  • A special tribute to Doctor Who (2005-2017).
I wanted to make a love letter to the era of the show that I loved and will always consider the golden age of Doctor Who. Hope you enjoy!

I loved this so much, and yes it did make me cry.
It reminded me of the speech Church gives at the end of season 13 in Red vs Blue (even if u don't know the show and aren't interested, it's worth a listen).
Anyway, thank you so much for this

The magic or Doctor who cannot truly be overstated, for every bad writing choice or casting call is a generation that doesn't remember a time before.
Doctor who is a series about hope, love and magic that manages to evoke every emotion under the sun; not just joy but unimaginable rage.
I want to be a writer one day, i want to write a story thats so rich and powerful that someone can grow up watching its protagonist before becoming that man yourself. I love doctor who and everything it stands for; its proof that whilst all good things end it doesnt mean the end of the good those things can do.

Exactly. A show as beloved as this should never have been coopted by identity politics. There's a reason the two most recent failed, and it's the same reason rings of power failed, and the same reason why the witcher failed. The agenda takes precedence over the art.

@@CrusaderZav As a queer person I wholeheartedly agree they're doing it badly, but including queer people isn't the issue, it's the way they've started executing it.
In season 1 (of the 2005 series obviously) the doctor kisses a man who is also evidently a raging bisexual (they DID NOT even try to hide it. It's directly extremely queer)
Then we have the fact that the doctor literally changes gender
And one of the episodes where a group of alien people in a room are referred to as something basically along the lines of ladies, gentlemen, and (insert a bunch of terms that would describe genderless or mixed gender people)
And that's not mentioning the plethora of other queer stuff mixed in because the list would go on forever
Queerness was never an issue in doctor who. They did great with it actually. But I can agree the most recent season (and the first of fourteen's episodes) feel much more like they're going for 'diversity points' rather than actually portraying queer people existing normally just like everyone else. Fourteen's first episode actually pretty much directly disses men (to be fair they did say male-presenting so trans mascs too I suppose) which didn't really make any sense in the context of the situation since the doctor was literally a woman RIGHT before that episode???? They dissed him for being male presenting saying he 'just wouldn't understand' when he's been female presenting before
They target audience of the show has definitely shifted I think. But that's what happens with shows like this. If they go on for a very long time you shouldn't expect them to stay the same. Society changes and these shows change with it. Again, I agree they're definitely making it feel a bit forced though. They had it set up wonderfully for a gradual shift to the current vibe they have going on (I think Bill and twelve were a good example. Clearly queer, literally had a discussion about gender, Bill being an obvious lesbian, but still it wasn't too direct and didn't seem like they were mindlessly mashing in queer themes for diversity points), but they fucked it over and just suddenly changed how the show addresses things and feels. If they had eased into it more rather thank making it really sudden (and also if it didn't insult people's gender in an 'attempt' to be inclusive wtf???) then I think the change would've been welcomed a lot more by the community.
Like I said, twelve and bill felt much more like a natural portrayal of queerness, definitely more direct and open on the topic than earlier seasons (even though a huge amount of important characters before that were being gay as hell the whole time. Looking at jack as the obvious example), thirteen definitely isn't one of my favourites but yaz was another queer character that was definitely more obvious than some of the previous seasons but again didn't feel jammed in just for diversity points, but then there was a whole switch up when it was Fourteen's turn. Instead of showing queer characters as real people with real thought and emotion attached to their queerness it was more 'look here's a Transgender! Look we're talking about pronouns! Look, Girl power men suck!'. Diversity is great, happy they're including disabled people better now too (wheelchair with fucking missile launcher was great. Again felt a bit like they were going for diversity points but had they not introduced the disabled character in the same episode as all the above it would've definitely felt less like a jarring attempt at diversity for the sake of money and viewers and would've come off more as just a confident disabled character, which is a great thing to have, disability rep is still shit rn) but it's just rainbow capitalism at this point. Stuffing in queer people not as queer PEOPLE but as QUEER people. Because they saw queer people and thought 'we can get money off them! Throw some trans characters and pronouns down and they'll come running to watch our show and buy the merch!' and that's why it comes off as so forced. El problema es el capitalismo, after all
So yeah, us queer people agree. We love representation but we don't want it to be forced. We don't want rainbows in your face. We want rainbows in the background. We want queer characters to be characters first. We don't want their personality to be 'im transgender queer queer pronouns pronouns let's go to pride! I hate cisgender men!'.
Please don't blame us for the people trying to take advantage of our experiences for the sake of making extra money. We're on the same side here.

@@T13GUY Yeah nice essay about queerness. I'm gay myself, and the last few seasons of Doctor Who just suck. I don't blame queer people, I primarily blame the tiny but POWERFUL minority of virtue-signallers, desperate to secure the woke-award. The episodes suck because the agenda, whenever uttered, wrenches you out of the immersion of an episode. It ALWAYS feels shoe-horned in, and you're immediately reminded of the writers and the actors, and lose the characters. I don't need nor want to be preached at by RTD, nevertheless it appears as though it's his imperative to virtue signal as much as possible. I want to watch Doctor Who, not propaganda. In fact that's what I am doing, I'm in the middle of S6 (again) as i write this.
