Dúlamán is a traditional working song from the north of Ireland, made famous in the 1970s by the legendary Irish group Clannad. The word ‘dúlamán’ means ‘seaweed’, and the song references two types, one for dyeing and one that is edible. These two types of seaweed also represent two different characters in the song. This arrangement by Desmond Earley features the Irish single-headed frame drum, the bodhrán, and includes a lively refrain that repeats after each verse.
LYRICS:
Curfá
Dúlamán na binne buidhe
dúlamán a tsléibhe
dúlamán na farraige
‘s dúlamán a’ deididh
A ‘níon mhín ó
sin anall na fir shuirí
A mháthairín mhín ó
cuir na roithleáin go dtí mé
Curfá
Tá ceann buí ór
Ar an dúlamán gaelach
Tá dhá chluais mhaol
Ar an dúlamán gaelach
Curfá
Rachaimid don Iúir
Leis an dúlamán gaelach
Ceannóimid bróga daora
Ar an dúlamán maorach
Curfá
Bróga breaca dubha
Ar an dúlamán gaelach
Tá bairéad agus triús
Ar an dúlamán maorach
Curfá
Goidé a thug na tíre thú?
Arsa an dúlamán gaelach
Ag suirí le do ‘níon
Arsa an dúlamán gaelach
Curfá
Cha bhfaigheann tú mo ‘níon
Arsa an dúlamán gaelach
Bhuel fuadóidh mé liom í
Arsa an dúlamán maorach

On the Irish seaweed
There are two bare ears
On the Irish seaweed

We will go to Newry
With the Irish seaweed
We will buy expensive shoes
said the edible seaweed

There are dappled black shoes
On the Irish seaweed
There is a beret and trousers
On the edible seaweed
Chorus
What brought you to these parts?
Said the Irish seaweed
Courting with your daughter
Said the the Irish seaweed

You will not get my daughter
Said the Irish seaweed
Well I’ll abduct her

I don't think I'll ever hear a better song about seaweed
Keegerator :Lol. Have you heard any other songs avout seaweed.?
Damn straight.
This song put all the others into submission.
Ikr
Oooh that gave me a good laugh, thanks!
Sometimes I listen to songs in languages foreign to me to not focus on what’s being said, but rather the beauty with which it’s said. This is the top of my list.
The Cheese Head Peoples My man
The Cheese Head Peoples Same here!
The Cheese Head Peoples if you think this is good Irish 😂 try “mo ghille mear” by this same group ♥️ makes me proud to be Irish
It’s funny because I think that this song is about two kinds of seaweed being gathered and talking to each other.
Cristiana Laboy i’ve read that it’s a metaphor, a poor man who wants to marry a rich man’s daughter :)
Time to learn a new language on duolingo I guess
I'm working on it...man...it's rough
Irish is a beautiful language but is probably more difficult than Italian. I struggle with the Irish (Gaeilge) but I have learned heaps through Duolingo, listening to songs and generally immersing myself in the Irish culture. Make the effort coz it's worth the effort.
@@iammcwaffles5514 and hungarian 🤐
Gaeilge on duolingo has a buncj of missing audio files, so you're best off finding it in a book and practicing with native speakers online
@@iammcwaffles5514 Finnish - 300 words for dog.
Guyyysssss.
It's not just about Seaweed.
The word "Seaweed" (Dúlamán) represents the lover of the girl in the story. Irish people give each other weird nicknames related to their appearance or profession, it's just what we do.
Let me translate the first verse for you:
"A níon mhín ó, sin anall na fir a shúirí"
- My dear daughter, here come the men to woo thee
"A mhaithairín ó, cur na roithealean go dtí mé"
- Dear mother, put the wheels in motion for me (directly translated as "to me" but context changes it)
As you can see, the daughter wants to elope with the men (who are seaweed farmers in the song) and she's asking her mother to help.
Well, it turns out the daughter's father is a seaweed farmer himself, he actually owns the farm that the men are working on. So he's mighty pissed that his employees are flirting with his daughter - as a wealthy man, the owner wants his daughter to marry another wealthy man to look after her. So then there's a row, the daughter and the lover (Dúlamán) head to Nuir and Dúlamán spoils his girl with expensive shoes, and they basically have run away to be together at this point. That's as much as I can remember without referencing the exact translation.
I hope this provided a bit of context for everyone. No, it's not a song about literal seaweed, but I can understand why you'd think that!
Excellent performance from the choir, by the way!
Many thanks for the information!
@@DJK3115 Oh no problem! You're very welcome!
Thank you so much for explaining it

@@leiladekwatro3147 to you
To be fair, a lot of Irish songs are also about war, religious oppression, rebellion and tyranny.
But yeah, we also just have the normal work songs, laments , ballads and ... seaweed.
Well...if you think about history, seaweed might have been important for the Irish. Could have been a source of food or whatsoever. If you think about other cultures they tend to sing about nature and food as well.
The things the soloist chap does with his voice to make it sound like the lilt of a bagpipe is incredible Irish level 10,000! I've heard a much more percussive, harsh, straight-rhythm rendition of this piece before, and this one is very endearing and accessible. LOVE WHAT THIS CHOIR DOES. And the videography is next-level - kudos!!
somecallmetim46 I’d say the soloist’s lilt is more like a Celtic flute, but nevertheless
@@connorannable8608 I would Agree with you , it's much more flute than Bagpipe
Maybe he have some knowledge of Sean-Nós because he definitely use some elements of it.
Can it be played on bagpipes?
Irish music has a type called port béil (mouth music) which can get very fast and precise.Even sung slow this song is very up and down.
is no one going to address that the drummer literally has elvish like ears and is gracing us with music from faerie lands??
Many of us (Irish) have pointy sticky out ears like elves
Thomas Lowry can confirm
I never noticed the drummer's ears. They do have a bit of a point to them.
On the other hand, I watched the music video for "Let Her Go" by Passenger, and I'm certain the singer is an elf. 😂 th-cam.com/video/RBumgq5yVrA/w-d-xo.html

soloist looks like an actual elf. In a beautiful way. Like hes beautiful and mysterious or something but it might also have to do with his enchanting voice and the fact that I dont speak Irish.
And his cheekbones.
He's sooo gorgeous

That drummer, I would move mountains for. His soul is his music, you can feel it through his music. He was destined for this. This is no doubt my favorite version of this song.
The percussionist is just pure FIRE.
I'm not an Irish, I've never been to Ireland and I don't know much about it's history, but I have a soft spot in my soul for the Irish people, their beautiful accent and music.

Ciarán O’Donovan: you're brilliant. your voice is both earthy and ethereal.

I'm insanely impressed by the drummer
The lead guy is incredible, I'm just drawn in by him. Everyone is beautiful, but there's this magic I can't place.
He's like some ethereal elf-like being, right??
Beautiful. The Bodhrán is unreal. Pure skill.
I have been listening to this song day and night, I have not slept, the music keeps me alive. AHAHAHAHAHA TIME TO DANCE ME LADS!!!!!
I hope I never get tired of Irish, German, Scottish, and Norse folk songs like this.
I am from latin america so I had no idea this existed. TH-cam recommended me this and I’m glad it did. This is beautiful and really impressive. Their voices are amazing and there is a rythm to the whole... song? I don’t know whats the correct term, that evokes beautiful things. I want to hear more.
when a song about seaweed is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever heard....
I could listen to this wonderful group for hours!! WOW!
Dulaman is my very favorite Irish songs. Altan’s arrangement was my gateway drug.
This is a brilliant choral arrangement of Dúlamán, the singers are amazing, the Irish pronunciation seems spot on and the bodhrán is great as they always are :P I hope you do more Irish songs, or songs in Scots Gaelic or Welsh for that matter, Ireland and the British Isles have such a rich folk song tradition which deserves to be kept alive with great choirs such as yours!!
They've released an album of Irish & Scottish music.
This song is actually a Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) song from the Isle of Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland, translated into Gaelige (Irish).
@@innesmacneil so it's a Irish as all things Gaelic in Scotland came from Ireland including the word Scoti meaning someone from Ireland
@@tomoshea7230 Gaelic culture in Scotland is a mix of ancient Irish, Pictish and Nordic cultures, especially in the Western Isles as we’re actually knows as Norse-Gaels, so no you are actually wrong in your statement.
@@innesmacneil everything that the Scots like to project to the world today like the kilt ,bagpipes shinty Scots Gaelic all came from Ireland , Scotland means the land of the Irish as much as Scots don't like to admit it Scotland wouldn't be what it is today if the Irish didn't settle it from Dal Rialta

This is my go-to song when I need some seaweed inspiration.
I wish I knew how to speak Irish Gaelic. It is such a beautiful sounding language
I dont urderstand nothing but is beautiful to my ears. From Brazil.

This might be one of the only connections I have to my culture. My great-grandfather had to leave cork because of what the English were doing to us within a generation our language was lost I've been trying to learn but because I'm dyslexic it's hard I like listening to this choir because it feels like I get to hear my culture a little bit I get to hear the songs that my great-grandfather liked to sing... the English trying to completely wipe our culture out as they did for so many others
I watched "Song of the Sea" for the first time recently, and absolutely loved the jaunty little bit of this song that was sung. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this
This song is a game changer for seaweed.
I have added this to my personal music playlist.
The drummer is brilliant. And the song...don't ever lose your beautiful language.
I don’t think I have ever heard a more beautiful language
This was probably the language in which the Elves communicated ... they are constantly captivating!
Depends on the elves in question. The sidhe spoke in something like Old Irish gaelic, the fomoire communicated by thought, and the Alfs spoke a variation on Old Norse
I find it awesome that we have a desert named gulaman made from water mixed with sugar and agar a substance derived from seaweeds
I heard this first at my local classical station. All Classical out of Portland Oregon.
I love it.

Ciarán O’Donovan was beautiful as the soloist and the singers sang wonderfully. And the drummer ... . Wish I were in Ireland so I could attend one of your concerts!
Interesting to compare this to the Celtic Woman version. I always think it's cool how different arrangements can turn the same song into a very different performance
Gaelic is beautiful, but super difficult to speak because parents no longer teach their children the language. Ciarán made this song sound amazing
I've only ever heard Clannad's version, but these folks did a wonderful job. Beautiful.
In fairness, Altan do what I always thought was the best version...until I heard this. Brilliant arrangement and performance. Ciarán O'Donovan could be the next Iarla Ó Lionáird.
Wow!!! It defies words to explain how just voice and simple one bodhran can evoke the epitome of beauty in music. Outstanding

Awesome song! In Filipino, we call Jelly made from a certain seaweed, "Gulaman".
@Moses Wisdom Well that is rather random. Filipino and Irish are not in the same languagefamily, so it has to be an incident.
@@dershogun6396 There are some beautiful coincidences in linguistics. There's an Australian language in which the word for dog is "dog"!
Filipino has borrowed a lot of words from Spanish and English, so it's not impossible that this is a related word, but it's more likely a coincidence.
@@qwertyTRiGCognate of dúlamán in Welsh is gwymon, in Breton goumon, and from there into French it's goémon, used to make a jelly, carragheenan, there too. Serge Gainsbourg has a song Les goémons.
It is an amazing coincidence that the word for a seaweed that is used to make a jelly could be so close, but I can't find evidence that it had a Spanish cognate. The words I know in Spanish for this same seaweed is musgo de Irlanda, and musgo carrageen.
It is agar that's used in the Philippines though. Interesting.
