Best explanation of the process I've seen! Thanks for sharing! As a designer, I actually recommend that my clients find a printer before I start designing. In my experience, different printers like their print files formatted in different ways, so it's nice to start working with their formatting in mind. The choice in paper weight and book binding can also affect the file formatting so I also recommend nailing that down before working with a designer. Local printers are some of the kindest people and love talking about what they do, so don't be afraid to reach out and meet with them! They are also a great resource to walk you through the different paper weights and finishes available and how they affect cost. When it comes to printing, the physical experience is SO important so I definitely recommend splurging for the nice stuff.
Thank you so much!! And yes that makes a lot of sense! I had to go back and fourth with my graphic designer because the format was wrong. So that's a very good advice :)
Haha amazing! I was just going to chime in with my perspective as a designer. Fun to see this comment first. Totally agree with that! A good local printer is a make or break step of the process in my opinion. I have a huge appreciation for the work they do to get a quality product in hands with the best possible colours given the files. And yeah, they’ll often go out of their way to make sure you’re on the same page. I once had an amazing experience sitting down with some of the technical staff and had them calibrate my display to their press sheets so when I was doing all that colour work on my side, I knew the colours I was seeing were going to show up on the proofs and in the book. Ah, love books! Would love to design another.
That zine looks phenomenal, and as a person who has been in publishing for more than 20 years, I can say this is an excellent guide to creating your own publications.
So I've decided to get back into photography. When I did. I kept getting recommendation's on TH-cam of this "Zine" topic. I didn't understand it until watching this video. This is such a cool idea I can do. Thank you for the video and information. Keep it up!!!
This was great to see your approach as a photographer! Love seeing people make cool stuff when they aren’t coming from a design first background! Wonderful work and thanks for sharing your process.
This is amazing, Kam - thank you for showing us the detail in creating your Zine. I have looked at Blurb as an option to create a personal photo book on family. The process (different types of paper, size selections, textures etc) can be daunting, but I think it's worthwhile to pursue. I appreciate what you've done here, and hope my final book comes out as well as yours. All the best!
Amongst most other "film photographers" here on TH-cam, your photos are very interesting and well composed. Not just Gas Stations and random shots through a bunch of people. I just watched all your videos - keep it up that way, very enjoyable. And congrats to the Zine 👏🥳
Hello! Love you video, it has everything I wanted to know. One question, how did you go about marketing your zine in order to get those sales from other countries? Thank you!
This is dope from a business standpoint I’d love to know what the quotes were for 100 copies and how much you sold your books for. This is a goal of mine to do in the future thanks for sharing.
Hey Regal! I won't share the specifics of the number because it was a deal between me and my printer but I sold my book for 25$ and made a tiny bit of profit :)
I love how informative this was, it was really good advice! I enjoyed seeing the passion you have for what you are doing so you get a subscriber and follower from me 🔥✌🏽 take care and keep up the good work!
Wow! Tellement cool! En tant que graphiste/photographe, c'est 100% les bonnes étapes à suivre pour la création d'un zine! Je suis curieuse de savoir chez qui tu as imprimé au final :P C'est super de voir des femmes qui font de la photo :) Keep it up!
New subscriber here. Amazing videos, Kam! Loving all the colors, the composition, the photos, the tips but, mostly, the relaxing way you explain everything . Thanks for that! PS: wich camera do you use to record these indoors videos? I think that's the only info that I couldn't find haha
I used to use the built in printing modules in lightroom and aperture to make photobooks for my family. Sometimes I went to Kinko’s, sometimes I used the built in printing service (apple). My family really appreciated the books. It was a lot of work! This is a more professional approach, and your results reflected that. You are a wonderful photographer and I am sure the owners of the zines are really enjoying them. Thank you for sharing the process. One question tho: What was the purpose of the pinterest step? I’m an old fogy and I didn’t understand that part of the process.
Great video on your process and I learned a lot. I'm wondering how you handled photo releases for those you photographed in public. My understanding is that in Mexico a realese is required once you publish an image.
I’m working on mine now. Did the layout myself in design software. Took five hours haha. I’m only doing digital for now because I’m on the road and not sure of a reliable print shop that offers drop shipping :/
This is such an inspiring video, thank you for this! Also, your zine looks amazing. Congratulations! I wonder: what would you say is the difference between a photo zine and a photo book?
Thanks so much! I'd say the difference is that a photo zine can be about a smaller project, where as a photo book is often time a project that took many years to accomplish :)
@@KamVachon Thanks! Yeah that makes sense. Now after watching this video, I'm planning to do a photo zine of my own and will follow all your advice :) Merci!
So i'am in process to create an architecture zine with an idea similiars to your but 10 days in São Paulo, what is getting me is the amount of pages of said zine, how many did yours have?
This is so inspiring. I enjoy creating books and slides out of my photography. I spent the entirety of last year shooting every event and holiday and then gifted books of it to my family. It was such a long process and I can't even imagine doing it on film. It's amazing you spent an entire month shooting in that medium. Your zine is gorgeous. Are you selling the pdf or are you going to print additional copies?
Thank you so much! Shooting film is very rewarding! I will not be selling a pdf or printing more copies, but I'll make more zines in the future about different projects :)
Good video, very informative. Could you give me a ball-park figure of the total cost to produce 100 books? And what are you selling them for? Just curious...
Good job. Thanks for the video, it’s very inspiring. Just as a piece of advice, it’s just my opinion but I think working a little bit more on the copy/text/story will bring a lot more value and life to your work. For instance, I believe « 30 days in a destination »sounds like the most impersonal thing yo me. I would rather look at a magazine with words that describe or suggest a little more from your feelings and interpretation of the world. Not hating, just saying. I appreciate your work, keep going !
Thank you Eric! I agree with what you said, but the reason I decided to name it 30 days in Mexico was because the photos in this zine are my first look into Mexico, it's nothing deep or incredibly personal and therefore I wanted the title to be true to that. Another ''deeper'' title could of suggested a second meaning to the story, when in reality it's all super simple. :)
