    The Murjani Massacre! It's so pleasurable to see Chris double-bagel Martina. Chris' fans had to endure too many tough losses dealt out by MN!

    Trivia -- Chris and hubby at the time John Lloyd were the resident pros at Amelia Island.
    I suggest ppl traveling to Florida allot a few hours to drive by there, it is so GORGEOUS !
    We experienced prob one of the most beautiful sunsets in my lifetime there.
    Situated near Jacksonville, it shouldn't be too far out of your way when you drive to Florida

    Evert just refused to give any gifts in this match. She built her game around making few errors and punishing aggression in her opponents. But watch how she does it. Its mostly in the fundamentals, the mechanical basics that she does right every single time she strikes the ball. Its in the flawless footwork to get there, the impeccable balance at point of contact, the early racket preparation, and consistent follow-through. Add her notorious concentration, uncanny anticipation, tactical mastery and her complete control of her emotions, and you have one of the greatest players the sport saw. Evert has plenty of talents of her own, but they are not as flashy as in other greats like Graf, Serena or Martina.

      well said brian.. evert was all this and more.... funny? that those who do not know the game, simply thought evert was a backboard and just got the ball back which couldn't be further from the truth... she was the MASTER of point construction and every stroke, every point had a plan and thought steps ahead.... and YES SHE WAS ALSO MUCH MUCH MORE then just a mind, you don't get to be number 1 in the world for years and all time great in a athletic sport without having incredible physical talent to go with that mind of hers....

    Although I wish tennis was played in a huge Stadium these little tournaments are the reason tennis is so successful

    Unreal. Can't believe Martina didn't win a game. Whoa

    Good for Evert to not rub it in. She basically said that while she played well, she could see that Martina was obviously off.

    ah- the match that changed everything. Martina was so humiliated, she got her butt in gear and began to train for the first time. The results changed the game FOREVER!

    • @aagold76
      @aagold76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      true- she was #1 78-79, but she started to slide 80-81, she dropped to number 4 when this match happened- Hana was starting to look like she was next and Tracy was about to comeback strong (then sadly reinjure herself)....Martina met Nancy Lieberman at this tournament and their relatinship began the night before the fina;- an all night 'firt time' didn't help her on the court (Martina later admitted this after Nancy FINALLY owned up tot the relationship)Martina revolutionized the sport- first to switch to mid size graphite, first to really train, first to have a team- which she was ridiculed for at the time. She truly was a transformative figure- and it pretty much started here :)

    • @aagold76
      @aagold76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      definitely- she had an amazing amount of talent- it's just never maximized it until 1981- Renee Richards has said she was dumbfounded when she first started working with Martina- because Martina knew NOTHING about strategy/etc- she played on pure instinct- Renee taught her to plan for a match- know an opponents strengths and weaknesses. Writer Johnette Howard describes Martina as the perfect storm- she had it all and once she put it all together- she annihilated people!

      @@aagold76Yeah, Martina let it slip she and Nancy may have gotten "too cozy" the night before this match that totally sapped her energy to play against Chris the next day.
      But at this point in their rivalry, Chris was still the superior player, but things were about to change....

    • @aagold76
      @aagold76 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shihlin1 Chris was better at that point, but Martina could still beat her then- love and love was more about the night before ;)

      @@aagold76What a year for Martina in '81.
      Who knew after this match that she would beat Chris in two grand slam tournaments -- and winning the Australian Open (tho barely) -- the rest of the year

    This is pre-Mike Estep. Martina became so much more aggressive after he was brought on board!

    Oh how I miss Bud Collins! "Is it true you were raised on dirt floors in Fort Laudedale to get you adjusted to the clay surface?" LOL!!! He finally got Evert to crack a smile because she was always devoid of personality in public. Love it!
    I say this not to start anything, but the few times I have seen such a physical transformation in sports, well, it was because of PED. It was legal back then, but Martina did more than just change her diet and fitness program, let's be objective here.

    How many times was Martina ever double-bageled in her career? Not many I'll wager

    In all fairness to Martina, the first half of 1981, her game and fitness were at an all-time low.
    She was out of shape and getting by purely on her natural talent for the game.
    It was around this time she met Nancy Lieberman, the WNBA all-star player.
    But it would be months before Martina began to be transformed by Lieberman's training regimen from hell.
    It would take a couple of more bad losses in '81 before Martina truly believe it was time to overhaul herself and her game.
    Three years after this match at the very same tournament in '84, Martina allowed Chris only 2 games in the final as payback
