Nightwish have a massive amount of songs over nearly 24 years. Initially stick with songs from the Wacken 2013 concert before moving onto other concerts, you will not regret it. Do Storytime, Romanticide, Song of Myself ,Ghost River from Wacken. Always do Nightwish live.

Hello @ Roguenjosh! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar..
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in front of a 82k+ people. "That's a Live Cinematic Epic", indeed.
Since this is your first Nightwish experience, I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan:
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

And to think Floor had only been with them 10 months!! When she first started she was given 48 hours to learn the set while flying from Holland to Salt Lake City to perform. 3rd lead singer for the band, all good, all very different. Marco the bassist also does lead male vocals ( brilliantly I might add). Check out Romanticide and Everdream from this concert for great duets, or their cover of Pink Floyd's High Hope's for Marco solo (better than original, personal opinion of course). Their latest album Human ll Nature is currently top 5 in about 30 countries worldwide. The keyboardist Tuomas is chief songwriter composer and is a modern day Mozart/Shakespeare combo.
And as a diehard Kiwi, I can't sign off without putting in a plug/request for Alien Weaponry, 3 teenage kids from NZ taking the thrash metal world by storm, and doing it singing in Maori!!! 55 yr old metalhead signing off for now.

As a bassist you probably want to listen to "The Poet And The Pendulum" (Wembley 2015), "Sleeping Sun" (Tampere 2015) and "7 Days To The Wolves" (Wembley). They have pretty prominent bass lines and some very interesting things going on. I don't know if you play with a pick or fingers, but for me it feels, that Marko is way underrated as a bassist (he is very good vocalist as well).

Since you're new to Nightwish, this is a perfect time to share what Steve Harris, the founder, principal composer & bassist/keyboardist of the world's all time greatest metal band IRON MAIDEN said about Tuomas Holopainen & Nightwish with their 2nd lead female vocalist Anette Olzon in 2015 before he had heard their 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" with Floor Jansen on vocals:
“When I heard [2007’s] Dark Passion Play, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Now, this is a proper fucking album.’ It’s got everything bar the kitchen sink in there. It was controversial because of the new singer Anette Olzon, but she was brilliant. No disrespect to Tarja, but Anette’s voice suited them a lot better. There’s heavy stuff, classical, even a bit of Disney - all kinds of shit in there. I think it’s one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard in my life. Then I got the next one, [2011’s] Imaginaerum. Storytime is a fantastic, instant song. The rest of the album took me a while to get into. Dark Passion Play was so good, I thought there was no way they could ever come up with an album that’s anywhere near that, but the more I got into Imaginaerum, the more I loved it. I haven’t heard the new one with Floor Jansen yet, but those two albums for me - I don’t think there’s anything else that I’ve heard out there that’s even close.”
These words from Steve Harris came form this 2015 article in "Metal Hammer" magazine: "How "Nightwish became a modern metal phenomenon" www.loudersound.com/features/how-nightwish-became-a-modern-metal-phenomenon which might be an interesting read to all of their fans.

On jan29, 2020 Steve Harris said:
"Certainly, some bands have got the talent. I think Nightwish are a great band and they're getting bigger all the time. They probably have the biggest chance of [reaching worldwide success on a level that Maiden has].
Heck of an accolade from one of the greats in music...

The main thing you will discover, if you decide to explore more Nightwish, is that they cannot be categorized like other bands. They have slow songs, folky songs, pop sounding songs, rock songs, heavy metal songs and they have standard 4 minutes songs up to 10 minutes plus epic songs, so trying to classify them is just a futile exercise in my humble opinion. If you go in with an open mind, you will find your musical universe largely expanded for the better.

You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for sharing your reaction and welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal!
Oh, if you want to see pure energy on a stage with handbanging (windmills), I can recommend Dark Chest Of Wonders for example, from the same venue (show opener here) ;)
Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor sings emotions, not words.
Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show from August 2013). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html )
For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour (in October 2013), they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark.
Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012.
The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish.
The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas.
Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues.
Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song.
Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs.
They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff.
For the next step, I can suggest listening to:
-- Storytime (or Dark Chest Of Wonders as I said) from the same Wacken 2013 live
-- for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also
-- If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019.
You just starting your journey with Nightwish, and be prepared to be surprised (and sometimes shocked) time and time again! Their music is very emotional and diverse.
Btw, Nightwish released their new album in April -- Human. :||: Nature.
Greetings from Moscow and stay safe! ;) Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel!

to the question how it would be if you're a huge Nightwish fan and are at the show:

It was such a unbelievable experience. everyone should have seen this band live. its almost like a movie that covers every single deep feeling you carry in your heart. Thx for that great reaction!

    @crabuki1273 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

"Every note is perfect." This is the second to last performance from an 18 month tour, so they are extraordinarily tight when this was recorded. Nightwish work with orchestras when they produce albums, and they take the orchestral recordings on the road via pro-tools, so they have to hit their timing perfectly or it all goes to hell. Other songs are much more loose on stage because there isn't a backing orchestral track. I've always loved how Marko and Empuu casually get out of Floor's way before the big ending.
If you're a bass player, you'd like Band-Maid, a Japanese rock band. Any of their latest live releases, as they shine live, much like Nightwish.

Here is a link to the concert with the correct speed/pitch: th-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/w-d-xo.html
There was an issue, with the blu-ray production of that live concert and that's why it's slightly off in pitch and speed in other uploads. A list of the start times is in the comments of that video.

The entire Wacken show is fantastic. It's worth mentioning that Floor (the singer) is their third singer and had only been with the band about 6 months at the time of this show and at first joined as a replacement singer when they fired the previous one in the middle of the tour, she wasn't even officially the new singer. So it's probably the first time many in the audience saw and heard her on the vocals. There's a documentary called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" that is about the time when she joined the band. and yes the title is quite litteral. Their previous singer divided the fanbase. Most seams to think she sounded good in the studio and that the two albums she was really good, but she had a much more pop/rock sound and it didn't really work live with the epic bombastic sound nightwish is known for.

Very nice to observe you at your first "Floorgasm"! 😂🤣😂
Some facts: This fabulous singer is the third singer of Nightwish, entered the Band October 2012 in mid of a worldtour (there is a very interesting documentation, "Please learn the setlist in 48h" (----> th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html ), about this situation. Floor Jansen had just recoverd from an burnout then and established herself as permanent bandmember. The band is from Finland (were Metal is much more common than in most other parts of the world), except Floor, she is Dutch.
Funfact: over years Floor was the best selling musician from the Netherlands but til an appearance in the dutch TV-format "Beste Zangers" in autumn 2019 she was nearly unknown in her home country. There she also proved that she is an amazing, outstanding versatile singer, for her fans not surprisingly, for the dutch people something like a revelation. Based on this TV success "at home" she made an immediately sold out solo tour in the Netherlands end 2019/beginning 2020.
You also should make a reaction/analysis from there bassist Marco, he is also an outstanding singer, I would suggest the live vid from "The Islander" from Tampere (----> th-cam.com/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/w-d-xo.html )
Ok - enough need for attention from me - best regards from Germany, stay safe, stay healthy!😉😉

Without putting my head on the block, I think Nightwish was if not the first band then one of the first bands in the symphonic metal genre who had this format, with a operatic lead female vocalist with operatic vocals. And if you are going to go back in time, you need to be aware of the 3 lead singers, as other commenters also has pointed out.
    1st Tarja Turunen - very operatic (1996-2005)
2nd Anette Olzon - more pop rockish (2006-2013)
3rd Floor Jansen - the swiss armyknife of singing, and the valkyrie you just watched(2013-present)

Check out Romanticide, Song of Myself, Dark Chest Of Wonders, or any other song in this show.
This song is specifically played for its theme & type, it does not show all the talents of each one necessarily that can be showcased in the other faster or heavier ones.
Possibly the wrong one to start you with if you only like high energy.

This is 70 min into their set.. Them being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the long epic multipart full production type songs like Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. Then they have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. They even have a very celtic rock sound going on in songs like E'lan or My Walden.. You chose, but the Nightwish Army loves it all..

Something to keep in mind when thinking about how they approach Ghost Love Score. The song is set to a backing track that was previously recorded. That means if they mess up the tempo even slightly, everything will start to fall apart. They basically have to play it perfectly from start to finish or the backing track will be out of sync by the end and it would sound terrible.

Nightwish has thrown the rule book away when it comes to metal bands, they defy classification, they are a class of their own. Massive sound, epic vocals, and their shows are beyond description, their shows draw you in and infiltrate every pore of your body. Their shows appeal to all the senses, and leave you wanting for more, and leave you emotional and physically satisfied but drained. You will never look at music the same after you see them live.

That was the first introduction for the second singer to the Nightwish community after a 2 year search when they let the first singer go. Nightwish in studio is much more symphonic, the orchestrations are way more prominent, but you can't go wrong live.

-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls)
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead)

For more metal sounding ones (or more metal sounding older songs from previous singers) is good idea to stay with Floor Jansen as their singer - starting from this show.

I was kind of invented by Nightwish. I've been to see them 36 times and this was late in the performance, not the first one. I was there and the feel from the audience is something unexpected,

Just subscribed, enjoyed your show very much. I highly recommend Nightwish's cover of a great Pink Floyd song : HIGH HOPES...you may even want to watch Pink' Floyd's video first, but hey, you'll love it, I get the feeling.

Nightwish invented the category of Orchestral/Symphonic Metal. Their entire set from Wacken th-cam.com/video/q9eKLPCciWw/w-d-xo.html but for full effect you REALLY REALLY need to watch this th-cam.com/video/aTAaEHiGjvU/w-d-xo.html Band was formed in 1996 with Tarja as their front vocalist. Annett was the second and had a great studio voice but couldn't carry it on tour so she was replaced by Floor Jansen who remains their current vocalist. Marco (bassist) does vocals as well and Tuomas (keboards) has written everything for the band since it was formed. Band is from Finland but Floor is from Denmark. She is also a voice coach and teacher. The epitome of theatrics during performance. She commands the attention and reactions of the crowd
