I asked my wife if she wanted the squeaks fixed and she said no. I would agree. If alone in the house, you can easily tell where someone is when they walk on the floor.

❤ SNEAKY PRO TRICK... Two Tricks in One... To make the holes disappear, take saw dust (like hard wood oak for oak floors or birch from more blonde floors) and mix on a plastic old lid in a similar stain (to match the existing foot stain) and let the stain get tacky (about 10 minutes) and add Gorilla Wood Glue creating a wood paste and apply smoothly in the hole. Gorilla glue turns clear leaving primarily the stained wood repair. Some use tooth picks, which do not hold up and are the crappiest pine. You can buy oak or birch dowel rods at the home center or online to cut for saw dust. The dowels and Gorilla glue are outstanding fixes for stripped wood screws like door locks and hinges. Precut to the exact dowel size (I use 1/2” or 13 millimeter), drill, glue in place flush, wait till dry, then pre drill the dowel for the screw. I find these Minwax sticks only good on surfaces (like walls) that do not get physical friction traffic. I won’t use on floors as the saw dust trick is permanent and done well, even home sale inspector’s won’t catch it. Thumbs Up?
I can confirm this method works the best for making holes invisible. I learned this in woodshop almost 2 decades ago and i still use the trick till today.

Sweet Alembic bass in the back. That was the first thing that caught my eye. The floor is probably squeaky from all the sick ass bass lines that the homeowner was dropping throughout the years. You can definitely loosen up floorboards thumping some thick ass funk grooves on that 4-string Alembic for sure. Thanks for the video too guys. This old House keeps helping me through my old house.

@LBizKid04 I bought a repair kit similar to what he used. Got it from Lowe's. Ended up with over 30 small holes in my dining room oak floors, but at least my dog can walk the house without waking everyone up.

This is the proper repair, th-cam.com/video/ZXBz2wxw-Ac/w-d-xo.html if the squeak is caused by gap between the hardwood and subfloor. I’m not affiliated with Fix-A-Floor, but I’m a customer who benefited from the product that fixed numerous hardwood and ceramic tile squeaks in my 20 year old home.
I'm a bit worried too but he said screwheads visible, which they solved.

Wax crayons are the best thing for filling holes. Here in Michigan we use them to fix pot holes in the roads. Saves the state millions!

My house (Finland) had a false ceiling downstairs (saves on heat bills, it drops to -35c here in winter) and some 70's vinyl flooring, there was a water leak so I had to rip the vinyl up which i was going to replace anyway and what i thought was the floor it was laid on up to find the original pine wood floor underneath, the smell of 110 year old freshly sanded pine was awesome,, same with the ceiling broke through it to find the old pine ceiling and mouldings - previous owner had devastated the upstairs though and ripped the original floor out :( still trying to restore it bit by bit

I love how they stop the video on the filling the hole part I know how to fill it to match the floor and color dead on but a lot of pepole who watch the video don't know how so when u make a video u guys should show from when u drill the hole to when u fill the hole it's a no brainer to finish a video !!! Those screws are awesome. Great tip!
If you read reviews about those screws you will see they can be a nightmare. Usually in a box you get several defective ones which break off before the screw has gone all the way in, leaving a metal spike sticking out of your floor. You have to be 100% sure there isnt anything running under your floor that the screws might go through (pipes and cables), which for most people is difficult to do as you have little idea what is under there. Even where you know the location of a joist and can put the screws only there, occasionally pipes and cables will be routed through rather than between joists. If this was an upstairs room, there may be cabling for the lights in the room below under the floor for example

@David James After you remove the ceiling? Not all houses are built the same. This product is sold outside the USA whre it is common for a floor to lay on joists and the level below to have a ceiling fixed to the bottom of the joists completely enclosing the joints. Often lighting cable and even power cables and pipes will run between the floor (unseen). If they cant run with the joists between them, building regs (at least in the UK) do allow holes to be drilled through joists (there are rules about how big and where on the wood they can be). So... you could screw in to a joist dead on and go through a cable or pipe. Under floor cables often (at least on older houses) run through metal pipes to protect them from being damaged accidently, by drilling. Very old houses in the UK, where central heating was installed 40+ yrs after they were built, will often have copper pipes run though the upstairs joists during installation

I have a 1928 colonial 3 story home with no sub floor. Only squeaky tongue groove in some areas very rotten from water damage and being abandoned for 2.5 years until we acquired it at Auction in May 2019. Not sure if simply 1/2" tongue groove plywood/osb on top, or pull it all , then 3/4" base then 1/2" offset tongue and groove?? About half of the house is gutted to framework. Galv pipes were all blocked up, replaced with PEX Manifold, Roof and framing for collapse roof sections completed. Heat/AC replaced, but not the runs, still middle of the house. Electrical is a nightmare with 144 plugs, 63 lights and little breaker box. Knob & Tube / split into Romex without ground. This complex includes a enclosed patio multi-level roofed connecting house to 3 car garage, where one bay is work shop and constantly chasing raccoons out of there. What an insulation mess out there. All of it in the house was dripping wet and moldy.

At 3:09, notice the dent the metal collar put into the pine floor! This guy's floor was already very distressed so it didn't make a difference but I wouldn't try this on my birch-floored bedroom. Maybe you could steam it back to level but I wouldn't bet on it.

My second floor room is mad squeaky but I'm not sure if I can just drill down. I'm a complete amateur. Is there wood all beneath the floor and you can drill anywhere you need? or is it more like a deck where there are beams under and you need to aim for the beams when you screw it down?

Used the product and the 1/8th drill bit is, in my opinion, slightly too large. When I would drive in the screw, it would grab the joist but then nothing would have a good enough of a grab on the hard wood floor to keep it from moving. It does reduce the squeaks but is tough.
So is 3/32" bit a good replacement?
Does anyone know where to get the longer screws? It seems that most kits just come with the short screws.
If you have access to it from below (like a basement) you can usually shim the joist or use a short screw to go up. (Yes, I guess you could literally call that screwing up.)

I always just use some talc/baby powder & sweep over the creaky areas into the cracks between floor boards. Stops sqeaks most the time :)
If I do that on my house we will suffocate ... it squeaks the entire upper floor... lol

But, I love squeaky floors. I know when people are walking in my house, and I feel secure. My thing is that I wonder if a floor squeaks, is this some sign of an impending problem that costs more money. However, the feeling of security goes away when I hear the squeaks when I am alone.

Save the sawdust from the drilling. Use a small dab of carpenters glue in the pile of sawdust, fill the hole then lightly sand and stain/finish to match.

This is an old trick that works well. Melting wax works just aswell for this aplication, and it is faster.

Watching the vid, the purpose of the break away screw head is to hide the screw. My case is I'm replacing old carpet so I don't need the break away screws and using 2 1/2" screws along the Joists have not resolved the squeak. Can not access the Joists as the squeaks are on the second floor. Looks like I may need to replace the subfloor?

Wood floors are nice but I can't stand squeaky floors. This can really help reduce the aggravation caused by the noise.

That's a nice solution for a squeaky wooden floor, but what about other covered floors where it's difficult to pull up the floor covering without creating a much bigger repair job?
