Another instance of the "sense of community" you spoke about: during the call-and-response between Kanami e Misa (the one with the crazy kick drum fills), the reason Misa looks to her right with that expression is because the boost on her pedalboard was turned on by Kanami.
You can actually see on a shot of Akane the moment when Kanami lifts her foot to press on Misa's pedals and later when she turns it off. After that, this move became a tradition on their live shows (easier to spot on the online ones).

      Not really.
As far as I know that was just the case with ‘Without Holding Back’ written to prepare Miku to play her parts in ‘Different’.
Most of their instrumentals are made to give Saiki a break or just because they love playing instrumentals.
The lore says that ‘Onset’ was internally known as Saiki’s pee break. LOL

Amazing transitions, the verses are never the same, solos that are mind-blowing but don't distract from the song and the fact that they have so much fun on stage with everyone getting to showcase their talent. Loved it, man. Here's my story. Grew up and hit the most influential age when grunge went big. Guess what happened after that? Nu-metal, bubblegum pop, and hip-hop. Then EDM and auto-tune. Everything I loved disappeared and became, almost literally, the opposite of what I admired. I'm internet literate. I tried to stay abreast of musical trends. I actually did. But I hated all the trends. You'll often hear "Oh, just listen to *BAND X* that is out of the mainstream. There's plenty of stuff for everyone." Spoiler alert: no, there isn't.
When I first heard the phrase "post-rock" in the late 90s I was excited. This was going to be a more epic form of rock with modern techniques, right? No, it was melodic self-indulgence. If I want melody, I'll go to Mozart. Thanks.
I went prog then. I'm not a musician. But everything else, even to my untrained ear was. Just. So. Boring. That was about the time I started hearing that "Band X is a lot more complicated that Nirvana." I'm sure they are. But they're not as interesting.
I couldn't tell you why prog caught me, aside from the fact that it wasn't predictable. Hey! A lot of post-rock wasn't predictable. But it was still boring AF with a pretentiousness that made even me (someone who was happy to explore the famously-pretentious genre of PROG-ROCK) cringe.
At this point, I'm like: "Welp, I guess music is dead for me. That's pretty sad. At least I tried."
This was where I sat for 17 years.
Then, a prog-rock reactor that I was subscribed to, for some reason, did Band-Maid. It saved music for me. I'm not exaggerating. I'd given up for nearly 2 decades. What you described in this video is exactly what means so much to me.
    Have a great day!

I think you've summed it up pretty well. I'm a bit older than you, and for me the gods were Cream, Hendrix, Sabbath etc. Prog actually goes back to Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc., but it certainly had its excursions into pretentiousness. Anyway, I won't say it was just Band-Maid--I love the European symphonic metal bands, but they get no oxygen in the U.S. Keep getting the word about about Band Maid and maybe we can save more souls!

One of their older songs I really like Live, but it's not on their channel is Clang Live on Vladimir Chupin's TH-cam channel, specifically from the Hamburg 2019 concert, it's refreshing as it's them playing raw without the studio post-production.

Here's a sentence for you: The way they always change things up within the song, never repeating verse structure, and use 4 or 5 different riff, break, bridge and run ideas where each one could be the bases for its own song... all wrapped around a memorable chorus and multiple solos by different members while Saiki's vocals focus the experience into a cohesive force with Miku's lyrics and backups, makes Kanami and the gang genius songwriters -- and Kanami maybe even a musical savant. Thx Wave Potter!

Congratulations on creating a most interesting and insightful analysis of the best band in the world. It really helps to have a musician's reaction to each artist. I believe Band Maid is the result of divine intervention. The given story aside you have in Kanami a composer of genius full of untapped talent suddenly partnered by band mates of huge ability who can perform her songs to the maximum effect and for all of them to come together in a seemingly ego free world where each gets a share of the limelight. Unique in every aspect. And yes, they bring happiness whenever they perform.

the most interesting band musically that i have heard in decades.they dont do the standard verse/chorus repeat.every verse is different in some way to the previous and all of the choruses have hooks to die for.kanami is an amazing composer who thinks outside of the box.2 guitar bands normally have both basically playing rythym until a solo.kanami is playing lead all the time.just subtle little melodies, nothing over the top creating a full sound.i have heard misa described as an extra guitarist just with a deeper tone.lol.its like lead bass and her technique is stunning.akane on drums is another who doesn't stick to the norm, introducing interesting fills and rythyms.her understanding with misa is almost telepathic.in a way,the 3 primary instrumentalists are like jazz musicians.free to wander while keeping it within the framework of the song.miku,i admire immensely.going from conceiving the band to her bravery in conceding that her voice wasn't powerful enough to be a full time rock vocalist and bring in a second singer and then learn guitar from scratch.she has gone from not even knowing how to hold a guitar to being a very good rythym player.she holds down the fort while the others do the free form thing and is also primary lyricist.the mouth piece for the band with an endless supply of energy and enthusiasm and she is hyper and "on" all the time.now we come to saiki who has developed into one of the best rock vocalists on the scene.not having a rock background, she struggled in the early days and eventually needed surgery on her vocal chords.fast forward to today and her technique and stage presence is through the roof.good range from low to high and all the tone and emotion to carry it acoustically as well.the harmonies with miku are incredible and they blend seamlessly.they dont do "bad"songs.there is not one single song that i dislike and i cant say that about most others.i have my favourites like anyone but have never thought ah,that one is off.with most bands on a cd,you might get 4 you love,3 are ok and you hit skip for the rest.lol..i am not a musician just a fanboy.lol but learning stuff here.i only watch reactions from singers/musicians/producers etc who can educate and show me stuff.sorry for rambling this post is way longer than id planned

There's an earlier live version of Play-2018?-that has a different intro (no rhythm solo) and punchier guitar/bass levels. It's great and worth a comparison. BM launched into the Domination (live) song you reacted to right after this-wait...you haven't reacted to Domination (live) yet? That one's really good. Check out their instrumental play thru videos they release with their Blu Rays-just the band without Saiki in a white studio room. You can clearly see what each member is doing, including Akane. They WANT you to see. I bet they want people to do and share covers. You'd love those. Their marketing and social media strategy is super smart.

From their YT channel, I'll recommend Secret Maiko Lips (Band-Maid's alter ego April Fool's band called Band-Maiko - yeah it's a banger); Daydreaming or About Us (mid-tempo soul-stealing ballads); and a personal fav Yolo (because imo it showcases Kanami's insane songwriting talent - it's a dynamic song she wrote as an instrumental prior to joining the band (the band later released three different versions of the song over the years: a Band-Maiko version, an instrumental version, and the fully vocalized MV found on their YT channel). Yolo, like Play, was originally an instrumental that Saiki liked and wanted vocals added. Enjoy!

Some European explorers are staying near a native village deep in the Amazon, and the tribe have been playing their drums the whole time. For days they've kept up the booming rhythm, until suddenly they stop.
Then the villagers start running away in a panic, fleeing into the jungle. When the confused explorers ask what's wrong, the villagers say, "BASS SOLO!"

The entire intro up to where Saiki calls out to the crowd isn't on the studio version. They wrote it for this tour. A nice bonus for the fans. =)

MISA!!! MISA!!!! MISA!!!! 🥃🥃🥃 sorry for being late. Avoid the 90F heat hear in So Cal. Yes the added intro to this song is a bit better than the 2018 Live version because of the "conversation" between Misa, Miku and Kanami with Akane filling in the gaps. An extra 30 seconds of fun watching Miku hanging in there with her B-M sisters.

You have to listen carefully to MISA, she's a genius as well on the bass, very complementary to the rythm section with Akane. I also love the way Miku and Kanami plays their guitar parts, always out of the way of each other.

Akane is trying to make Saiki laugh.
Which if you listen carefully you’ll see that she’s successful.
The Japanese play a game called Hengao where they make silly faces at each other to try to crack each other up.
On a lot of their videos you’ll see them surround Akane during the most difficult drum parts. They’re all pulling faces at her to try to get her to mess up knowing she never will.
Apparently Miku is the best at it.

There’s no guitar wankery with Kanami-san. Her solos are carefully crafted to punctuate the composition with emotion and reinforce the theme. She doesn’t jam, she doesn’t noodle; she always leaves you wanting more. Her brief but exquisite solo on Daydreaming perfectly captures the agony of yearning for a lost love. It’s over in a flash, but there’s nothing left to be said when she turns it back over to Saiki.
Among Kanami-san’s compositions, the song Wonderland might be her most doph. Check out the live version.
Both songs also preset very different styles of drumming by Akane, who always plays very musically and with great deftness. You will be further impressed by these examples.

Yes. They use in ear monitors and a click track. Akane has photos on Instagram of molds being made of her ears.
MISA might be the only one not using them. She has stated she prefers to feel her way through a piece but that was years ago. I personally think the others may have convinced her of their merits since then. Don't know for sure. Her hairstyle makes it hard to confirm.

Lead guitarist/composer Kanami purposely writes the 2nd verse different from the 1st verse. She doesn't want them to be the same. After composing the song and making the demo, she gives the demo to Akane (drums) & Misa (bass), and lets them go ham on their parts.

"Nothing really repeats in Band-Maid songs...."
If you listen to them closely enough, you'll notice some "-isms". One is that the second verse is rarely played the same way as the first verse. Another is that they like to do lots of false starts.

Band-Maid is not an “ordinal rock band”, but it’s a string-instrument ensemble, which is just like a classical chamber music, formed with the 1st guitar, the 2nd guitar, and the 3rd, “5-string” base, plus the percussion.
This way, you could look into BM more deeply… I think.
