How to Make a Viking Shield

- This is how I made a Viking round shield out of plywood. It’s a fun project for a costume prop, a badass wall-hanging or martial arts use. Measurements and material suggestions are provided (the 14g shield boss was purchased on eBay; everything else was found in major retail stores). Special thanks to muh German friend and to the lovely model and her juicy shieldmaidens.

Why would the Vikings install high beam reflectors behind their shields? Wouldn't it distract their eyes more than their enemies?
P.S.- How do you get a Viking to drop her shield, toss some gold jewelry or something? (Just asking for several English monk friends.)

My first shield at work was a round one, about the same size as your shield. All of the others were rectangular.
It is funny, but the tactics we used in prison riot control, had their origins with the Romans and were later adopted by the Norsemen / Vikings amongst others. They wouldn't give us swords though, haha.
I like the Maiden's Blade runner eye make up, as well as her other obvious charms.
I would have thought that a strap that your arm went through and a grip fr your hand would allow you better control in a fight and stop the shield from being deflected by a blow or a charging person hitting it.
Yea there are advantages & disadvantages for both center-grip shields & strapped shields. One advantage for center-grip wood shields that I've heard is that if arrows are being shot into it and possibly penetrating several inches, you wouldn't want your arm strapped to that.
And right on, there's nuthin' like actually testing out a piece of gear in the real world. Did the prison shields work pretty well for their purpose?
@@vikingsharia I would think that the centre handled shield would move somewhat when hit by an arrow and soak up some of the arrow’s energy. Possibly the same with a sword or axe blow. It would also allow more movement with your extended arm.
A solid blow could possibly see the shield pivot in your hand the unfortunate user ending up with a mouthful of shield (and no teeth, haha).
No doubt being round, it would be more comfortable worn on your back or horseback for days on end.
For striking or pushing using the shield, the solid mount of the shield (Shoulder, elbow and handgrip) would see a lot of advantage.
Both designs have their merits and the user would choose his / her preferences.
The two types of shield I used in the prisons were a round black fibreglass one and a clear rectangular style one that had a slight curve. Both had strap and hand grips as we used them mostly pushing rioting groups and for knocking rioters off their feet
We preferred the rectangular ones mostly because they looked so much better! They had CORRECTIONS in big letter across the front and later ones had NSWCS (New South Wales Corrective Services, although we used to joke that it stood for CS Tear gas which was the mega strong gas that we used very liberally).
The rectangular shields suited our tactics better which was styled on Roman tactics, no individual heroics and showy shite, just a tight, disciplined, relentless steamroller of shields and batons (Bastards wouldn’t give us swords, Bwahahahahah!).

Have you tried making a shield with planks rather than plywood, and if so how would you compare the end results?
I haven't but if there is to be a sequel to this, it will definitely involve planks.

Did you think about staining the rawhide to give more of an aged leather look?
Actually no. But that's a good idea! What's the result like? subtle or can it darken the rawhide significantly?
