Lol, I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. That's nothing, that crusty ice/snow is actually better than driving on wet or fresh snow, traction wise. Those tires are excellent for it. The stuff that is a pain is the slushy/fresh snow, although it's fun to slide around in.
Snow tires definitely do help on icey conditions… however nothing is more important then knowing how to drive in snowy conditions. Personally never had a problem with 3 peak all seasons. Have been in some very extreme situations 3+ feet of snow. But this is a great example of when snow tires make a difference.
Absolutely correct. A bad driver with snow tires isn't going to be better than a good driver with all seasons who fully understands the hazards. Of course not driving at all is the safest bet but sometimes we have to.
Learned my lesson ended up on icy roads with my summer tires and it was by Devine intervention I didn’t slide off the mountain that day after losing complete control of the car for a couple seconds. Literally went 1-3mph down the mountain back to normal weather. Rookie mistake
Same thing happened to me with my all seasons someone was in the ditch already in an icy spot I just didn't panic and rode it out. God looked out for us both lol
After 3 seasons survived on the dunlop summer tires in Colorado I finally maned up and got some winter tires!!! Was sick of white knuckling it!! All season snow rated all season big difference. But people cant handle all season tires on a wrx in the snow I question their driving skills!!
Here in NW PA we can get 1-2 feet in an afternoon. My set-up is a set of studded Nokians on 17" OEM rims. You can climb walls with that set-up. On packed snow/ice you can drive almost normally while everyone else is sliding around. That is the biggest issue is giving everyone else a wide bearth. The good ol' boy pick-ups here are the worst. They never learn their lesson and run all terrain tires or worse mud tires in the winter. No sipes = no go. The Achilles heel is deep snow, once you are beached, its done. Enjoy the snow!!!!
An underrated element of winter tires is their temperature rating. Even with no snow at all the compound stays softer at much colder temperatures and provides more grip. I have hakka R5s and even this dry winter Minnesota is having they still make a meaningful difference day to day
I feel like back when I was a kid, we would get blizzards all the time, now we're lucky if we get one decent day of snow. But, I did take out my Manual CRV for some hooning when this storm hit here in Minnesota. 😂
Growing up in Idaho I drove rear wheel and front wheel drive cars in a manual in winter/ice. End of the day it’s about tires and being cautious. Can’t tell you how many trucks and 4x4 drove off the road cause they were too confident.
@@Gonin60 oh yea. You are correct. Missouri thinks they have good drivers during winter but it's simply untrue. Today we had like 90 calls in the surrounding St Louis area for stuck vehicles. I saw a lot of trucks on the side of the road. ☠️
Not everyone has the funds to have 2 separate sets of wheels and tires. Not to mention the hassle of switching them. It’s not like snow happens every day during the winter. All seasons are fine if you know how to drive.
Winter tires aren’t meant to make a vehicle more “fun”. They’re meant to make a vehicle safer in winter conditions, like you explained. Best A/S’s for the snow/ice/rain, that I’ve used, were the Continental DWS 06’s. They really do grip very good in winter conditions! I’ve also run Blizzacks before and they were great. Better than the DWS 06’s, but if you don’t live in crazy winters, but still have snow, and don’t need to climb hills, the DWS 06’s worked great for my MK7 GTI and E46 M3, both 6spds.
I’m North East of Indianapolis and I was using Nokian Hakkepillita snow tires on my wrx from 2017 until last year and those are amazing in snow. Now I’m on continental all seasons because I felt like it just wasn’t snowing enough or staying cold enough to justify snow tires. I can definitely tell the difference but I still feel completely fine with the all seasons. Yes it slides more and you have to brake sooner but we got about 8 inches and I still felt pretty confident. I will say I have done the Subaru Winter experience and that definitely helped build confidence with snow driving and helped me understand the car better. Some people are scared to slide and it freaks them out but you just have to be aware of what you’re doing and understand what the car needs you to do so you maintain control. I have also driven a sporty fwd car in snow on summer tires and I would not recommend anyone drive in snow on summer tires. That was actually terrifying in deep snow and you don’t get traction and can’t stop very well.
I got a killer deal on a set of Hankook I’cept Evo 2 winter tires and the difference from stock is crazy. These things are absolutely planted with a good set of tires.
Greetings from 'n hot Southern Africa Awais. Bud check at your local tire center, its usually 5 years. I had to change mine on my mini 4x4 as insurance did not cover the vehicle with tires past its life time
I moved from Maine …. Lots of snow … to Upstate New York ( Catskill region ) so disappointed at the lack of snow … that last stay got never touched my house 😫
Up in Canada here and I got the same winter tires as you. The difference between summer and winter tires is mind blowing, feels like my car is broken when I go back to grippy summer tires
i had summer tires on a va and i got stuck in a storm from wisconsin to chicago and it took hours but i made it. got blizzaks and it was a life saver. it was also way more comfortable of a ride on the '15 wrx, i didnt want to take them off haha
Absolutely love these tires on my 17's, never experienced anything comparable to them in comfort + predictability on New Brunswick roads. The WS90's take the win for my overall favorite tire on the VB currently, there're still holding strong in second season of use. Trying new Firestone firehawk AS V2's to replace dunlops come springtime.
Yea when it comes to absolute control in hard conditions I wouldn't trust an all season. For states that get a lot of snow it's a no brainer to just get snow tires.
Last year here in the Portland metro area we had a bad ice/snow storm and on my summer tires I had zero issue, I was extremely surprised especially them being cheap tires too, my car just smashed through the snow and ice 😂
Here in NC near the coast we hardly ever get snow but I do have Continental extreme contact DWS 06 on the VB. Friday forecast says its possible. Wish me luck 😁
There really good tires used these on a Kia koup fwd lol I remember guys in trucks watch me and my fwd going up snowy roads in my area there jaw was dropped as they we're currently trying to get there pickup out of there driveway lol.
We got quite a bit of snow in Indy and i drove to work in the morning with 2-3 inches of snow in my new Quatrac All seasons. They performed really well barely losing traction. I compared the specs on tirerack b/w blizzacs and Quatrac and they were pretty close 9.3 vs 9.2 for winter/snow rating. So not all All seasons underperform in snow.
I stupidly did 2 winters with UHP summer tires on my 4g Eclipse GT then got Blizzaks. Traded that car and both tires sets towards the 2022 WRX and I am running very inexpensive Petlas Snow Masters I got new off ebay this winter on the WRX and they are perfectly fine for less than $100 per tire.
I have no idea how peps get around in summers on a wrx! I had brand new Michelin x-ice snow tires last year and felt amazing in snow yet going into a corner just slightly to fast the car just went straight into a curb and screwed up a tie rod, wheel alignment and curbed my wheel bad! Learnt a good lesson that day 😅
Nothing will beat winter tires. Period. But what are your thoughts on All-Terrain or All-Weather tires? They must be significantly better than All-Season tires, no? I’m looking for a decent year-round tire. I’m thinking Falken Wildpeak Trail (All-Terrain)
I tried my all terrain at trails. They were ok as long as the snow was just powdery and not too low temp. The issue is even those tires rubber gets harder as the temp goes down.
You ever get an update on the power cuts you were getting at WOT/6500rpm? Also running winter tires out here in CO, car pulls harder on snow than anything I've ever been in. Of course, I still keep it chill around other vehicles!
I was doing some testing all today and think the Falken Wildpeak AT Trails are better imo, they instantly grip when i was braking normally and when i was doing hard stops. But in the end they are obviously All Terrains compared to Blizzaks
@@wrx_sus I actually used my AT trails two weeks ago in the snow they are ok. Deep powder they act like it's dirt but any ice and low temps they start to show their deficiencies. Still better than all seasons in deep snow.
I don't really think snow tires are absolutely necessary. I live in Ohio and have had all seasons for 10 years on my wrx. Been just fine. Maybe if your way north I can see it being necessary
