Thank you very much for showing everyone what's inside the book. I'm sold ... just ordered. We are in lockdown again (NZ ...it's tedious) but hopefully it will turn up in the post soon. Stay safe!
I got this book in the mail a few days ago...I was a bit surprised by the size...but once I looked through it, I was very happy to have it in my collection...but of course I'm a fan of process....
I received this also last week and remembered how you helped me out some years ago with a copy of Love Nest. So a great opportunity to say again Thank you! to you. Thank you!
Interesting to see what artists Burns copies in his sketchbooks; he really gravitates toward 50's pre-code comics. That cover to #4 s a pretty direct copy of an Al Feldstein comics cover for a scrapped EC teen comic called Going Steady With Peggy. Prior to his signing up at EC, Feldstein specialized in teen humor comics like Junior and Sunny. The difference between his art and the Archie standard was an almost surgical obsession with tightly clothed breasts. I can see his precise ink line being an influence on Burns.
I'm waffling over getting this one, but he's hard to resist. I'd love another volume of Facetasm, using other artists in combo with his images, or perhaps full bodied exquisite corpse-tasm. Cornelius also printed that Shigeru Mizuki Yokai art book, which is a real beauty. No language concerns, there, just art. Not sure if you ever checked him out, but he's got a bit of Burns/Friedman ink and stippling at a high level of competence.
no blasphemy at all... when I look at one picture alone I prefer the sketch very often. Different thing when you put these in a storytelling sequence though

There's something how Burns draws heavy inks in that they flow with this river stream feel, coupled with the Lynd Ward dramatics and body horror..
Thank you. Very interesting view and point of ;-)

He is ridiculously good at shading.

Charles Burns is someone I've been aware of, but I haven't taken a deep dive into his stuff yet.

Shouldn't he have retitled this collection "Expensive Shit, formerly known as Free Shit"...y'know, as it's £17.99 on Amazon?
Thanks for reviewing this. I apologize for the blasphemy but in some cases i prefer the initial sketch over the final drawing.
