  • You aren't just a Project Manager. You are also a Project Leader. But what have you learned about theories and models of leadership? In this video, I'll give you a primer of the Leadership Models that Project Managers Need to Know.
There are three types of leadership model:
    1. Traits models of leadership
    2. Styles models of leadership
    3. Roles models of leadership
    1. Traits models of leadership
Kouzes and Posner documented a whole load of traits that people look for in our leaders:
    Determined, Self-controlled, Imaginative, Intelligent, Supportive,
    Loyal, Straightforward, Honest, Dependable, Forward-looking,
    Cooperative, Caring, Ambitious, Courageous, Inspiring,
    Broad-minded, Competent, Mature, Fair-minded, Independent,
    2. Styles models of leadership
There are many Contingency theories and models of Situational Leadership
What is Situational Leadership? See: • What is Situational Le...
These models were developed by (among others):
    - Fiedler
    - Tannenbaum & Schmidt
    - Hersey & Blanchard
In his book, The New Leaders (geni.us/5ziIw), Daniel Goleman sets out six styles of leadership
    1. Visionary
    2. Coaching
    3. Affiliative
    4. Democratic
    5. Pace-setting
    6. Commanding
    3. Roles models of leadership
Roles models tend to be of two kinds:
    1. Transactional Leadership
    2. Transformational Leadership
What is Transformational Leadership? See: • What is Transformation...
    Transactional Leadership
John Adair's Three Circles model is a good example of a transactional leadership model. The three roles are to look after:
    o Individual
    o Team
    o Task
    To these, I add Communication.
    Transformational Leadership
James McGregor Burns did the early work on Transformational Leadership. But the best model was developed by Bernard Bass. This sets out four roles for the transformational leader.
    o Inspirational Motivation
    o Individualized Attention
    o Intellectual Stimulation
    o Idealized Influence
    Servant Leadership
Finally, for me, the prime leadership model recognizes our role as a servant to the team we lead.
You can view Servant Leadership as a role (to serve), a style (service), or a trait (serving).

I always tell this to my those who purchased my book: "When you are walking and working in a rhythmic leadership mode, you have clearer thinking and a sharpened mindset that ignites your purpose, passion, and priorities."

It's a great quote. What do you tell those of us who haven't bought your book?

Good grief. The more I watch your videos, the more the Project Manager seems like an impossible role. There's so much you need to know - you need subject matter expertise, project management expertise, change management expertise, and leadership capabilities. I don't think I've run into one PM who does all four of these well. Thanks for the video!

Bruce - like any professional role, its a matter of constantly building experience and learning new stuff. No-one goes from new entrant in the workplace to accomplished PM in one leap. I have a short paper that describes the nine steps of a PM career. You can sign-up to download it here: onlinepmcourses.com/advance-your-project-management-career/#nine
Of the four disciplines you identify, the one I would say is least important is 'subject matter expert'. As a PM, your expertise is in Project Management. That does need to include leadership and change management skills. But you harness the subject matter expertise of the experts on your team. For none of the projects I managed was I a true subject matter expert. But I did have the ability to harness the subject experts and ensure they worked together.
