- India's economic growth sped up unexpectedly in 4Q2023. Economists had forecast the pace of growth to slow, but the world's fastest-growing major economy expanded 8.4% in the three months ended December. A moderation in government spending and uneven monsoon were expected to weigh on growth. Instead, robust manufacturing and construction activity buoyed the economy. Rebecca Bundhun reports from Mumbai.

It was even more than that. You are referring to share of global gdp. That was because in that time, population decided size of GDP.
1000 years ago, India's share of global population was the highest. Therefore higher relative gdp. The keywords here are "Relative" and "share of" global gdp. Not to mention that for most of that time, it wasn't even remotely united. It was as much a country as europe.
In it's history, India was at it's most prosperous in mughal times (even becoming the largest economy in the world overtaking China). It made up more than a quarter of global gdp despite a relatively smaller population compared to China.
The British not only kept india poor and stole from it but also destroyed all the native industries and trade that thrived in mughal times.

Rent is only expensive in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore but all two of these cities have excellent connectivity to suburbs with Mumbai Local, Mumbai Metro, and Delhi Metro. Bangalore is working on connectivity to suburbs by introducing both locals and Metros. Mumbai's connectivity with the suburbs enables you to find rents for 10-15k for one bedroom and travel to your office in 30 minutes from Thane/Dombivali, don't have data about Bangalore and Delhi. You can easily pay 10k rent with a 40k job which any decent job can offer you. A growing economy will ensure more such decent jobs. Petrol will be replaced in the future with electric vehicles. There are many electric two-wheelers already being sold in India. I think that answers all of your questions.
