Governors general have fixed terms in office and a PM cannot ask them to step down. It’s a ceremonial position anyway so this idea that the Governor General has any real power beyond following the advice of the PM isn’t true in practice. The GG can’t just recall parliament unless it is on the advice of the PM and obviously he is not going to do that.

With respect, this expert is needlessly being ambiguous. The Governor General cannot recall the house by request of opposition leaders, against the wishes of the PM. Jagmeet Singh has zero power beyond rhetoric to oust Trudeau until at least January. Stephen Harper set a precedent for this in 2008 when he dissolved the house to explicitly prevent a confidence vote when the opposition parties formed a coalition. I think an election would be best for the country right now, but the law is the law, and Poilievre knows he's in the wrong here.
