I bought his recovery book and part way through it smacked me in the face that he’s a self-obsessed maniac who thinks he’s a higher being. I find him exhausting but the way he’s became some bun-headed darling of the right, I’d never have predicted that.

Someone sent some early Petersen for me to read years ago. I read and reread the first pages a couple times before confirming that he was indeed using a lot of convoluted language to say nothing. Also had made up stats in it. I'll never truly understand his appeal, but I guess he's what a not too smart person thinks a smart person sounds like. They both seem to have lost their minds entirely.
For native English speakers their words are quite poetic and a pleasant intellectual stimulation compared to the brain dead alternatives.

He started out doing left wing liberal TH-cam videos a decade ago, and while he did develop a following it didn't create a huge one, so he went into more self-help type videos around 2017 but it was when he talked about hesitancy about vaccines early in the COVID pandemic, his viewership suddenly spiked to huge levels. At the time it was just a skeptical thesis about whether an effective vaccine could be produced, but his videos only went full MAGA after his TH-cam views went up dramatically and he got a whole bunch of sponsors for his videos ala Alex Jones and other right wing influencers.

Russell brand is allegedly sober. He has stated his recovery includes alcoholism, drug and sex addiction. If you look up sobriety in the dictionary it states peace of mind(serenity). And the two words can be used interchangeably. Does anyone think he looks peaceful in mind and therefore sober?

When I learned how Russell Brand would buy winter coats for homeless people, my respect and esteem for him soared. After seeing what a NUT he's turned into, I'm not so sure anymore.
Similar experience. There was a period not too long ago where he seemed really enlightened and self aware. I actually went to see him and bought a VIP ticket. He did his comedy show first and then came back out afterwards for the VIPs and sat on the edge of the stage and just talked with us. He did this so long that the venue had to ask us to leave the auditorium and he came out to the foyer and spent time with everyone until everyone had enough. Then the whole right wing thing happened and I have to say that I don't feel comfortable listening to him anymore. It feels unhinged and paranoid.

@LawrenceAkers he can be a true "man of the people". Similar to you, I really liked him too. I noticed a small change when the right started giving him attention, then a larger change after the allegations came out. This probably isn't good for the mental health of someone in recovery.
Russell is at his best when he's on a journey for truth. Once he thinks he's found the truth, he's too hyper focused to the point that it sounds a bit crazed.
But I do believe he's genuine. Even if I no longer support his message, he's got enough good will from me that I still have love for him.
I used to like some of the work he did in movies and I enjoyed watching him roast fashion designers who made outfits for Nazis without even changing their name but since then he's gone full 180.
