For you that don't understand You don't just pay back taxes . Step 1 is find that previous owner has actually abandon said property and owes taxes and pay those taxes . Step 2 is to continue paying taxes and step 3 is to make x amount of improvements for a set amount of years, in oklahoma it was 5 and then you will be granted the deed . In some states you may also have to live in and improve home . My father in law done this on 2 homes.
Most of the time (but not all of the time,) houses have been abandoned because they are in foreclosure or getting ready to be. The banks leave the houses sitting empty for years until they go into a state of disrepair or are ruined by vandals, so if someone can pay the back taxes and move into the house legally, then why not...The banks should be doing something with these homes instead of leaving them to sit and rot away. With all of these abandoned homes, hotels and apartment buildings in our country, the government and banks could create programs for the homeless people that want a home but can't get one to be able to move into these places. They could do sweat equity programs similar to Habitat for Humanity. It would get so many homeless off the streets and our country wouldn't be just sitting, decaying away. To me it's shameless that we have all of these abandoned places, yet so many homeless people who need homes.
Kelly I agree with u as I see it where I am, so much waste of resources houses, cars, food etc.. I saw people picking the dumpsters for food and other useful but discarded stuff..a pity
Darling, the banks ARE doing something ... and so DO estate agents ... most of the time they then claim these properties for themselves ... years ago I tried to organize a group of pensioners to claim such a property but couldn't find anyone to be interested ...
re my post above, yes I agree with you ... it is such a waste of resources but no one really wants to start paying bills on a regular bases ... as I said, I tried to organize a group of pensioners, together with myself, to actually claim such a property ... and there are lots of really good buildings out there with 4-5 bedroom 2-3 (sometimes) bathrooms and nice big kitchens but ... what the heck ... no wonder so many people from 3rd grade countries are getting rich ... they are prepared to do some work, not take any alcohol or drugs ... and then the govt/states are no longer obliged to give you owner informations ... under the guise that it is a privacy issue. No wonder so many large investment companies from overseas are able to buy Australia up, these overseas companies and individuals are actually protected because estate agents are the only one's that have access to who owned these properties as well as who buys them ... so the rich get richer and the poor get poorer ... and all this farce about the govt. doing constructive things to return Australia to Australians ... what a joke ... all this is allowed to go on until Australians, that are pensioners now, people that have worked hard to support and educate their children ... are reduced to poverty ... while foreigners are buying up this country.
"... the government and banks could create programs for the homeless people ..." When many homeless people do get into a place, they trash it so bad that it costs thousands of dollars to put it back together. Homes require maintenance, and homeless people can't/won't/don't provide that, either. I don't know what the answer is, but that isn't it.
here in the uk if you have lived in a house illegally after 15 years without any court injunctions of eviction notices you can legally apply to be the owner of said house
Edward Mcintire for your info I do know the law I work in real estate. the woman has holes in her story and has no idea what she's doing. but do yourself a favor go ahead and follow her advice and see what happens to you
Who is trespassing ? Just watch it mate, you know what they say about people that A.S.U.M.E. things ... just because I see the need to report something I have seen or been told about does not mean I cross the line for one minute.
this is exactly what it is ive tried what they are trying to aquire you have to go to auction cause every city in the country has tax aquired property auctions before permitting anybody to stepin and just pay back taxes i tried getting a lawyer to get a tax lein taken off a 20,000 square ft mansion i was agreeing to pay all back tax in the amount of 60,000 plus give two extra years in taxes the city held a silent tax aquired property auction only open to select few and sold it for 36000 when i tried to pay the tax off they never bothered posting on the property or anything just decided wow a mansion both owners died lets hit bank and screw this guy offering to clear it all up.
Now with that being said, there is a way to make some financial gains by going to your local office with the state and paying the back taxes on some of the properties. You can hold that for two years and you have to contact the owners to let them know you pay the back taxes to give them a chance to pay you the back taxes plus interest. If after two years in some states, again I stress check the Laws of your state. You can then file a claim for the property if they do not pay the back taxes in a time. Allowed by law in your state.
In Texas, it can be 3, 5, 10, or 25 years (if I remember correctly) depending on the circumstances. If you break in, you can go to jail or prison even if it is abandoned. And if at any time during that period, the owner objects to your presence, your adverse possession claims won't work. I think that it is the 10 year period the way you describe it, but if the owner is in the military on active duty, it would be the 25 year period.
@ It would be pretty difficult around here for someone to take property by adverse possession if the owner is aware of what is happening. The only person I eve know who ever actually acquired land by adverse possession was of property that the owner(s) had move away and had taken no steps to do any upkeep on the property or to sell it. They had pretty much forgotten about the property. And if they showed back up and wanted the property, he wouldn't object at all. I think that they did have to repay him for the property taxes. He even made it easy for them to find him if they came back. He would put a sign on the fence that also had his phone number. All they had to do was call hm if they came back and wanted the property.
@ Look at it this way. You don't pay your property taxes or the property is condemned because it has become dangerous and the county seizes it and sells it. If you come back and want it back, you are completely out of luck. It's no longer yours and you have no legal right to get it back. Someone acting legally takes possession of your property in hopes of a future adverse possession claim. If you come back and want it back within that time period (which can be years), you recompense them for the property taxes and maybe some of the expenses for taking care of the property and you get it back. Of course, the people in these videos don't have the foggiest idea what they are doing. Anyone legitimately pursuing an adverse possession will know that the rightful owner is going to get it back. The people in these videos are scumbags, not someone who knows what to do.
You can't simply take possession of an abandoned house, even after you pay the back taxes on it. The rightful owner has so long to repay you before the property becomes yours. You could end up spending tens of thousands of dollars to fix that dump up and still end up out on the street.
@@nickpowell6715 Not an opinion dude. That's how it works when counties sell property for back taxes. Here in Indiana, they have one year to pay what you paid plus interest. Check with your county to find out how those laws work there.
A few years ago a friend of mine contacted me and asked for my help. At the time he owned a piece of land (about 15 acres) outside of town in the country. He bought it with the intent of building a house on it but never did and was in the process of selling it. There was an old double-wide mfg'd home out on the land that had been there since the previous owners and someone had recently moved into it unbeknownst to him. The people trying to buy the property had gone out to look at the land and discovered some squatters like you. My friend goes out and asked them who they are and what they're doing on his property, and they not so politely tell him to fuck off. So, my friend does what most people would do in these circumstances: he called the cops. Cops come out and talk to the squatters and then tell him he has to go through an eviction process and all this other bullshit. They even had a bullshit lease agreement they claimed my friend signed. The problem was that the land had been for sale for over a year and the people looking at the land were the first to meet his asking price; but if they couldn't get these losers out of the trailer within the next 2 weeks, they were going to have to pass. SO..... that week he and I watched the property for a few hours a day to figure out when the squatters came and went. The next week he and I camped out and waited for them to leave, then we kicked in the door and looked around to make sure no people or pets were in the trailer. Then we hooked tow chains to the trailer frame, dragged it up a small hill on the corner of the property, and rolled it over... down the hill. It was pretty crazy. The whole shithole just came apart and all their junk just went all over the place. I really hope that everything they owned in the world was in that trailer, all of their sentimental items, all the crap that held back their moral progression. Next we got in his Ford F450xlt and drove over their shit while doing donuts, blew a tire and got 2 punctures. Overall, it was an immensely satisfying experience.
Its called a quiet title... check with the State you are IN before you take over a property. ALL of the States have a statute of limitations when it comes to foreclosures. In some states its 5 years, and others, its 6 years. You can head down to the City or County property appraisers office and file the Quiet Title and allow the City or County to investigate, once they clear the title, it becomes yours. Pay whatever property taxes are owed, and you have a new home. ALWAYS DO your homework before taking a home. Consult with a real estate lawyer to make sure that you are protected and not hauled off to jail.. Good House Hunting everyone :-)
If a property does not have its taxes paid for a period of three consecutive years than the property goes to the county and can be taken by anyone who pays the property taxes up to date. I have seen this many times before in my old line of work as a title researcher. If you don't pay your taxes, you no longer have a right to the property.
That is fine, as long as it is abandoned. There are slime ball squatters who use the law to take over a house, where the owner is gone for a week or two on vacation. Then it takes the owner forever to get the A-holes out of their house
There is an abandoned home nearby, the owner died, the relations don't want the place, the taxes weren't paid, next year the county would take it for unpaid taxes, so I paid the taxes, and by adverse possession essentially own the property. Must pay the taxes and maintain the property for ten years to truly own it, but what the heck, I can use it for the cost of the taxes. If the county took it, they would sell it at auction and use the fund for whatever.
Trespass against who? If the property has been abandoned and has back taxes owed then there is no trespass. If you live there or use the land as well as pay the taxes for a certain number of years, depending on which state you're in, the land will become legally yours.
Sorry but you are wrong. Lake Isabella is in Kern County and I live in Kern County. They used to make property owners go through the eviction process with squatters the same as renters and many of us complained so much the city attorney did some research and found out they and many other city attorneys were WRONG!!! Squatters don’t have to be given the whole lot of rights renters do, and require a judges order to be evicted. Kern County now allows property owners to post a 72 hour squatters notice on the property with the date and time it was posted listed. The property owner is also encouraged to post a no trespassing and no parking sign as well. When the 72 hours passes, not only is the sheriff required by law to remove the squatters, but whatever tow service the county uses has the legal right to tow any vehicles on or in front of the property. And any name on any mail in the mailbox can be used to provide to the US Postal Service for a federal investigation for legal charges. Because you see using a false address is a crime. If the squatters collected any state or federal aid, such as food stamps, welfare, SSDI, those agencies will open investigations. If a drivers license was issued with that address, that is DMV fraud. If a ticket was issued, that is fraud to that law enforcement agency. But best of all, if a credit card was issued to the squatter to that address, credit cards usually are based out of Delaware or other back East states nearby. They come to the squatter through the mail across state lines. That makes it a federal fraud within the jurisdiction of the FBI. And if any of them are on probation or parole, they have knowingly provided their parole/probation officer a fraudulent address because they knew they were illegally squatting. That violates the terms of both parole and probation. So it’s a really poor decision to make and will bite you in the ass if the property owner has any idea whatsoever they can do this to you. I did, and I did it to my squatters. And they learned a life lesson the hard way. But they were serial squatters and not about to stop. They had no shame for what they did, no guilt, and didn’t care how much harm they caused or how much damage they did to property that then had to be repaired. Nothing was ever their fault or their problem and the world owed them. So now they have free rent and they can wear free orange jumpsuits and eat free bologna sandwiches. Be careful what you ask for. You might get it.
Alina McPherson my property didn’t have any issues with unpaid taxes and my brother lived in a trailer on the property. So I’m not wrong. And there was no live able structure on it. So don’t make a blanket statement like that. Your statement is very specific and doesn’t apply to every situation. Many squatters literally camp out on vacant lots here in California due to our good weather. It’s the number one squatting situation. No house or structure means nobody has to have lived on the property. Thus adverse possession doesn’t apply to any entity other than the bank if you have a loan or the county if you don’t pay your taxes. Just try saying your right to squat and take possession overrides the county’s right to take possession over unpaid taxes. And I can tell you my county will not accept back taxes from someone who can’t prove they are the owner because the property then goes to auction and brings in more money for them. At that point, when taken for auction , any squatter would be removed by the county sheriff as a squatter with no rights to be on the property. No squatters rights and no rights to adverse possession overriding the county’s right to auction the property over unpaid back taxes. Same with the IRS. Don’t pay your federal taxes, they get first dibs on all your property and have ability to remove all inhabitants once they take control, without any local order, just their own federal order of adverse possession, and then they auction the property to go towards the true owners back taxes owed to the IRS. So don’t jump in with irrelevant info.
Hmmm ... ... if the house is empty because someone is involved in speculation (such as banks or real estate agents) just so that in 19 years they can sell the property from under you at a major profit ... then that shows that there is a major flaw with the legal system in whatever State (and Country) the property in question is situated and smacks of collusion and intent to manipulate the law. Now I know of someone that went overseas and is classified a "foreign worker" in another country, left his uncle on the property ... unfortunately, his uncle was a bit of a loner and when he died unbeknown to the owner, the place laid empty ... this is about 6 years ago ... so I am told ... does this man have the right to claim his real estate again?
It's so amazing how bold people are on the web and behind there phones, Ipad and lap tops. To all the ignored people who have made all the negative comes. This is not against the the law. You so upset that you didn't know that this was possible. She didn't have to say anything. Thank you for letting us know that there are other ways to own. Jealously is a terrible thing. For those idiots attempting to degrade you are just upset you have a better spot and they continue to work hard and every month barley paying that $3,000 or more mortgage and stop hating....... Thank you for the information
If the taxes are paid up to date then you just committed a felony. Its called breaking and entering and now everyone can see the evidence. The family farm (my family) was left unoccupied and used for hunting and camping and the like. Then somebody started squatting in the old house and when called on it they said they "owned" it! The gall! We finally got them out with the help of a lawyer, the courts, and the sheriff at the end of a gun. Make sure you know what you are doing. Check out the legal status of any property before you do this!
With a property like this you go to the courthouse, pull records, pay back taxes if any then you put a big sign out front stating that you've moved on to the property openly and notoriously with your name and phone number. If no comes within 5 years to claim or contest, you own the property.
My parents left their house for about 1 year alone. They paid the taxes and all. But some squatters tried to come in like this and act like it was theirs. Little did they know that I was still visiting the home and making sure there were no insects or rodents living in the home. I would go, spray, or set traps in the places where it wasn't visible. But I saw that someone was trying to squat. So I gave them the time up to one day before they could claim it. I walked in, with AK-47 full auto 100 round drum in hand, military style bullet proof vest on, extra banana clip if needed in the vest as well. They weren't there? Huh? So I sat there and waited. Ate some of their food, played with some of their stuff. And even took some binoculars they had. Lol! They didn't see me coming is the funny part. Finally around 7:30 pm, they walked in. With a group of 5 people and liquor in hand. They went around the back, and what a surprise when they walked in? A huge barrel sticking out at them. Some of the people ran, but of course the supposed new owners walked in non chaulently in. I told them, "If I ever see you around any of my properties again? I'm not going to wait for you to put your hands up. Get your shit and get the fuck out!" The girl asked me, "What other properties do you have?" I just yelled, "Get the fuck out before I just shoot!" That did the trick for these types of people. Plus one of the neighbors let us know people were walking into their house. So that was that. So just in case you're in Texas? You've been warned. We own several properties. No more warnings. Breaking into a home who's owners have guns is a BIG no no. Remember that next time.
There are varying laws pertaining to what is colloquially called, "Squatter's Rights." According to some, you can gain them from paying off the back taxes, provided no one else makes a rightful claim to repay them, within a set period of time. And, i guess, provided the bank is not involved somehow.... Usually these take place on the courthouse steps, quite literally. However, squatter's rights also apply to simply acquiring an otherwise abandoned property outright... with some various caveats.
Often homes wind up like this because of family disputes, very common with wills and probate. Once it's settled someone two states away may show up and throw you out. Yes, it is a shame when nice places deteriorate, but there's often much more behind the scenes stuff, and I wouldn't risk poking a hornet's nest like that.
Its called "Adverse Possesion" if you openly live on a property/abandoned property for x amount of time and live like you own it, meaning yard work, up keep, everything a normal owner does then its yours. These are old laws from a time when records were not sooo recorded., but they have never changed
Beautiful find. I hope you hold the title for as long as you need or want. In Great Britain if you own a property and wish to keep it but can't live there and wish to insure it you HAVE to get a squarer. Its one of the reason they have less homeless. I wish you nothing but success and happiness
abandoned houses in people living on the streets makes perfect sense to me. we as a people can do much better why don't we? why is the cost of housing so expensive how come most people can't afford house while some people have so many and some people have nothing at all?
The problem is largely due to zoning, permitting and city regulations that require the use of expensive materials (such as triple pane glass windows) or restrict the size of the home (in most places you could not legally build a 250 square foot or 400 square foot house bc the minimum is much higher) and the size of the lot. The cities think they are protecting the investments in the (neighbor's) homes by limiting what people can do on their own properties. Most cities won't allow you to farm any food on your front lawn, and some won't even allow you to collect rainwater or put up solar panels... bc they don't like the way it LOOKS. And since most cities are built for cars, not people, few places are within a safe walking distance of a grocery store, public transit, and jobs; and by "safe" I mean with sidewalks. Only with pressure from the public will these laws get changed. Then, perhaps, builders of muti-family housing units (apartments, condos, co-housing complexes) will be able to offer low-income units along with the regular income units without going broke in the process. Right now, my city has $8 million in HUD Section 8 vouchers getting unused every year bc the homeless can't find any home/apartment that will accept the vouchers!
@@auntcatziegler3791 that is a how a government city can get money.they claim they need funds for housing which is maybe true, but the government also knows that if know one takes the vouchers that year the state will claim nobody wanted it and will move the fund into an account. the account then could be used to pay their bonuses or be give a raise because they have the funds or use it for other city plans that they want.
As a former real estate broker and student of real estate law... At least in my state... I will say that it's good that you read the address out loud and that you're doing the video if your goal is come into possession of the house adversely. Because you are being what is called legally " open and notorious". People are entitled to their opinion I have mine but I won't say it. I will say I've seen situations where people have passed away who have absolutely zero heirs and no friends nobody. And I've seen neighbors move into their house and decades have gone by. I'm not entirely sure you need to pay any back taxes. Certainly the town would like that and it depends on the jurisdiction so I have zero knowledge or expertise there but it may be worth getting a second opinion on that! In my state it would mean that the town owned it so maybe that's really what you're doing is buying it from the town?
I would expect if a person passes away with no heirs. The estate would have to be probated so any claims anyone has against the individual can be sorted out by the assets one left behind. You won't want to find yourself on the hook for an outstanding bank leans against a property, even after you settle under with the property taxes.
I'm about to find out why a certain property hasn't been tax auctioned without a single payment in decades... no contact from living heirs on file... all the old contacts on paper have been dead for over 5 years. I checked. So I'm taking my shot off the starboard beam, matey.
No, but it seems if they hold onto it long enough ... they are in a win win situation. If an audit is in place, they could just lease the property out and ask a phenominal amount of money ... knowing quite well that no one will want to pay that much.
All you people so angry, I guess it's fine with you that abandoned houses sit rotting all over the world while homeless people sleep in the streets. Who did we buy the planet from, that we now have to pay to live here?
Just because it has no one living in it, does not mean the owners have not paid the taxes due. And the place to check and see if any past taxes are owed is at the County Assessors Office of the County where the property is located. They will have owner name(s), addy's and tax due(if any).
I am very sure this did not work out. CA Adverse Possession law state one has to both live in and pay the property taxes for 5 years. (AZ state limit is the lowest at 3 years in certain cases, so this is not a red vs. blue state issue). It looks like they were kicked out in a year so they did not meet the five year possession rule. If the taxes were not paid since 2005, then the property would go to Kern County. A tax search on 2232 COMMERCIAL AV LAKE ISABELLA on the Kern County Assessor-Recorder website for the property (ATN 263-352-03-00-2) shows the property taxes are up to date for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Past deed changes were: 217154575 Deed - Quitclaim 11/13/2017 and 206179429 Deed 07/24/2006. The total tax bill for 2018-2019 299.84 The Net Total Taxable Value: 19,000 so that is probably a Proposition 13 value. Adverse possession rarely works except in limited cases like HAGMAN v. MEHER MOUNT CORP. No. B239014. Hagman (Dallas/Dream of Jeannie star) won since Meher was tax exempt. "In 1987, one of the fences marking the boundary of his property was built in the wrong place. Since then, Hagman (who died in 2012) and his family have been occupying and improving a 0.44-acre portion of the 173-acre parcel owned by his adjoining neighbor, the Meher Mount Corporation." The only reason this worked was that Meher Mount was tax exempt so does not pay property taxes. I call BS on any troll who posts here that they have taken over a whole property using adverse possession. It simply does not happen. But trolls seem to claim any and everything on the internut.
How to Claim a Building: 1.) Get a job. 2.) Save up money. 3.) Purchase it like a normal person instead of acting like you're entitled to stuff that isn't yours.
You too have a valid point ... but let me remind you of something else: What if foul play occurred and people have just vanished ? Unless someone makes an enquiry or tries to help someone that is unable to move etc., due to an accident or (God forbid) the former, nothing is ever done and no one is helped, one way or another. I think it is good that people question or make an enquiry ...
With the value of the dollar in the shitter, employers paying shit wages, economy in slump, thousands of empty houses with contractors ripping up great natural Forrest... I say thank you for paying taxes owed (for whatever reason) and rescuing an abandoned house.
You are watching too much CNN, NBC, ABC. The economy is up, people are shopping more and certainly eating out more which costs money!!! You must have voted for Kilary!!
We're actually about to file against the attorney because he kept saying he was going to file, but instead he's strung us along. After that's filed I'll need to file the case myself. Updates will be posted to www.WildWillpower.org.
After living there ~7 or 8 months, local sheriff's deputies trespassed onto the property under false pretenses and arrested us, ignoring our paperwork with the state, and threatening us. We fled California. Unfortunately I am now filing a complaint against against the attorney who was working on our case on contingency, strung us along, then never filed. My complaint against him, coupled with the evidence, should extend the limitations period. I intend to sue asap.
Adverse possession usually takes several years you just can't pay the back taxes on someone's property and take it if that were the case everybody will be doing in most cases adverse possession you actually have to be living on the property taking care of the property for several years without the owner protesting your possession of their property you are nothing more than a glorified squatter all you dumbass sovereign citizens are the same
@@KK4KLII didn't steal anything. Dude left his property abandoned, so we adhered to the legal process for claiming it. Honestly I think the way we manage real estate in this country is a brutal joke. I get people capitalize on it, but yea really not a fan of the rental scam that is America.
You can pay the back taxes but that is a trailer park and there could be a lean by the trailer park owner on that property, and you would still be having to pay the mobile park fees. You can live in the trailer but can not own the land unless you pay the lot rent.

In St.louis we hold auctions for homes that have unpaid taxes, most are still occupied. This is legal in some cities. Depending on where you're from you don't get the deed to the home. You do get the deed in city I'd STL but not the county.
you did not discuss "how" to do anything you simply showed us the house.. title should have been "my free house tour" but it's obviouslysuppost to be clickbait
Keep it up @Alexandra. Many clueless people out there, i am grateful for them. their ignorance allows me and many others with an open mind and studies, to keep on profiting and do good to this world, opposed to what they may think.
Adverse possession. Depending upon the state, home owners can remove a trespasser from their property within a period of 5 to 40 years. Besides paying back taxes, the property has to be brought up to date and maintained for the period stated. After this period is met. Trespasser can file for Property Title. !!! Unbelievable, but true.
It's the very first part on the front page of the website "Robbed by Kern County Sheriffs". You can follow the case there - our attorney said he is filing this month so I'll put an update when he does.
Before y’all go out and do this. Check with title company and local tax office. In some states it’s 3 year behind on taxes, some it’s 7 years. Yes it is possible. You might want to talk to a property attorney also.

there was an abandoned house near my old house the walls were falling apart and the floors had caved in the house has been abandoned since like the mid 2000,s as far as i know
Adverse possession is malarkey Uninhabited homes are not abandoned homes - legal title for these properties still exists and is recorded with some legal entity. Time and time again, those that propagate this practice have ultimately been found to be illegally claiming adverse possession and said properties have been recognized as belonging to the lien holders of record.
The taxes hadn't been paid since 2005. The owner's don't want this property anymore. A lot of people just walk away from homes like this. You can go to any court house and find property like this in every town. The original owners are always contacted and given so many months "I don't remember how many " to pay these taxes and reclaim their property. Most don't. A lot of people purchase these homes just to flip for a profit. 😊

We were illegally removed from the property, and our attorney is filing suit against the county officials this month. I'll be posting to the website updates soon.
I'm sorry, but you cannot claim an abandoned building in any jurisdiction I've worked in as a lawyer in 40 years of practice. Property law is the same across almost the entire world, and I know for a fact that in the 1/3rd of the world that operates under the same laws as mine you have no claim to the property unless you own the deed, the end. If there's no deed, it's crown land or owned by the government. You're just illegally squatting.
I've seen a multitude of homes out in the country that are abandonned. On a drive I couldn't drive 3 minutes down road without running into one. I'd like to colaborate with someone doing this and we can just compare notes on methods. We don't have to share any personal info on where or anything. Let me know
Warning: In Virginia this is illegal. YOU CANNOT PURCHASE A HOME OR LAND JUST BY PAYING TAXES. All property it auctioned and to live in a home, brought up to code FIRST. All utilities must be kept running or you will eventually be locked out.
In Okla. You have to notify the Property owner by mail you have paid the taxes and they have just so long to repay you to keep the property, helps to have things cut and dried sooner.
"They can come back and pay the back taxes and reclaim the property with in a year of you taking possion." Not if the adverse possessor already paid the taxes. If that's the case, then any claim the record owner may have against the adverse possessor will be offset by the amount of the taxes.
in Colorado different in every state. sometimes different in every county in that state. sometimes different in every city of that county in that state. check with your local lawdog
If u buy from a tax sale and its not done right with back ground research on the property u can lose all u put in it ,,the banks or any one can have a lein against this property that does not go away wen u pay the county for the deed and taxes to get it ,my aunt lost hers after 10yrs of living in and rehabbing the home and land 10s of thousands she lost they walked away with personal property and thats it ,after the lein holders decided they could make a buck on it they stepped in on the property ,and they was more the 1 lein on it ,just a heads up oh the state and county does not likely will not tell u either whom the lein holders are they likely do not even kno its got a lein or leins since its done mostly in private by the lenders and the barrowers ,i looked in to this quite a bit ,so becarefull how you buy this way ,usually wen looking a gift horse in the mouth its dropping a load of crapp out its back side, the government gives nothing away without a catch
Any person can research the property for liens before making the purchase. Liens are a matter of public record, and a search may be conducted through the county recorder or clerk using the name of the property owner and address of the property. A title company may be used to search for liens on real property. If the lien hasn't been recorded at the time deed is transferred, in most cases, it can't be enforced against the property at a later date.
These comments are so uneducated. Investing in abandoned tax lien houses is the way to invest. Bankers do this all the time. Why would I take out a so called mortgage loan for $250,000 when I can get a tax lien home for dam near $5,000 or less. Then I can take the deed to the bank as a collateral and get a so called loan to fix the place up. Then I could sell that property for way more than what I bought it for and pay the bank back the so called loan and make extra money on top. Not only did I flip my $5,000 to a higher amount I also boosted my credit by paying the bank back. Duh seems like a win win situation here. The schools don’t teach you this because they need you to be dumb so they can eat off your labor. There no such thing as work hard in my world only watch your money work hard for you. Wake up folks you’ve been played!!!!!
I make more money than you using my mind and the degrees I've earned. I let people like you hustle for scraps. Professional with licensures vs. 2-bit flipper.
What you said is right along the same line of thought that I'm having right now...just don't have the money to pay the back taxes atm (4K+) and don't understand how it's possible to enter the property to asses any possible value without catching a charge in the process of doing so. This particular property has been abandoned for years. Can I get in trouble for essentially "breaking into" it? New to this whole thing.
How do you claim an abandoned building? All property are registered to some one as the owner. If they owner does not pay taxes on it, it goes in to default and the city seizes it. They then turn around and sell it at auction. If the owner does not maintain the upkeep and keep it to certain standards, they order the owner to do so. If not, they send in people clean up the lot so it conforms to the neighborhood and add the costs to the tax bill. If the tax bill is not paid, they again seize it and sell it. Most people's understanding of adverse possession is all wrong. Even modern policy and government employees misunderstand the original intention of the law and what how it works. This allows people to get affidavits from the local government to adversely claim a property. So the police don't understand it and don't do shit to squatters. Adverse possession was created in the 1800s, is about boundary claims of land not being used or undefined, such as a property line, piece of land, etc. It was to encourage land development and usage of unused land (not houses). With the current civilized society, as mentioned above, adverse possession shouldn't actually exist any more because city takes over everything that is unclaimed. They are stupid if they don't do it, and simply allow "adverse possession" to the citizens.
But if someone squats in a house it is illegal to put locks on the doors or remove them it's almost the same as letting someone live in your home rent free for over a month then trying to kick them out. By law you cannot do that. My friend owned a house and didn't want to pay taxes on it so he moved out and I still lived in it for a year without the bank coming and trying to get me out they didn't even bother. And when they tried to have a lock Smith put a lock on the door when I opened the door he said sorry didn't know anyone was living here and left he told me he couldn't lock the door if someone was living in the house no matter it belonging to the bank
ownership and deeds mean everything...a person cannot just go onto a property and take it...unless the property is seen as abandoned and not kept up...as a property is meant to be...
Edward Mcintire, There are people who claim a property is abandoned, break the locks, and move in. Then, when the owners come home from vacation, they are the ones who have to go through the court system, prove they own the house, and try to get the squatters out. Average time: 2 years.
According to google she is squatting but after 20 years can prove in court that she has maintained the property, paid the taxes and then if approved and not contested by the owner she can become the rightful owner.
This questions for the woman that took over the home,,,,,, I have a completely similar situation and I'm wondering how can I get the water turned on from sidewalk? do I have to pay some of the taxes initially?
Is it okay to claim one of these houses if theres clearly no one living (even squatters) in the home, but not live there? Like post a sign or something out front claiming? (In missouri)
you have to live there in order to be within the adverse possession law...you cannot claim adverse possession if you aren't in physical possessionok of a property
It is totally legal. My brother didn't pay taxes on his house. A lady played them and took possession while he lived there. Then sold it back to him. Totally legal.
Small town America has thousands and thousands of abandoned properties. Mom and dad pass on and the kids can't sell because nobody wants to live in small towns anymore. They try to maintain the property for a little while but before too long taxes become due, no one wants to pay the taxes, once taxes laps then so does maintenance. Soon you have a derelict property that nobody wants. However, some times it is better to have a derelict property next door than some of the human garbage that can move in. Squatters can move in and Use up what is left of the property in a hurry and leave it in much worse condition than when it was just abandoned. I've seen druggies take over houses, never get any utilities turned on , use the place to cook meth, defecate everywhere, shoot up everywhere... Then the county/community is on the hook for a contaminated site clean up.
Dana says- It's a shame that laws that would crack down on abandoned homes and take care of these issues have been blocked and/or repealed for various reasons. When I lived in central Florida in the 80s the mayor of Tampa (Sandy Freedman) passed laws about abandoned properties that severely cut down on supplies of crack houses (meth wasn't a thing yet, that I know of). If a house wasn't being maintained, notices were posted, letters mailed to property ownder's last known address, and public notices were put in the newspaper, all warning that the home would be claimed by the city. if the property wasn't brought up to code and maintained to an acceptable standard by that time, the city would seize it and then they did one of two things: sold it (sometimes refreshing it before the sale, sometimes selling with a clause that stipulated the new owners had 60 or 90 days to get the property fixed up), or Sandy would let the fire departments use the property to practice doing various drills on (like putting out fires, ER demolition), ordinance disposal drills (if it wasn't endangering any other property, etc). It was awesome! Crime went down. Fire Departments had free places to practice on. The city was earning revenue from the houses they could sell, and no lots were sitting there rotting, leaving the city open to potential law suits (which they had previously when people trespassed and got injured and sued the city for). I wish every city could do this now.
Is that law in Oklahoma still in affect?

How to steal an abandoned property
It says how to claim ...not how to look at.
SHE'S CLAIMING THIS ABANDONED PROPERTY THROUGH A LEGAL PROCESS CALLED ADVERSE POSSESSION!
How do I do this
Darling, the banks ARE doing something ... and so DO estate agents ... most of the time they then claim these properties for themselves ...
years ago I tried to organize a group of pensioners to claim such a property but couldn't find anyone to be interested ...
re my post above, yes I agree with you ... it is such a waste of resources but no one really wants to start paying bills on a regular bases ... as I said, I tried to organize a group of pensioners, together with myself, to actually claim such a property ... and there are lots of really good buildings out there with 4-5 bedroom 2-3 (sometimes) bathrooms and nice big kitchens but ... what the heck ... no wonder so many people from 3rd grade countries are getting rich ... they are prepared to do some work, not take any alcohol or drugs ... and then the govt/states are no longer obliged to give you owner informations ... under the guise that it is a privacy issue.

So I’ll be claiming this property next week, if you can please move out.
:/ maybe the commenter was being silly. Itd be nice if things worked that way tho
@Alina McPherson you sound very knowledgeable. We should talk. I have a question for you.
It's occupied now!
Thanks. That helps
Wonderful info
Wrong… that’s your opinion dude. Not law

Overall, it was an immensely satisfying experience.
you are now my new hero. i would have done the same thing
This is an epic story. You should have video-taped it, as well as you guys telling the squatters to eat shit when they came back.

Isn't it illegal to destroy someone's things?

KFStreich ...it didn't say "no trespassing"
If a property does not have its taxes paid for a period of three consecutive years than the property goes to the county and can be taken by anyone who pays the property taxes up to date. I have seen this many times before in my old line of work as a title researcher. If you don't pay your taxes, you no longer have a right to the property.

In order to be trespassing... You have to be trespassing against someone... Who was she trespassing against???
+Darrel May// WHY SO HOSTILE? (case of NIH?)
Seen a lot of videos like this. Your understanding of California Adverse Possession law is utterly lacking.
Morally wrong stealing is stealing simple as that .
Hmmm ... ... if the house is empty because someone is involved in speculation (such as banks or real estate agents) just so that in 19 years they can sell the property from under you at a major profit ... then that shows that there is a major flaw with the legal system in whatever State (and Country) the property in question is situated and smacks of collusion and intent to manipulate the law.

Is there an update video on how your house turned out? Beautiful place
Indeed. In Texas, homeowners have all the rights!
Its legal though unfortunately... Has been since like 1700s
Its called "Adverse Possesion" if you openly live on a property/abandoned property for x amount of time and live like you own it, meaning yard work, up keep, everything a normal owner does then its yours. These are old laws from a time when records were not sooo recorded., but they have never changed
@@msain427fortunately***
Beautiful find. I hope you hold the title for as long as you need or want. In Great Britain if you own a property and wish to keep it but can't live there and wish to insure it you HAVE to get a squarer. Its one of the reason they have less homeless. I wish you nothing but success and happiness
Were you able to follow through on the adverse possession?
abandoned houses in people living on the streets makes perfect sense to me. we as a people can do much better why don't we? why is the cost of housing so expensive how come most people can't afford house while some people have so many and some people have nothing at all?
Calvin Barrett so...your bottom feeder???
no...you are
The problem is largely due to zoning, permitting and city regulations that require the use of expensive materials (such as triple pane glass windows) or restrict the size of the home (in most places you could not legally build a 250 square foot or 400 square foot house bc the minimum is much higher) and the size of the lot.

I use to think it was wrong, but after doing more research this is my stance as well
I'm about to find out why a certain property hasn't been tax auctioned without a single payment in decades... no contact from living heirs on file... all the old contacts on paper have been dead for over 5 years. I checked. So I'm taking my shot off the starboard beam, matey.
Banks don't resell the properties because they make more money from the Fed. Gov. insured loan going into default.

Ann Black I would love to know more about how you did it.
Ann Black can you text me how u went about paying the back taxes on property. 757 354 4222
id also like details on how to go about paying back taxes
Akina Brodeak contact your city accessor office and ask about paying taxes...

There is nothing that is owned in this life. We are nothing more than guest upon the earth. Any part that is used is only borrowed and that includes our physical body for it is made of the same ingredients that make the rivers and the mountains. Once our journey is complete, the vessel is returned to the land and the cycle completed, begins again. Adverse possession. Depending upon the state, home owners can remove a trespasser from their property within a period of 5 to 40 years. Besides paying back taxes, the property has to be brought up to date and maintained for the period stated. After this period is met. Trespasser can file for Property Title. !!!
So you just decided to take someone’s house. Such a kind soul you are. “What a blessing?” I’m sure the actual homeowners aren’t saying that.

WRONG, the Cali law says you only have to occupy the property for 5 consecutive years and pay p taxes. No mention of the deed at all. Nice try bitch
There were bullet holes all over the fence and one of the buildings! How dangerous is that area?
There weren't bullet hole anywhere there.

Can we have an update? What's it look like now?
I've seen a multitude of homes out in the country that are abandonned. On a drive I couldn't drive 3 minutes down road without running into one.
I'd like to colaborate with someone doing this and we can just compare notes on methods. We don't have to share any personal info on where or anything. Let me know
Warning: In Virginia this is illegal. YOU CANNOT PURCHASE A HOME OR LAND JUST BY PAYING TAXES. All property it auctioned and to live in a home, brought up to code FIRST. All utilities must be kept running or you will eventually be locked out.
That's some weird mobile home with walls tacked on to one end. Good luck.
Idk where this is but that's not how it works in Texas
Got to watch yourself though. They can come back and pay the back taxes and reclaim the property with in a year of you taking possion.
Dana says- Or longer, depending on the laws in your area. Totally true.
In Okla. You have to notify the Property owner by mail you have paid the taxes and they have just so long to repay you to keep the property, helps to have things cut and dried sooner.
Now here is another doozy to think about ... "TEST-ALL-THINGS" ... says it is 5 years and you say (within a year) one year ... which is it?
"They can come back and pay the back taxes and reclaim the property with in a year of you taking possion." Not if the adverse possessor already paid the taxes. If that's the case, then any claim the record owner may have against the adverse possessor will be offset by the amount of the taxes.

@@lulabell79_31 in my state they have the right to file even after you buy it. Very sad rule.
Now that's good advice.
The question remains: How many gifthorses has baby Gizmo seen in his day?
Who owns this house and have the owners been contacted before entering?
Squatter don't have rights.
You would be very suprised that they in fact do, sad really.
And when they tried to have a lock Smith put a lock on the door when I opened the door he said sorry didn't know anyone was living here and left he told me he couldn't lock the door if someone was living in the house no matter it belonging to the bank

you have to live there in order to be within the adverse possession law...you cannot claim adverse possession if you aren't in physical possessionok of a property
It is totally legal. My brother didn't pay taxes on his house. A lady played them and took possession while he lived there. Then sold it back to him. Totally legal.
Not in Texas..
She kept on saying “NICE” blah blah blah etc 😂
Is there a part 2 of this that’ll explain the title?
