  • deserted infrastructures, cables frozen in the shadow of joy and tons of light Pacific powder.
Third part of our series on ghost resorts with Japan as the exploration ground for crows Celeste Pomerantz and Daisuke Fukasawa.
Fresh snow, just in from the Pacific Ocean. No one around. An atmosphere flirting with the great masters of Japanese photography. It could be black and white. Small trees spaced just right to be bypassed. The cry of a crow. Deep in the mountains of the Kansai region, on the main island of Honshu, Celeste and Daisuke explore places frozen in the 1990s. Alone on slopes deserted by skiers, they take advantage of exceptional snow where, just a few years earlier, a whole life was organized around ski lifts now in disrepair.
Japan is a great skiing country. Its powder is considered one of the lightest and most abundant in the world. After some strange years that witnessed a multitude of bankruptcies - obviously the subject of this third chapter - Japanese skiing has regained its former glory and can now look back on the past with the confidence of a country rooted in a centenarian ski culture. Interviews with three protagonists of the Nippon ski scene shed light on the latest developments. The frenzy of archive images contrasts with the delicacy of the mountains' new-found silence.
romantic nostalgia sets in. Mystery rises. Tea shall wait.

Beautiful film that draws attention to an ongoing challenge in the snow country areas of Japan. Many resorts that are still operating are struggling to sustain themselves and with the uncertainty of climate change, the challenges ahead look great. The answer is attracting and building new communities in these areas. A message underscored in this film. Thank you for making it!

The comment from the boss of Nozawa Onsen about the boom being just that, and we are back to normal again, sits well with me. I live in Matsumoto and get a season pass to Happo-One every year, because it's big/high enough to get snow even in a bad year and it's still pretty local. In my youth, (the nineties) I went to every ski area you could poke a stick at, and there were a few gems, but mostly it was to find a place where nobody else was going.

Skiing is no longer popular in Japan. Many resort areas and communities have seen fewer visitors and businesses shuttered. But other areas have had an influx of foreigners and new businesses, often run by foreigners. A resort in Niigata was just purchased by a Singaporean group and another nearby area is owned by Lotte, a Korean conglomerate. Niseko in Hokkaido has been booming for ten years and became the most expensive resort in Japan due to popularity with Australians and Chinese.
Japanese resorts are extremely cheap compared to those in other countries and travelers are taking notice. More resorts in Japan may die but many more will thrive.
Thank you for this beautiful video ❤

Starting to see some of this take place in Asahikawa this year. Low visitor turnout even though it’s the first full winter season since covid restrictions ended.
Some areas are completely deserted, with only a trickling of visitors. Hopefully it returns to normal.
At least I got to ski without any crowds, but can’t help but feel bad for the resorts. Lots of staff operating the facilities but barely any visitors.

The ski pass prices in Japan 150-300 USD. This is only a bit less than in the US 200-400 USD and still 3 times higher than anywhere in Europe. I think the ski industry with such prices has no chance of surviving in Japan.
