Great informative video Paul. I have my node running down in Burleson,TX. Its listed as TX-K5ORN I will change my frequency to the 146.550 to keep it the same locally. We have two more devices that we are adding to the Mansfield and Cleburne Repeater. Thank you for the vid.
I finally got a yaesu ftm 100 last.week and learning how to use it lol. I ordered the hri 200 today so should arrive in a few days so my adventure begins
Thanks for the video. What do you consider is the proper protocol for connecting to your local node and monitoring and then changing the room? As a node owner/operator do you have the ability to limit the rooms that are available or even limit your node to only one room, so that it cannot be changed?
+Mike Bullock When I did my club presentation I simply said to consider it like any other "good amateur practice" to TX your call and ask if it is in use, if not then feel free to change rooms. However, you should always be considerate to the node owner and put the node you connected to back to the room it was on before you changed it. there are ways to block id's from connecting but not sure about blocking rooms your node is able to connect to or not. There are settings where you can block calls while in a QSO room, allow or not allow QSO connection (possibly this), TOT, and return your node to a predetermined node number.
It seems the hams who understand the info you presented have their own nodes or are already familiar with wires. For those of us who are just checking out wires, DMR, etc the info was useless as far as how to use wires-YSF...
Thanks for the comment. I made this one a while ago and is basically how to connect not the full usage of it. If you haven't found a video that explains what you're looking for yet I can make a short one explaining it, it's fairly straight forward once you're on. Of course there are some slight differences depending on the radio you're using. Let me know.
Hi, i recently had a power cut and had to reset my radio and re boot the laptop. I have the same set up as you and before the power cut I could connect to my node (HRI200, LT400 and Laptop) and when I searched it showed me things like America Link with the number of connections to the room. Now the number of connections has gone. Also, instead of larger groups at the top its just individuals. Any idea what I need to do? Rich
Rich, I apologize for not getting back sooner. I'm not really a 'youtuber' so I don't keep up on this stuff. I am not sure if I fully understand, and perhaps you have figured it out by now, but when i have power outages my issue is that I have to setup the UDP ports and static IP again OR every time Windows does an update, it takes a while for the node laptop to connect again, still not sure why this is. Sorry this probably doesn't answer your problem but I don't think I have experienced exactly what you did.
The thing I find confusing is why would Yaesu create a technology (Wires-X Node) that is essentially a base operation (Internet/PC required) and yet add the node capability only to mobile transceivers? If Yaesu wants to knock off D-Star then the node capability should be added to the FT-991A firmware and and the HRI-200 software should be released as open source so it can be run on Linux.
+RexTheDane Yes, node(room) is someone's radio/wires box setup that hosts others' connection. Currently, America Link seems to be the most popular and full. If you have your own node setup, then anyone can connect to you too.
+JeanJean if you want to run your own node then you need to buy the HRI 200 box. If you have a nearby node that someone else manages you can connect directly to theirs with your FT1D and use wires X.
To my knowledge you cannot connect to two nodes at a time. to connect to another node you just search for it and enter that node. Another operator can connect to the same node you are and have a conversation though.
I wish someone would show a demo with a radio other than the FT-2DR or FTM-400... I would like to see someone demonstrate wires-x access with a radio like the FT2980. It seems a bit complicated with its "internet" button, FRG, SRG groups... programming DTMF codes, etc..etc... I have pretty much given up until the day I get a digital radio.
Hi Paul...excellent infomative video ....magic.......just a couple of issues....and I can understand nerves come into the Video when your making them. But first and this is not your issue? ..Its great to connect to a node with any Radio / C4FM or analogue but ( Yaesu really should have made it possible with another sub routine,) once you press the Wires-X node it lists all the Nodes ACTIVE, but thats as far as it goes (If you are away from a node computer ) you never know what other stations are on the Room you connect to, Another sub routine would have been good, in that once in that room a second press of the Wires-X button (or another dedicated button pressed) A list could appear just like the room list with the stations in that room (That would have been brilliant....and maybe still possible with a firmware update?).......right that little rant out of the way........your Video .........and I spotted the deliberate mistake, (Whats my prize?? for spotting this) America Link is run by Grant N5YX in Texas and although Billy N5YSQ in Paris Texas is on quite a lot (love that guy..so straight talking) he is just a user.....and as for "Oh thats Stu in England.....A LITTLE HARD TO UNDERSTAND BUT HE'S GOT THAT BRITISH ACCENT" (Thats the Queens English!!! ) ........ha ha ....no its strange just how different your voice sounds when you hear it played back to yourself? Well hello Stu, great to hear from you on TH-cam, I monitor most the time and know that you are a staple of America Link. haha. There were some local hams who were asking about Wiresx so I made a few videos, didn't know they would be so popular, but it's always good to find an instructional video on something you're trying to learn how to use so I'm glad I could help some of my fellow hams out there. There are definately some improvements to be made on Wiresx and the good thing is that things should only get better. I'm glad they fixed the Simplex issue so that you can hear people on Simplex talking to your node. That was really irritating to me at first that I couldn't hear anybody connected to my node. I realized my error on saying Billy instead of Grant and made the correction in the video info. I have been working on my extra class license so that next time I travel to the country of the Queen I can use the radio. Thanks for the comments, see you on Wires!

If the Yaesu repeater is analog you can connect with any analog radio but if it is digital only than the Ft 60 cannot access it as it is not digital or c4fm compatible. To connect in analog as with any analog repeater you need the pl tone and offset. I hope this helps.
The 'node' is the location where there is a radio and an HRI-200 box connected to the internet. This radio can be standalone, can be the yaesu repeater, or RF connected to a repeater. That will have a frequency, tone, etc. Each HRI-200 box gets an id number, mine being 21606, it is the node that people are connecting to that create 'rooms' where hams can communicate in a group. You can go directly to any number through WiresX by simply entering that number, node or user, in your search box, but to do this you must already be connected to a node that is connected to the internet. I cannot be in the mountains and input 21606 and connect to my node because at that distance it is the internet that is connecting me, not RF, and I simply cannot reach via RF. If there was a node in those mountains, connected to the internet, and I connected to that node, I could then punch in the id number or search for and connect to the node I want to such as 21606 or search and find other nodes.
Do you have to buy the extra equipment to use the radio as is. I have a ft2800m Yeasu mobile. Do I have to have a node? Do I have to buy a hri200 gizmo? Why culdn't I just look up a node and program it in my radio. Thanks
You do not need a 'node' to connect, you only need a WiresX capable radio, currently Yaesu radios that have C4FM(if wanting digital). The node is only if you want your own node to connect to and move around rooms without using someone else's. Anywhere you have someone with a local, usable, node within RF of your C4FM radio, you can connect to the entire WiresX system. Previous comments are for digital connections, if you are near an analog WiresX node, ANY FM 2m/70cm radio can connect to that node and get on WiresX, change rooms, etc. with DTMF. And the best part is that both analog and digitally connected hams can talk to each other!
Man that is cool but I'm having trouble with the procedure on this Yaesu FT2800M. There are no real "to the point" directions in the manual or even on line that I can find. I would of course have to use FM analog with this radio. Would you happen to have any info on the programming part with this radio and thanks for the come back.
For analog, I believe you simply put in the local analog node information, ie frequency, tone, etc. That is all you should have to do to my knowledge. To utilize WiresX features once you are on, like change rooms, you use DTMF.
So, the Node ID is specific to that node and doesn't have to be entered into the FM radio, only the C4FM ID so as to link the two. I think I have it now. Really appreciate your time and help, friend 73's
I am a new ham with a FTM-400. I do not have a wires x repeater from home that I can hit but I can hit a fusion repeater that has a room and a node, can I use it to get to wires x?
Certainly! That's how it works. Just connect your radio to that node and you can move in the Wires X system anywhere you want, node to node, and talk to anyone on WiresX.
It is not needed, and to my knowledge you can only see the gps distance if you are in digital mode. For my node I can use the radio GPS or manually input my coordinates in the software.
Thanks for the video, Paul. First, I'm pretty much a ham dummy so forgive me if I ask a stupid question. Last night I was flipping through the dial on my FT-2900 in my truck and heard some folks on wires-x. I was surprised at how far away they were. So, how was it I could hear them without connecting to a room? Thanks, Rick kd0wbw
+Rick K Hey no problem, I am still learning as I go too. If you are within RF range of a radio on Wires-X you are going to hear that radio, simply because your radio is picking up the RF since you are in range, just as if you were talking to them radio to radio. If you are running a 2900 that means they had their node setup in Analog instead of Digital. If it were in digital you would most likely hear screeching and you would need to adjust your tone squelch I believe. This is the beauty of Wires-X, it combines both analog and digital through the system and converts. You could easily talk to that radio, as long as you had the tone settings correct to transmit, and you would be on the Wires-X system. Then, with DTMF you could change rooms, disconnect, etc. So remember, whether you are 'on' the Wires-X system or not, if you are within RF range of a radio that IS on Wires-X, running analog, you can connect with any radio. Hope this helps.
When I hold down Dx button on my ftm-400 while tuned to local fusion repeater, it attempts to connect but fails. The yaesu website shows it on active list. any idea what's wrong?
+Alan Tucson More than likely it is not linking to Wires mode on your 400 because you are not getting good enough RF return transmission from the local node to get the digital information. That would be my first guess. The node could be running low power which has a minimal digital range then.
+Paul K5VOP Thanks Paul. I've been looking into the issue a lot this weekend and I believe the issue is that the repeater is setup in analog and therefore will not allow the the digital menu system to work as designed. my understanding is the only way to access another node would be to connect manually via DTMF.
+Alan Tucson I love having my own node. The only downside in my opinion, other than using a radio for the node, is that since it is running simplex, anyone connecting simplex to my node are the only ones I cannot talk to or hear. The simplex coming in from both sources to my TX/RX radio is cancelled out I guess. I can hear them in the HRI-200 box audio but I cannot talk to them.
I'm brand new, tech privileges. I'm trying to connect with an FT-60. I see three nodes in my city, but I'm not having any luck. Any suggestions. KD9HCZ.
The nodes you are connecting to have to be analog since the FT-60 is not C4FM capable. Just like a repeater you have to have the frequency, tone and offset correctly set and then to do things you will need to use DTMF tones. I have not worked in analog much at all so for the DTMF try this guy's video th-cam.com/video/qf69arIlCYY/w-d-xo.html

It is similar to Echolink, probably more like IRLP, but much easier to setup. But you do still use RF with Wires X. It is just another method to connect around the world with very little effort. What are you confused about? Maybe I can clear it up.
+Paul K5VOP i was only joking, you explained it well. id prob need to have it in front of me so i could mess around and get it working. ive tried all the various modes just not had a crack at this one yet but i do have 2 yaesu radios.
+Glynn H Lol, okay. I tried Echolink and IRLP and when setting them up I just couldn't get them to work, and IRLP I practically need to be a programmer. Wires-x has been the simplest setup and use, for me anyway.

nice video, but I'm none the wiser lol. think I will stick to old fashion radio signals for now. seems to be similar to echolink I once had a look at
It is similar to Echolink, probably more like IRLP, but much easier to setup.
Where did get the software
The software is on yaesu website. I'm going to download it when I get a dedicated laptop.
Can a Technician do this??
LightSport Man yes, it is VHF/UHF (2m/70cm). :)
thanks...
So I need another box a computer and 2 radios That’s a bit much for me I’ll stick to hf and fm
