All of this video 🙌🏻. I tried pointing out to one of the people shown in your video what he was actually endorsing after giving a step by step guide to buying fakes. He then continued to try and justify it, while also claiming he didn’t just do so. To see your stance on it, goes about it respectfully, clearly and gives genuine alternatives is fantastic, well done.

Video smacks a little bit of 'I've spent a lot of money on my kits, so everyone else should have to.' The point about worker or factory condition is splitting hairs considering nikes terrible track record with worker rights in Asia. They were accused very recently of using forced labour from Uighur Muslims. People don't have £60-£200 to spend on new/vintage kits to wear once a year at a festival or once a week at 5-a-side. Buying brand authentic kits is not some moral high road, its falling for the marketing of a brand who doesn't care about you.

I have bought plenty of “fake” or “reproduction” football shirts. I’m an AC Milan fan and bought two shirts in adult sizes that I had a a young kid; those two shirts being the 11/12 and 14/15 AC Milan home kits.
When comparing them I found that the 11/12 one was made from a cheaper material, but I’d much rather get a shirt made from a slightly cheaper material for a much cheaper price. And the fake 14/15 shirt was literally the exact same of the real one I had. The 11/12 shirt was just one outlier the had a noticeable dip in quality, and that dip isn’t even that bad, the material is just a little thinner. I’ve also got a real and fake 2020 Italy Euro home shirt, and the two are identical in terms of look, material, fit, everything.
The main reason I buy fake football shirts is for the retro stuff. I’m not spending hundred of dollars on shirts that are old and used when I can buy one that’s brand new and looks identical for a much cheaper price. If something happens to it, I can just buy another one for the same cheap price and not cry about the fact that I’ve sunk hundreds into a shirt that’s now on longer wearable in the case of a rip or a stain.
Lastly, it’s sort of ironic that you call out the legitimacy of the claim “fakes are made in the same factories as real shirts” and them claim that fake football kits are tied to foreign gang, mafia, and human trafficking rings and then refuse to elaborate. And what’s even worse than that is that you followed it up by saying that your not here to argue about the manufacturing conditions of the real shirts. Why should I pay Puma $90 for AC Milan’s new home shirt ($100+ is you want it customized) that’s by your own admission made under poor conditions, when I can pay literally a quarter of that for a replica.
I get that your a collector and all, but most people don’t collect expensive football shirts for a living like yourself, so we can’t afford to do that. I personally collect Pokémon cards and yeah, I don’t collect fake ones, but there’s a difference between a piece of cardboard that’s made to be a collector’s item, and a shirt that’s supposed to represent your love and passion for your favorite club. I’m not spending stupid amounts of money on a football shirt, because at the end of the day it’s a shirt.

Ellis’ point that the fake £20 shirt factory has worse working conditions, is false as Nikes higher sale cost doesn’t guarantee that the worker who made the shirt is getting a fair wage or that they are in suitable working conditions, it just means that Nike take a larger share of the profit while using the same practices such as underpaying workers and forcing them into poor working conditions, just like what they do over at the fake shirt factory.
Also Ellis’ point/ opinion that he doesn’t support or agree with a legit company using heinous standards to make football shirts and that “people just turn a blind eye when they’re buying a football shirt for £20 as to what they’re actually supporting” is extremely hypocritical as he constantly “turns a blind eye” when buying football shirts from company’s such as Nike that have a history of using unethical practices and exploiting workers. As I’m sure that he owns some Nike shirts from the 90s-00s, which was the height of their sweatshop controversy. But also buying a new shirt from Nike doesn’t guarantee that it has been ethically made as a quick google will show articles and reports of Nike factories having poor and unsuitable working conditions as late as 2017.

there are rumours (RUMOURS, so take with a pinch of salt) that the fakes are manufactured by off-shift employees of genuine manufacturers who want to make a little extra as a little side hustle. the reason for the differences is largely told to be due to them being off hours and therefore not getting the licensing, quality control and permission but that also could show that rumour to be rather flimsy. either way fakes being shady don't really take much away from the scummy giant corporations who practise very similar methods of cost cutting

He also says fake shirts are linked to people trafficking. I googled it and couldn't find a single scrap of evidence to support that claim. Ultimately he's a collector, he has got a dog in this fight because the more fakes that flood the market the harder it makes his job. The rest of us are bound by financial realities and can't necessarily afford the luxury of buying genuine shirts that retail for £70-£75 and will almost certainly go up next season and that's before you even think about player issue shirts.

I'm not saying fake football shirts are good but there's many points ellis missed in this video -
    1. Not everyone is from the UK or Europe in general. CFS and M&M direct is cool but worldwide shipping is just too expensive.
    2. There's currency inflation. I live in india and an authentic Jersey costs above 4000 rupees, which is way more than what the normal people can afford for a piece of clothing.
    3. We have shops which sell fake football shirts and I agree they aren't made ethically, however it gives many a people a livelihood by selling these shirts.
    4. 90% of people won't ask you if it's a real or a fake if you're wearing a jersey in the first place, the difference is miniscule and when you see you can get a brand new arsenal jersey for 600 rupees, it is much of a bargain.
I would buy an authentic if I could, however for people living in these parts of the world, it's a fever dream. Love your videos as always ellis

In India they only sell replica jerseys at store which is not fake though. It is also officially manufactured by them. In Authentic even the logo and badge will be heat pressed and the materials are of high quality if you compare it to authentic but in replica it will be stitched in embroidery.I came across some authentic and player version jerseys at a cheaper rate in classic football shirts.uk but sadly, import tax in India alone is more than price of it. Same in the Philippines, they wont ask you if it's fake or original since football isn't popular here... They wont even know what fake and real looks like. But I'm honourable to admit my jerseys are fake but I don't mind since it's unlikely people around in real won't even know what's fake and original cuz like I said, football isn't popular here. As a collector I also would never now buy a fake shirt myself, but there was a time when I would and I completely understand it. People have already mentioned the fact of the shirts people often want aren't the ones that go for 20 quid, and I agree. Also as an Aussie, sourcing the real shirts is much harder, especially when taking into account shipping costs. Sure Nike and Adidas still sell their shirts here, but they don't offer printing services at all, and not the whole variety on offer in the UK. That new Oktoberfest Bayern kit for example. Before it sold out shipping would've been $45 (25ish pounds)... And it's physically impossible to order from Adidas UK for us. I don't think fakes should be advertised, resold and lied about, but in terms of why people buy them, I don't hold it against them.

it's definitely a discussion that is at the discretion of the customer, from a shirt collector's point of view of course the fakes are going to be a complete no, but in the case of a dad whose kids just want a half decent prem kit to wear with their mates round the court, it's different. of course you can't force people to buy fake and a real shirt is always ultimately better but everyone will have their reasons. everyone here seems to be civil though so it's good to be part of one of the more respectable corners of the football community 👏🏻

I get Man United tops from DH Gate and Soccer02, you honestly cannot tell the difference at all, they are the same material and have everything in the right places. 20 quid instead of 90 or more quid is a no brainer! If the teams stopped charging so much maybe they would get more to pay a reasonable price. I remember back in the day my dad would take me to the local sport shop and around 35 or 40 quid was all he was willing to spend and that was what they were priced as. I remember him buying me the very rare 97/98 man united blue away kit, that was the shirt, shorts and socks for 39.99! I also had Beckham 7 on the back.
Fast forward from 1997 to now... 90 quid just for the shirt! If your lucky it might have the name and number of your fave player on the back.
No one wants to pay over the odds these days so I welcome the fact such fake shirts exist. Also back in the day you would know you bought a fake because there would be either no sponsor, no kit sponsor. Sometimes you'd have to iron on the badge! Now that was very cheap, dodgy and not worth even a tenner back then.

There are outlets that sell original jerseys cheap, like I got the bayern munich and juventus jersey from previous season for just 25 usd, sometimes on eBay you find cheap jerseys, and some apps even of fb marketplace but if you want to buy the fake do it, no one is forcing u not to get it

My issue with point 3 is that unless they’re a football shirt collector, people are not going to be interested in a Dedza Dynamos away shirt. They want the shirts of the big clubs, or of the clubs they support. And then it really is tricky to find them for those sort of prices. I mean how does one get hold of an authentic Man United shirt for £20 for example. Another issue I have is with point 1. When I was younger I bought a fake Barca shirt from a street vendor in Windsor. I only got rid of that shirt when it outgrew me otherwise it was fine. Still in the same condition as when I bought it. I also have a Bayern Munich shirt bought from the Allianz itself and the lettering has noticeably faded on it. I dispute that there is always a massive gap in quality between authentic shirts and fakes.

the problem with saying 'you're supporting X Y and Z when you buy these shirts, do your research!!' is that, many many people in a position of precarity, who can't afford the real top whack shirts, either wont know this, nor will they begin to question it when they've just received what looks like the real thing, but for less than half of the price. You can't just adopt a mentality of almost looking down on the people that buy fake clothing. its like blaming the people who attend and spend money in whetherspoons... the owner is an unethical c*nt. but that doesnt mean that the people in those pubs are all unethical too. at the end of the day people that struggle to get by kind of dont get to have the luxury of perfect moral choices. the blame should be with the people and sites that produce these shirts unethically (forced labour, unhealthy labour conditions) and blame at the companies like nike and adidas who sell shirts at massively inflated costs and bleeding football fans dry.... once you start adopting a middleclass snobbishness looking down at people for buying fake clothing just because you are able to exercise the luxury of making the ethical yet more expensive purchase.... then you end up just punching downwards instead of upwards... to many of these people they just see it as a viable option to own their favourite football shirt that they where previously excluded from because of the insane prices for shirts at retail. this kind of video could have been a chance to create a discourse around the inflation of football shirt costs, how businesses have exploited fans loyalty and passion for increasing profits, or finding a way to provide football shirts to poorer families and individuals who cant afford the real thing at retail. in short, dont blame poor people for finding cheaper options... its not their fault, its the businesses....

I think you have to sort the two sets of people. As collectors it's obvious why we get real, especially when you have a genuine interest in those shirts aswell as knowing the potential resale value in future.
I tend to find people who buy fakes are fans of those clubs on the whole, they want to support they're club but are being priced out. With everything else to pay out for now its slightly understandable. Add to this, its perhaps not a main interest like it is for the rest of us.
All of that said I do have a price limit myself and there are shirts I really want that are mad out of range. There are companies who release licensed Retro replicas that I believe hold up in collections. I'd add they're also a wise decision when paying £50? Instead of £500 on the original, that most likely won't be worn. I don't think these shirts should be frowned upon in a buy it now kind of culture.
I've recently acquired an Inter Third from 19/20 off Grailed and I'm 95% sure it's real but I'll leave the 5% to the stretch test when it arrives 😉

Not being funny but there are still previous season shirts to buy. Having this seasons shirt doesn’t mean you are a better supporter. Yes clubs overprice hugely along with manufacturers. Supporting your club shouldn’t mean necessarily having all of the merch as much you might want it. I get the impulse to have this seasons shirt for the whole season but that’s how they get you. As a lower league fan I fall for it fully in the knowledge that I know I’m contributing to my club hard earned money that they need. To buy fake shirts is just a sign you don’t truly care but want to have the appearance of caring for your club when I know this might sound harsh however you are in fact just materialistic as person. Save up & wait for a season where the design you truly love comes along maybe if you can’t afford it. There are 40 weeks of football and those crap fake shirts don’t even last 4 weeks.

Also another point is that there is a living crisis going on, everything is going up and underpay is seeing fake kits go to 30 and normal tops go 80. This is a good thing if you just want the tops.

I normally agree with Ellis on a lot of things, but he’s missed the mark here. People genuinely want to rep the current season kits for the whole year but simply can’t afford €60+. I have a relative who picked up a fake jersey and he said there’s literally no difference. Sure they might not hold up so long in the wash, that’s why I’d hand wash them, but it’s certainly better than nothing. Obviously, I will buy genuine shirts if I can, but if I’m short on money but I want a shirt, I’ll go on DHGate or something.
I understand that these shirts aren’t made ethically, but neither are the real ones.
In conclusion, it’s your money. Spend it how you like.

i believe the "same factory" rumour stems from rumours in the fake trainer/sneaker marker, ive heard stories wherein factory workers use facilities to make extra money on the side, this is supposedly off-shift so it doesn't yield the same quality as the quality control or licensing is absent. this is merely rumours and i haven't looked into the actualities of it but i think that's where the rumours come from

  • @MegaDAli95

Let me put it in perspective for you from an overseas point of view. You have to pay £75 for the jersey, another exorbitant fee for the shipping, and VAT. And that team might not even be in the Champions League. Makes it even worse when you find out that these jerseys cost less than £10 to make. These clubs have deliberately priced out large sections of fans of their fanbases, and for a lot them merchandise sales aren’t even a large fraction of their revenue. So I completely get why the fake jersey market is booming, allows fans to rep their teams and without spending an arm and a leg. It’s a little bit like the piracy problem in music, film and video games. That being said, if you can afford a real jersey, then get one! But if you can’t, I don’t blame you for getting a really good fake. (Special place in hell for anyone selling fake items at the same price as originals)

  • @uheard
    @uheard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I have to agree with some of the other comments. You’ve missed the point. The market for fake shirts isn’t for serious football fans and collectors. It’s for those that want the fashion or for those that can’t afford to kit out their kids/themselves. Also the irony of asking people not to send hate to people with differing opinions before showing clips of said people to call them out. But by far the best ironic thing you said was these fake shirts are going to Africa to be given to kids that can’t afford shirts 😂🙄

      @benandrews5742 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Exactly. Fans of football clubs will buy from the club shop because the money will go straight to the club (minus the kit manufacturer fee) but obviously with fake kits the money goes to a foreign company. I don’t support PSG but I would love to have the away kit because i think it looks good. Why should I spend £80+ on a shirt of a team that I don’t actually support?

I don't own any fakes but have considered it, as for example if I want a 90s Leeds shirt with Radebe 5 on the back I'm not going to be able to get that on M&M Direct, if I can find it at all it'll be over £150. From the examples I've seen the quality is at least passable and I'm not fussed about longevity as it'll only be worn every so often. I can't argue against the ethics of buying them other than you can go down that rabbit hole for a lot of things probably and tbh most of us are happy to be willfully ignorant about it. Thoughts?
