Good luck, Ian. The struggle is real!
You've always refered to "the" collection which is kinda vague! Sometimes what we call things affects how we think about them.
I just have a few specific things that I collect, and try not to keep anything else!

Large scale ‘collecting / hoarding’ can often have it’s basis in grief. I think you need to think what that era means to you and why you mentally might want to keep a ‘foothold’ back in that time. In a practical sense, I recommend keeping your profits from selling your items separate from your other family finances. See that ‘pot’ building up and then spend it on experiences for the whole family that you would not otherwise be able to do, and then you are creating new memories, without the guilt and baggage. Good luck with it all!

Love the content,a had the same issue a few years was collecting more than selling at one point,a changed my approach and decided on focusing on a ps1 collection, long story short started selling all my other stuff and getting more obscure ps1 stuff was basically selling 15-20 items to buy one game after about 6 months had cleared most of my collection of odds and sods and ended up with a cool ps1 collection that fits in a large box helped me alot

I get what you are saying, my family despair with me, you inspire me to have a good clear out. We had a perfectly nice pub in the garden, which turned into my workshop, a spare bedroom is my stock room, the dining room table is my photo area, the kitchen is where I pack everything. The home is in turmoil. It is supposed to be a safe relaxing place where you can de-stress at the end of the day. How can you relax when everywhere you look is a reminder of the work you need to do. There is clutter everywhere, my mind is therefore cluttered. Good shout mate, I'm going to take a leaf out of your book.

With all your items you are finding hard too let go why don’t you when selling them total the price they sell for and use it as a goal too put towards something like your attic conversion or a holiday only a thought . You could have the total in top corner bit like your good friend the Welsh pokerpicker . Once you start seeing how much you are making might set you on a roll

I think there's also a sub conscious fear or running out of stock - to have a decent backlog - 'JUST IN CASE' which feeds the need to continually buy rather than address what you've already got, I also get FOMO on finding quality items - both are signs of feeding an addiction and the thrill of the hunt.

Another excellent, thought-provoking video. I think you have to be mindful to not be too ruthless with your clear out. You don't want to be buying back collections in the future because of this phase you're going through - one all collectors go through. Keep what you really like, sell the rest. That's what I'm doing. I even let eBay decide on some things I'm 50/50 about. List it high and it it sells, it sells.

    • @MasterofPieces
      @MasterofPieces  หลายเดือนก่อน

having that sellers regret is something that I'm fearful of. To be honest though I'll be selling everything at market price so unless the prices drastically rise I'll be able to buy it back if I miss it to much (or so I keep needing to remind myself)

Some things are so expensive nowadays, unless you're finding gems cheaply which is getting harder and hard I couldn't afford a big collection. what you own ends up owning you relates to the bank balance, if you end up buying over and above then you can end up in debt and then you are working for the bank, i think nowadays that mostly relates to your house the biggest purchase in your life will be your house, it will cost you £200k and you end up working for 40 years to pay it off, if you are unhappy in your job then it can literally end up that you are just working for the bank manager every month. i wouldnt worry about a small £15K collection if you are having no problems your mortgage, there is a large amount of propaganda around today bcos they want you to buy lots of cheap stuff from china and keep the economy going - also with inflation, anything that you buy that is old is worth more money, bcos modern toys are smaller and worth more money bcos the materials cost more, also collecting has never been more important now than ever bcos with the culture wars people are actively trying to erase the past and if you sell it now, there is a genuine reality that you may never see it again, anyway thats my twopence worth, my problem has never been parting with things it has always been that i buy too much in the first place, so we are coming at the problem from different angles but certainly dont give up the collecting, just enjoy it more, whether you are collecting for your own enjoyment or for future posterity and future generations to enjoy and get enjoyment from

I had a similar issue with hoarding, my way of reducing was picking one thing to concentrate on which was vintage starwars and I sold everything else I had.
Its hard but once you realise knowone else's cares about what you own and that your hoard doesn't impress anyone it makes it a lot easier.
For me I love vintage starwars and the collection is just for me to enjoy.
If I was you maybe just keep your amazing transformers collection and take it from there.
      Take care

Love watching your videos but if you know you've a problem and you're trying to address it why on earth are you back in the charity shop buying more crap! Nothings changed you have a disease you need to list the stuff you have at home. Try this ..... don't buy anything until the car boots next year, have 6 months off from buying. How does your wife put up with this cause if it was mine she'd be long gone. You're on a sticky wicket pal but good luck!

Can't just click your fingers and the problem dissappears. It's going to take time for me to work out what to keep and let go of... I need time to change that mindst. while I do that I still need stuff to sell on ebay. We're listing 4 times the amount I source per week so finding a few items in the shops Wednesday still means the bulk of what we list is stock I already have. I have a bigger picture plan here that I'm not ready to share but it coming:)

I think the problem is the items he has in the attic and admits he never looks at again. Those in my opinion need to go. Also if its taking over your house and negatively affected your families lives it has too change also. That last point is from personal experience 😅😅
