Wow, he is playing the heck out of this one. I hear the tradition all over this one, lots of Scofield but I can hear Charlie Parker and Lester Young too.
What a killin' Quartet, can't stop watching this. I had the pleasure & privilege to work w/ Sco in 2008 as a producer for a few of his shows w/ the ScoHorns in Brazil. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met. Bill Stewart's also real nice-they both got great sense of humor - watching him play drums @ close range is something else, man...
you probably dont give a damn but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Quentin Jairo thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you so much for uploading this. Been watching it all the time since I found it here on youtube! Really magnificent. Gonna buy that dvd no matter the cost (except if it is my ears, eyer or arms, cauz then I can't play music)
@kfacun Amen bro! Scofield is the living example of your statement, he can play mean old bebop as well as trippier, more electric fusion stuff too. I LOVE JAZZ, IN ALL ITS FORMS. As long as there's good players, music will be good.
Amazing !!! this is so brilliant .... does anyone know where i could get a chart or tab or any transcription for the solo ??? that would be really helpful ! please let me know
@morbels wow, I am a huge jazzman, but I can't agree more with that statement, tho I guess you're trying to make a point out of why you don't like jazz. well dude, sit back and watch over a couple of times, then you might start to get it...
I'd rather hear him play bebop than funk or jam-band stuff...but that's probably because I'm over 40. My favorite album is Herbie Hancock "Inventions and Dimensions". I guess I like it pretty cerebral.
@jkramer5 For jazz to be fully appreciated, you indeed need time to actually enjoy it. While as (good) pop music immediatly gets to the listener. I hate how some people force themselves to like jazz, because they think it will make them look more interesting or more educated. They are often bored to death listening to it. There is a good reason Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't she lovely' is a world hit, and this 'Steeplechase' isn't. And it's not because Stevie's song is an 'old piece of gum'.
yes but think of all the garbage also that are pop hit, Justin Bieber etc Similarly much smaller audiences for classical quartets as compared to rock quartets
@unsaltedqracker The problem with this is while all the guitar wankers are getting a hard on over Sco, we are losing a little of the true tradition, obviously Sco has spent some time with the oldies but every guitar player out there that keeps trying to emulate Sco's playing forgets where he came from. I have heard all forms of improvisation and I can tell which ones value, what I believe is important. It doesn't seem like Sco and I value the same things like swinging hard, and creating melody.
Another person who's definition of melody equates to "sh1Y I like". Sco is also well known and sought out for his time-feel by MANY jazz greats. Name a guitar player that swings harder than Sco! (Who knows - this guy might have gotten an education is the 7 years that have passed since! ;) )
All im saying is when it comes down to playing lines that have historical context, why is it that guitar players think they don't have to play idiomatically? Jazz is a language and sometimes in Sco's playing sounds like a kid that listened to too much 70's and 80's jazz and not enough 1950's jazz.
Bill Stewart drumming is awesome.
Wow, he is playing the heck out of this one. I hear the tradition all over this one, lots of Scofield but I can hear Charlie Parker and Lester Young too.
This is breathtaking - masterclass!

Art is self expression. It needs to grow and move forward or it ceases to exist.
1:04 Sco!
I like the way his guitar sounds nearly like a guitar and not like a synth like some of the other guys.
cool!
Wow
Amazing !!! this is so brilliant .... does anyone know where i could get a chart or tab or any transcription for the solo ??? that would be really helpful !

You damn right! This is the shit! there are also some quotes of MR Burells, Kenny's sound! Pretty traditonal to me!

that drummers hot... as in good

always though gary willis would fit in well here.
With their improvisation and understanding of harmony maybe. But the average jazzer just plays other people's music.
@unsaltedqracker The problem with this is while all the guitar wankers are getting a hard on over Sco, we are losing a little of the true tradition, obviously Sco has spent some time with the oldies but every guitar player out there that keeps trying to emulate Sco's playing forgets where he came from. The average jazz musician makes Rush and Yes look like beginners.
too true! these guys are hardly average though...
I'm a guitar player and I aint hatin on Sco but the piano player tears John and the guitar a new asshole. So jealous of the piano players two hands
All im saying is when it comes down to playing lines that have historical context, why is it that guitar players think they don't have to play idiomatically? Jazz is a language and sometimes in Sco's playing sounds like a kid that listened to too much 70's and 80's jazz and not enough 1950's jazz.
Jazz is to popmusic what Linux is to windows. Nice job, but no one is interested.
