It's been 6 years since my dad passed April 20th.
I always came to this song when I didn't know how to deal with how I felt regarding it all. My mom passed just a few weeks ago and I find myself here again.

As someone who used to be best friends with them, let me tell you, he is exaggerating what Mike actually meant to him. Mike was my best friend not Dan's. They are making a lot of money writing about his stories though.
Mike Kennedy really is a bad friend. I used to be very very very very close friends. He uses people and he really only cares about himself uses and fans for perks.... Like if you bring him food or get him into a theme park, he may talk to you for 10 minutes and for 10 minutes that he cares what you have to say. He does not. I saw it happen all the time.
Dan is a good dude though. But the social anxiety thing is an act. His dad is a multi millionaire. He didnt grow up. Mikes parents are psychiatrists. Every single one of you guys come from. These songs about hardship or other people's stories. Not theirs.
Also, dan treated all the ex girlfriends he writes about HORRIBLY. He was not good to them. They had enough, especially Jess. I was scared and im sorry was not about him being dumped. She had gotten accepted fo fashion school in NYC and he made her feel so shitty about it. Hey Jess is such a gaslight song.

This song got me fucked up. My best friend died a few months ago after he took bad drugs at a party, the same drugs had apparently killed another person a few towns over. He was 17 and I'm 18. We were never religious and I remember sitting there listening to this pastor go on and I was just thinking how it was all bullshit. I live in northern Canada and the Northern Lights were really bright that whole week.
I was walking home just now listening to the album for the first time and this song came on and I broke down crying.
The Wonder Years really know how to sucker-punch you right in the feels.

This song came out a couple months before my grandfather committed suicide. I thought it was a good song but I didn't have the connection to it that I do now. The first time I heard it after he died, I couldn't stop fucking crying. Every lyric in this song hits home, from him singing out of key, to the northern lights in a southern town (he was a new yorker who moved to dallas), to the hungry and heartless machine. I just want to thank the band for writing a song that actually means something. It's oddly comforting to be able to just sit in my emotions and cry it out for 5 minutes while listening lol. Anyway, thanks for reading.

When I was just turning 13 , my dad got shot in the head. He survived about 2 and 1/2 years after the fact , but this song always felt like it was made for me and my dad. Because with the drugs that he was doing it took his life in circumstance. My dad was everything to me , we didn’t have a home or money , but we had eachother. I would call him everyday when we lived homeless. I would tell him everything. And he was always there , in a weird sense.
My father couldnt provide a home or stability , but my father ensured that I knew I was loved.
This song makes me feel everything all over again each time. I play this song in his birthday every year and I cry. It’s been almost 11 years now.
What a misunderstood person he was. But I saw him in a whole. And I loved him AND his flaws. As a whole.
I miss you daddy … I’m forever 13 due to you leaving me behind on this earth. I love you more than you’ll ever know.

The first time I ever heard this song was at an open mic at a coffee shop by some guy with an acoustic guitar who combined it with “cardinals.” My jaw hit the floor. I googled the lyrics immediately and fell in love. “You were the northern lights in a southern town- a caustic, fleeting thing” is such a marvelously beautiful line.

Wow what a pathetic response. You think that Dan is a good person? Speaking from somebody who knows him and knows everything about him, he's fake. The bullshit anxiety that he talks about, that ain't real. Dan doesn't know real actual pain. His dad is a multi-millionaire and they are from lansdale. Why don't you look stuff up before you make such a dumb comment. Why don't you ask my friend Jess who is Dan's ex that he writes about all the time the real story. Dan treats everybody around him like crap. But he's still not as bad as Mike Kennedy.

This and Cardinals hits close to home so fucking hard. One of my best-friends took his life a couple of months ago. He was like family to me. I got a phone call about how they found his lifeless body. It was heart-breaking. I guess what's worse was when people would ask us (me and our other close friends) why he did it, and we wouldn't know how to answer. Because we never saw the signs. He never reached out. It took all of us by surprise. No one knew why he ended his life. But I listen to this song and think that regardless of whether or not I believe in an afterlife- I just hope he's in a better place now. We miss you all the time, Paulo.

I cried and it gave me goosebumps like I just walked outside in the snow without a coat on. every note, every cord strumed, every beat, every word, the emotion of this song just leaves me speechless. When it starts to when it ends no one can talk to me. and all I can do is sit there for a few moments after it ends to take it all in. The emotion is Soupy's voice is just so powerful. I feel like this song is pretty self-explanatory and it's my favorite song on the album.

Andrew Fackenthall Of course it's all a matter of personal preference but if someone says this is the most powerful song they've ever heard, I wouldn't dispute it because it really is an extremely powerful song. can you say why you don't think it is? The lyrics are very intense and musically, it has a great build up and big moments that really hit you. It might not be the most powerful song you've personally ever heard but you can't sit there and say that this is just an average boring song.

Not gonna lie, I wasn't too crazy about the song when I first heard it, but hearing it in conjunction with this video really drives home the emotional impact. I love the woman they cast in this role, she does a perfect job conveying a sense of emptiness and regret while still carrying forth a spark of hope that a better future is possible. That is ultimately what this band means to me, and I'm glad they were able to capture that feeling so well here.

Everything that Soupy and the Gang go through everyday enhances the songwriting. Something tells me this album will be a new phase in The Wonder Years. I think since the band has finished the "Upsides/Suburbia/Greatest Generation" trilogy, they've finally "grown up" (they're not 18 anymore, big whoop). But they still manage to hold their own unique style of songwriting and storytelling on a grander scale. I'm interested.

I actually went on a TWY binge two days ago. I must admit GSOI was a fun era given the times. +MichiganMikeKid, you should go listen to it, you don't know what you're missing out.
By the time of WBPF/Distances, the band not only hit a growth spurt, but a turning point (listen to "An Elegy for Baby Blue") and that set TWY on a path that allows them to inspire people. Who would guess the band that wrote "Cowboy Killers" and songs about Pirates, Ninjas, and Capn' Crunch would go on to write a solemn ballad about depression or songs about losing friends and family to drugs. It's an interesting career. It's safe to say these guys haven't made a complete disappointment of a record, and given this and "Cardinals", I got high hopes for this NCTH.

Recovery is possible, my 28 year old son has 5 years clean and is now helping other addicts recover! My 30 year old son has 3 years clean, my granddaughter got her Daddy back, my daughter got her brothers back, and thank God I got my 2 sons back! Please don’t ever stop trying, recovery is possible and unfortunately 💀 death is real. My sons also helped friends they used to use with, what a gift, life is worth living and your worth it! The only choice is to choose recovery and a better way of life. I’ll be praying for you! I’m just holding onto hope, unfortunately I lost 2 children, but I have 2 who were saved... He had a long recovery and many surgeries but ended up making a full recovery. He struggled will addiction after the accident he was unknowingly sold Carfentanil (100x stronger than Fentanyl) and passed away in his sleep. He had just graduated with a degree in robotics and got a job. He had also recently gotten back into motocross and entered a race without his parents knowing and got first both motos when he was afraid to tell his parents but when he brought home the trophies they were so proud of him for doing what he loved and how happy it made him. I hadn’t seen him in a few years due to life and growing up I was unaware of his problems with addiction and would give anything to go back and spend more time with him. Well, Soupy does it again and not only writes a beautiful and poetic song. But illustrates it in a music video with practically perfect imagery. The girl in the start of the video is writing what appears to be a suicide letter to her family and is obviously suffering from depression. She then takes that note and puts it in her book bag along with a bunch of stones. Making it look like she's going to commit suicide wearing the bookbag. But instead she chooses to throw the bookbag into the water before she jumps. Meanwhile Soupy is yelling "You can't have me". She refused to let the pharmaceutical companies and depression drown her and have her. This is so beautiful. Well done .

"I need someone to blame and I know how they blame me."
This line alone evoked so many past emotions I felt after mourning the loss of a dear friend of mine who took her own life. Occasionally when we lose someone to suicide, we tend to want to force blame onto someone to make an understanding out of something that we cannot comprehend. Sometimes, we force that blame upon ourselves, resulting in a deep feeling of regret and guilt. Questions like "what could I have done?" or "if only I had messaged her in time.." all flow through our minds when we are trying our best to cope. I feel like this entire song is something beautiful and brutally honest. No allegories or fillers, just a beautifully written song, and something that was desperately needed by myself and many others before it was released. Thank you all, your music has forever graced me with the wisdom that I'm never alone, and the strength to carry on. I love you guys, especially you, Soupy. God damn I want that beard.

If you only knew how much they all hate each other.
These guys used to be some of my best friends. Especially Kennedy. Me and my husband were thank in the lyric book for Suburbia.
Soupy didn't grow up for he grew up rich. The guys are singing about was also a very dear friend of mine. They weren't that good of friends. Sleeping feels guilty and Mike Kennedy feels guilty that they weren't really talking to him a whole lot when Mike was sick. It's a wonderful testament to Mike because I love him dearly. But soupy's been embellishing. If you was really all that set this would have been on the greatest generation.
Mike Kennedy just uses people. We went on vacation with him and his girlfriend and they expected us to pay for everything even though he probably had more money than we did.
Soupy is actually a very good person though. Matt brash is a sweetheart. Casey is quiet and sweet. Nick is better at everything than they are but he is much more humble than the rest of them. Josh is cool but he's an alcoholic.
I will never forgive my because that was somebody I looked at as a brother. And when I can no longer hook him up with certain perks while they were on tour we just started me like trash. And he does that to people. Great drummer though and I do wish him well. But these guys haven't gone through as much as they pretend that they do

Literally made me cry. The band as whole is so strong and it shines through so much here. I'm in agreement with him, this is my favorite song to date.
Thanks for never letting me down.

I regret not finding this band sooner. Ever since I found them I few weeks ago and they just so happened to be releasing new music for their new album, everything I hear just makes me love them more and more.

I just stopped to listen to this song, I have never heard of this band until Cardinals came out. Since then I have bought their discography and eagerly awaited another song and the album to come out. Hearing this song is an experience I can't explain. I feel like this is one of my favorite songs of all time. When songs come around and really make you feel.. this is one of them. I can't wait any more to hear this album.

WTF. This sounds like progressive pop-punk. This sounds like pop-punk matured up to high heavens. If songs like this don't make the haters shut their mouths I don't know what will.

Man. Seeing him today was unreal. There was so much emotion in his voice you could feel his/their pain. It was truly sad. Lots of tears were shed, especially from Soupy. He practically ran off the stage at the end of the song. This is a great song and a wonderful album.

Good song! Pills don't help. The best way to live, is to learn to live with YOURSELF! The best therapy is nature, painting, music, and love from family and friends. It gets better, believe me.

I'm very religious and I've dealed with depression/suicidal thoughts for about a decade and I lost one of my really good friends to suicide about 3 years ago and holy shit, this song, this video spoke to me. Her throwing the bag with rocks was one of the most powerful images I've ever seen and there's not a day that goes by that I wish my friend was still here, that he made the decision to throw the bag and not let it pull him down, but I know he's walking with Jesus and looking down on us. Whether you believe in a great beyond or not, if your dealing with depression, seek help, I beg you. Your loved, your needed and the world is a little less beautiful without you in it.

Been thinking about this song a ton lately. It’s always been super relevant, but current events, and memes after finally make it seem like it’s not an isolated feeling, but a societal one. I’ve cried to this song more times than I can count, but I felt a lot more alone in those feelings before this past week. I’m so glad to see people united under class consciousness, and realizing we can’t fix any of this alone.
