wild Geese who were originally Irish mercenaries, as you say. He lived in South Africa for many decades but never became South African, as it were.

    My dad was recruited by Mike in the 1950’s to work in the Congo, they did evil things and should not be looked on as hero’s. He was certainly there for the money - come on I have the real life story of what happened from my Dads death bed.

      Some inaccuracies here, Louise. Mike first fought in the Congo in Katanga in 1961 - and others did the recruiting. Then again in 1964 and 65, when Mike's team did the recruiting. No doubt about it, some, repeat some of the guys, a very small number, were wanton and evil killers. And after Mike left the Congo, it got worse. As I say in my book, Mike was there primarily for the political purpose he could serve, ie keeping the minerals of the Congo, especially coltan, within the Western sphere of influence. Mike was also there for the thrill of the command of tough men, the adventure and yes for the money. But by 1964 he had made a lot of money in business in South Africa, so this was not the main motivating factor for him.
