Sometimes you don't need words to tell a story.
This song is inspired from a visit to Charlottetown, P.E.I (Eastern Coast of Canada) where I walked around to the front of an old lighthouse near the water, and looked out for miles, and miles at the endless ocean. The water surrounding me was from a small Bay that stretched from the shore, through a narrow Channel, into the ocean. I took it to represent exactly 'Where I was' in my life at the time. Leaving the familiar waters, and the safety of the shore to venture out into the vast, possibilities of the ocean...
Then, once I picked up my guitar, I had the image of a new child being born into the world, as an old man lies on his deathbed, slowly taking his last few breaths. It was similar to the above concept in that an old life was about to end, as a new one began. The last part of the song is where his life vividly flashes before his eyes, and then all of a sudden - his time comes, and his heartbeat slowly fades the track out to stillness...
    Life & Death.
The Channel - The point of transition.
"There is more around us, and within us than our senses will ever allow us to perceive, and it can be heard, seen, felt, and brought to life....through the voice of art"

If he puts more soul into that guitar it'll come alive.

"Sometimes you don't need words to tell a story" so true. I never even really realized it until i heard this song. I'm a horrible singer but an ok guitar player, and this song made me realize I really don't need to know how to sing, I'll just let my guitar tell the story. But of course, i still have ALLOT to learn before I can tell that story as well as you can on that thing.

Calum Graham haha. that's a good question! I plan on telling stories of innocence. Stories that remind me of what it was like before I realized the awful truths of reality. Stories of peace, love, and humanity that seemingly lose value in today's society. Some of my influences come from artists like Bob Marley, John Lennon, Kings of Convenience, Brad Paisley, Neil Young, Zac Brown, etc. it's a wide range that now includes you Calum! You're awesome man and i'm diggin your music. I just recently heard Sunny Side Up and I really enjoyed how uplifting and fun that song sounds. Really cool, man. Phoenix Rising is a great song too. I'm so glad you taught us how to play it! lol. :) thanks Calum. I'm a huge fan bro, and I hope you keep filling the world with the great sound of your music. I'm 21 years old and have been playing guitar for almost 3 years now. I hope it's not too late for me, but i'm trying my best to learn how to play as well as you do. The technique you display is amazing. That's true talent. I hope i get there one day. haha. alright, i've written too much here. thanks for reading. One Love Calum! peace out, man.

Cherevolution1 :D It's never too late, just don't give up. Practice like crazy, and you'll get where you want to be. There isn't any way of measuring skill in musicianship, just hearing the soul in it. Those that don't hear it just aren't listening hard enough! ~ cheers

(Attn Spielberg) Calum, some composers are considered lucky to make film soundtracks... In your case, your talent is so amazing that a film maker would be lucky to create/articulate a movie around your music, somewhere at the bottom of the rockies where're you're from. When I hear your guitar, I hitchhike the NorthWest in my mind . Thank you for the many trips Spider hands.

Reading the story behind this song is really interesting because I have listened to this song many times and everytime I imagine an old man looking back and reliving moments of his life as he dies. He gets to re-experience the joys and energy of youth, the nervous excitement of his first kiss. Falling in love and spending the entirety of a life with that person through it all, easy or hard... Seeing that person die and feeling totally alone. Then comes the utter and complete inner peace from knowing it's done and that they don't have to be alone anymore.
    Beautiful piece of music man.

    Calum,
I'm on my break from my medical studies and had to give a comment to this wonderful piece of art. Your ability to portrait a picture with music to your audience is phenomenal. You are extremely gifted and I pray you will continue to spread music to the world. As a guitarist myself, your style and technique is spot on and amazing. I hope one day to be as clear, precise, and creative as you are
    Kind Regards,
    Tyler

Love this kid,, clearly has the chops, knows the rules, steps out over but just enough to push. His ear never strays too far from his mind..watch his head ! Too many go past the ear straight to the mind and get ..too "Cerebral"and loose's the soul, thus ,, those listening!! C.G. knows what pleases the ear. His ear ! and that works for Me !!

Man... The vastness of your reverb took me right back to a cave on the coast of Oregon. I'm native "Oregono" and as a kid would drive a couple hours from a town near MT Hood.. "Boring"... Goin west to! hang at the cool beach towns like...Lincoln City, Seaside and other on the dramatic Oregon Coastline. All in for explorin caves, campin and diggin razor clams. Your guitar sparked a flood of those fond recollections and You are the conduit!. We'd walk aways up into one Cave we liked the best ...why? For its amazing acoustics, of course!! I'd play my blues harp, my bro banged his sticks(like Buddy Rich!) on EVERY surface inside that dark, wet and friendly old cave. Nature's Authentic Acoustic Amp"! A 12 string guitar playin friend and a piano man with top chops , rounded it up for one... Top Shelf Jam! My brother went on ahead in '78. Sure miss him. He keeps an eye on me and it's so nice when he still, after 43 years, joins me in my dreams. Never often enough but he keeps me grounded and keepin keepin on.. So thanks Calum. Fer letting yer guitar playin story "tale-in-" mash up to mine. It always feels great to ponder great times but you let me reLIVE that precious memory IN LIVING COLOR!
    We'll be listening
    💪🤠👌.
    Peace

It has been well over a year since I originally heard this resilient piece of music. This is a song that will truly stand the tests of time. The most beautiful part of this song is that I still get the same feeling of jumping off of a cliff and having the wind picking me up by my wings, upon my transformation to a bird, and carrying me across the seas and lands of the world.

I believe that life is conserved, like energy and mass. That there is a finite amount of life possible, as human lives goes up so goes down other species life. There is a balance. Every life takes resources, every death provides resources. A lost love one makes room for a new ignition of life. All that is was and will be. Life continues. Your music really speaks to this belief and the the cyclical nature of the universe. It is pure light in a time of dark night. Thank you.

My first listen and I love your music. I feel a little Michael Hedges in it. I have a Michael Hedges story. I was camping with a friend in Big Basin State Park in California many years ago, and we camped next to a couple of guys and one of them was Michael Hedges. The four of us sat around a campfire and he planted all evening. He was booked to play a few Gigs in the area and wanted to camp out, and I was just lucky enough to be there. I hope to see you at a show some time, thanks for triggering the memory too with your excellent playing...
