    Wow. Some are saying that 3-4 language speakers are still possible in India due to mutual intelligibility, etc. However just look at the fluency a reporter needs to report with.

      It's not that, if you'd know more you'd understand, understand the fact that while this may seem impressive to Americans, who have zero culture. For most Europeans this is a common occurrence since most indo European languages have a common root I.e. Latin or in this case vulgar Latin.
      It really isn't that impressive. I'm sure you too can speak in more languages apart from your mother tongue.

    • @k-l-in784
      @k-l-in784 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@user-vr5sc7zj1s I find your comment a bit rude, if not condescending, towards Americans, who I'm sure aren't all that uncultured. Also, not everyone who's impressed by this man is American, and I'm not sure why you would single them out that way.
      Indeed, I know French as a mother tongue, but I also know Chinese thanks to my origins and some classes, and I can hold my own in English. I learned German in school.
      I may not know a lot, but as an European myself, I do think for most people I know of my generation (friends and fellow countrymen), truly knowing four languages is already impressive, a great asset.
      I may be lucky that circumstances made me fluent in French and Chinese, and I've been able to work on my English with the internet. But when it comes to German, even though France is Germany's neighbour, I can't exactly say that I "know" it. Even though I had amazing German teachers, did all my homework and participated in class, I still lack the practiced fluency Philip Crowther has with I don't know which language that is supposed to be foreign to him. I do believe I've been studious enough, I had great marks and all, I knew my grammar, I can understand and speak basic German sentences, but I feel like it's not the same.
      So I find this man impressive, because he seems to really know the six languages he speaks (on TV!). You may not find this worth praising him, but for my classmates who have taken years to nail a language's accent, for me who need to practice more to converse casually with German speakers, it is awesome, and it motivates me to keep training.
      Have a good day!

    Well, if you're living in a non-Hindi speaking state of India, you'll have to speak at least 4 different languages (mother tongue, local tongue, Hindi, English).
    And most people I've met are quite fluent in them - you can't really tell which is their native one.
    [Now maybe the "Birbal trick" (of throwing water on someone in the middle of the night) might work in telling apart their mother tongue. I haven't tried it yet...]
    Point being, there's nothing impressive about speaking 4-6 different languages.
    I'd say a true polyglot (if that's what you're going for) needs mastery of at least a dozen.

For eg., a typical South Indian could easily be fluent in six languages - his / her mother tongue, maybe Kannada, and of course Hindi and English, besides Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The person may even be qualified to use them all professionally like this talented reporter. But because of the country's large population, six different people will have to do the job so that six people can earn a livelihood.
