Thank you so much for letting us share in the day! We learned a LOT! Holly even wants to do it again! We can't wait to try the birds on the grill. Thanks again!!
Didn't realize you had a choice in purchasing a rooster batch versus a hen batch. Thought purchased chicks and they grew to either. Y'all are so much more knowledgeable than you think. I admire how you work together and evaluate situations in priority and proficiency. 👍👍❤🙏
Mornin! What were those upside down cones for? Just curious. Did the kids help? I've never slaughtered a chicken. I ran over a squirrel and hit 4 deer, but that's about it. Thanks for sharing the videos. Your a great editor!
Years ago while on the farm I raised 100 broilers (breed?) that were mixed sex. The hens had to get butchered at a smaller size since they just started to get fat once they reached that 5 lb. size. The roosters I let get up to 8-10 lbs and had very little fat. I kept one until fall and he got so mean he'd chase the kids across the yard so I chopped his head off and weight him at 12 lbs. He tasted dang good. My oldest daughter still wears a scar under her chin from him.
We do Cornish Cross rooster twice a year and we found that they need more space than the hens do. Our roosters are much larger by far than the hens in that breed. We tried the red broiler and they take longer and are almost half the size smaller than Cornish Cross. Keep up the good work.
Good morning Matt and Sara ☀️. Very interesting...then again, I think the roosters are more dominate maybe that is why. Great video and on your thoughts and so good to know. Have a wonderful day 😁👍💞
We did Cornish cross, and they were rough. I would recommend red ranger, or a breed called jackies. They grow to butcher size at 11-13 weeks, and they actually do forage. Love watching you guys.
My best luck for meat birds was with a breed called Red Ranger. Not as much loss, they'd work well for you since you have room for them to forage. Oddly I had better success with roosters. I raised 50 most years they always gave me 3-5 extra. Most years only lose 1 or 2. Oh and you always get them who want chickens but don't seem to show when it's time to help
Hens, roosters can be pain grow to fast and they can be meaner to each other in my opinion. Now we didn't specifically raise meat birds, we had lots of chicken so we ate chicken. Ty for sharing your opinions and time, Blessed Days...
Good morning my amazing friends... I've only harvested roosters so far.. sizes vary on mine... I think the more dominate ones ate more than others because they're bullies 😆😆😆
I'm on week 5 on Cornish cross roosters. I've had 4 deaths and one that has leg problems out of 55.. not sure it's going to last to week 10. I've only raised heritage for meat birds.. definitely different! They are insane on how they stomple each other and their appetite is crazy. I ordered from purely poultry this go. Where did you get your birds from?
Last year we had 26 cornish no deaths....butchered @ 7weeks/3days...straight run 4lbs/6lbs....very successful 1st year....this year 28 ( 3 culled) we're @almost 4 weeks again ordered straight run but they're different, very docile all similar size I think we have all hens....going to keep them an extra week...I'd like to know how everyone feeds their meat birds...I've been using new country organics grain feed....starter 3 plus weeks grower broiler until final few days I'll do 50% craked corn....
That’s good. We are definitely partial to hens. We use whatever organic starter grower but then switch to an organic grower feed from Fresh Starts Farm (near Mora, Minnesota). He mixes it right there and grows most of it.
Hi guys! I am new to meat chickens. I bought 45 layers and Just 5 Cornish X chicks from TSC. Just to see what these meat birds are about. Harvest weight in 8week 🤔 I had to try. One chick died in the first 48hrs. a week later they were so huge compared to the layers. During the second week the biggest chick just dropped dead. So went and Bought five more! So I’m super stoked, thinking I’m gonna get these big meat birds to eat in about two months. 😊Well two more of the bigger ones just die for no apparent reason. I also had at least four smaller Cornish chicks looking weak, like their legs don’t work. but they can get up and walk to the food. Well two of the weaker ones died. I got only three left. Any advice ? am I doing something wrong. I feel like these birds need special attention. and they can’t be raised with the layers cause they just get Ran over from the smaller faster chicks🐥
Congratulations On not buying any poultry meat for a year.🎉 My wife doesn’t care for our organic grass fed beef. I could probably hang it in a reefer to bleed out real good but it gets expensive so we don’t. So it’s a little cowy 😂

No problem thanks for coming. That is awesome. I am hoping to grill one this weekend.

Thanks Patti! Always learning means always growing, right!?!?
Sara is so nice to share the camera with Matt and great job sara
😂 thanks Mr. Willie 😆
You welcome Sara and Matt
Enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing your experience with others.
Thanks and thanks for watching 😃

They are our kill cones. Yes they did😃💚. I have also hit 4 deer 😆 thanks 😊

Nice! Are your roosters aggressive? We’ve had issues with that as well as them not foraging …

Thanks we never heard of the Jackie’s. We will have to look into them. Thanks 😊
Hi guys, thanks for this video! I may have missed it, but how many weeks old were the hens when you processed them?
Thanks. They were 9 weeks.

Yes we do want to try the red rangers. That’s crazy it might have been our luck.

I agree
Just curious, what do you do with the chickens that don't make it? Can you still cut them up and use their meat?
I just dig a hole and put them in it.
A pecking order is what birds do. Rescue the under fed chicks into a different area to feed.
Good morning my amazing friends... I've only harvested roosters so far.. sizes vary on mine... I think the more dominate ones ate more than others because they're bullies 😆😆😆
Yeah I really want to see what the hens do again this fall. Dang bullies 😃
You can also ground some of the older chickens...
You guys are awesome!!
That is a good idea thanks 😊

We got them from hover hatchery. We are going to do hens this fall again. Way better experience.

You should try taking the feed away at night. Are you using a chicken tractor? If not make sure they have room to roam around to keep them moving.
Madam please make video of butchering chicken duck quail turkey dove pigeon rabbit video please 🙏🙏🙏
I will think of it
@@mattsara2802 possible to make a video??

Yeah try cooking it like wild game. Fast and pink on the in side or marinate the night before works great 👍
Those meat birds are truly the laziest things. I think if we do them we'll do hens so they move some.
Yes they are 😂
