Terrifying! My grandparents and my then 9 year old cousin survived a horrific tornado by jumping into the bathtub. Then my grandpa threw his body over both and held on for dear life. They lived in Indiana at the time in a mobile home. After it passed, the only thing left was that bathtub with 3 precious souls wondering how they survived it.🫣😳 The bathtub was sitting in a sea of debris. On a lighter note, they made the front page of the newspaper. It was in the late 70’s. People died from that tornado🌪️that day. I can’t imagine what this storm here felt like.💔Oh my goodness..😔 This is heartbreaking, as is any loss in these storms. Both lives and destruction of properties.

I have been witness to many hurricanes and the one thing I have learned is death doesn’t always come in with the actual storm, the elderly are most vulnerable in the years following a hurricane and I have seen very tough souls die of broken hearts as they come back home and try to start life all over again, it takes years off of lives. I don’t know why we stay💔
We all live in places of danger. Tornados, floods, snow storms, hurricanes, valcanoes, and earthquakes are things we cannot control. The graveyards hold those who have seen the worst of mother nature, and mankind.
Some of us don't! I stem from Baytown, which had more than its share of these monsters. I had enough of them and the fire ants and moved north - permanently. You have no idea how peaceful it is every August and September, not to fear a water monster coming at you.
@@Wendeajo We're from Baytown too, since the early 1900's of the oil boom and tri-cities. We won't leave because we love the strength and spirit of the people, and the beautiful winters of not freezing to death. Maybe you just can't handle a little discomfort.
I admit I can't, I guess. That last summer of 2021 nearly did me in. It's so much easier to warm up than it is to cool down. From what I heard of this year's triple digit summer, I'm doubly glad I moved. The people here have a strength and spirit also, very like the old pioneers who settled the northern plains. (There are good people everywhere.) Sad thing is, all my old crowd died and it got lonely in Baytown.
I live in south Florida and I've grown used to hurricanes. But the hurricane in Galveston is absolutely unfathomable. Gives me chills just thinking about how much fear those people must have had. 😢❤

Charles Anderson surrendered to my 7th cousin Admiral David Farragut in Mobile .Funny thing is Charles' married my 6th cousin and his son is my 7 th cousin. Mark married another of my cousins, Eliza Liew,. She is my cousin on the exact same side .
I was born and raised here in Galveston county. Can’t believe you were here… glad you covered this. Such a tragic story. I grew up hearing the stories.
The first time I saw and walked this cemetery was in spring of 2018. What caught my eye was the sea of golden flowers that covered every square inch of it. I don’t know a whole lot about flowers but it was so beautiful I just had to stop. I knew it had to be a old cemetery for the design of the markers and the concrete walkways all through out. The whole city was so beautiful and clean. Someday I would love to go back and spend more time there. I just live about five hours drive away from there and I can remember as I was growing up my parents and everyone talking about this hurricane how it devastated the island and killed so many people because they were swept out to sea.

I grew up in NW Iowa. We used to get the storms after they traveled into the country from the coast. Lots of wind and rain left over from the hurricanes. That tells you how huge and powerful they are. I have never been in a hurricane and have no desire to do so. Thank you Ron.☮️💖🎶
Those poor little children.😥 I read a story years ago about that orphanage and the hurricane. It was a very sad story and still is. I'm so glad our weather predictions are way better now.

Sometimes there is folklore about storms. Where I grew up in Kansas, an Indian claimed a tornado would never cross the Little Arkansas River on the east side. It never has. This was where the Santa Fe Trail went through, near my farm.

As somebody that just rode out hurricane Ian. I can attest, it does sound like a train coming for hours and hours. It seems like it'll never end during the storm. The wind sounds alive, the rain is painful. It's really an amazing thing to survive. Even in 2022 there was significant loss of life. Nothing like 1900 but it really blew my mind. I've been through multiple storms but nothing like hurricane Ian.
You hit close to home on this one! My maternal grandmother, b.1893 in Galveston,used to tell me the frightening stories of the storm, how bodies were stacked up. Stayed with her til her death in 1983. Another well-told story. Thank you

Most of them were from Europe...never heard of hurricanes. But they sure built the Wall Steet of the Southwest with fevor and art and determination. I'm sure it was incredible, just bby seeing some of the few remaining massive structures and majestic homes they built. The island was also home to the first newspaper in Texas, and also electricity, Thomas Edison made his first motion picture there. The area has a magical effect on people who venture to the mansions and the history and what's left of the outback...it's getting quite populated with people moving there from all over the country, as well as the top notch medical school there.
Talk about the strength of house construction the house looked to have little damage falling off its foundation. Wow most homes of newer construction would not even take the wind much less any water or falling off its foundation. Wow!!. Have a good week sir.

Galveston Texas.....in 2012 of July my mom and older sister and I caught a cruise ship and traveled to Jamaica and cayman islands and Cosmo Mexico and we Swam with dolphins 🐬 there in Mexico and it was fun I've been there but not since July 2012...I love sea life dolphins and orca whales they are beautiful.... beautiful in Galveston Texas there were dolphin around the ship ave my older sister said Mary come see the dolphins 🐬....🐋🦭🐧🦈🐠💕💕.... thanks for telling these ppls stories and remembering them not forgotten!!! Heartbreaking, I can't imagine 140 mph winds.. so many lives lost due to mother nature.. truly Heartbreaking about the people in the orphanage. May all those who passed away be resting in eternal peace 🕊⚘️🙏💔
Great story Ron. Btw, I love how all of these cemeteries are laid out so differently too. Love the little pathways in this one. Whenever I would tell my dad that I wish we lived somewhere else, he would always say that Chicago is the safest place to live. He said everywhere else you go, you have to deal with hurricanes, earthquakes, typhoons, rattlesnakes, bears, mountain lions etc. Now and then I think he may have had a point. What a horrible disaster this was. You sure have a way of bringing stories to life. I'm amazed that the pictures you inserted survived all of these years. Think of everything they've been through. I watch a rehab show on the Magnolia Network called Restoring Galveston and I am surprised how many homes from before 1900 survived the Hurricane. Michael and Ashley Cordry have rehabbed many of those old homes that survived including one that has a plague that said the home survived the hurricane and the plague was at the height of the water in and around the house.
I was hoping you would do this story. I was patiently waiting. I read somewhere that the priest and nuns were told they could leave but refused because they didn’t want to abandon the children.
One of the poor men who survived the Civil War, died in the 1900 hurricane on his birthday 9/8/1900. You are, once again, inanother one of my favorite cemeteries. My friends as I call them. Great work!
I love your channel. I was just there at this cemetery two days ago. I wonderful homeless man who also gives tours came up to us and gave us so much information and history. It was absolutely fascinating. This cemetery has been on my bucket list a while so I was happy not only to check it off my list but to also have had someone so knowledgeable show me the place. He didn’t ask but we paid him for his short tour.
Another location that I have my own hurricane experience. I never stayed in a place hit by a large Hurricane until Sept 2008 when Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and Houston TX. It was a very scary experience that O never wish to go through again. Leading up to Ike landing I saw the stories of Sept 1900 including an old news story that went into great depth about the 1900 storm. Galvaston prior to the 1900 Hurricane was being developed and promoted as the second key financial district for the US. And, things were goibg well until the Hurricane

They say the Walmart is haunted by the orphanage occupants that were killed. Only 3 survived out of over 100. Isaac’s own wife and unborn child were killed
What a story, I hadn't really known much about this historic storm. I was so sad to hear about the poor children in the orphanage, oh my gosh. The photos show complete devastation. I'm sure that it haunted the families of the area for many years. May they all rest in peace 🌷 🙏

I lived on Galveston in the 80s and rode out a couple hurricanes there. Then moved to Western Washington and had a few earthquakes, now I live in tornado alley. I must be a glutton for punishment. Seriously though, All that pales in comparison to those braves souls who had to endure the pure hell of Galveston in Sept. 1900. RIP.
Alot was learned from that hurricane as was Katrina. Galveston is such a unique place, you should ride the ferry they have that goes over to Bolivar and see the old lighthouse. There is much haunted there.👻😵💫💯👍
I've never been through a hurricane but I've witnessed several tornadoes. The not knowing if your loved ones are ok is torturous. I can't imagine days of that. Rip to all the souls lost.
Jesus. I once saw a documentary, red the hurricanes of 1900. Frightening. Thank God we have the technology we have tdy. The alert system, shows what path, the storm will take & gives u enuff time to evacuate, and go to higher ground, or leave the city if they so choose. RIP to those that list their lives & lived ones.

Hello, Ron, I love your channel and how courteous and respectful that you are. I am hoping some day that you would be able to do a story of the Green Man (Raymond Robinson) who lived and died in western Pennsylvania. He was severely injured in a childhood electrical accident and would not go out in public as he was disfigured. They say he walked at night along a trail and railroad tunnel near my house and people who saw him said that he glowed green. Very sad story. God bless you.

I used to live in Galveston. There is another cemetery there closer to the ocean. I used to walk my children through it. There are stones there that simply say “Lost in the Storm” . No explanation needed.
I can't imagine how scared the people must have been. Just a horrific storm. I've heard about this storm but never realized how destructive it really was. Bless all those people who perished and the ones who lived. It would have been harder for them. Thank you, as always, Ron, for your awesome story telling.

Ron, thank you for telling us about this brave man. Such an amazing story about this incredibly brave man who survived the deadly hurricane. I remember Daddy telling me about the hurricane, the enormous carnage and death toll rising as the storm continued its path across the continent and out to the ocean far north, and the bodies from Galveston Island washing back onto the shore. So horrific. It was such a devastating storm. I fear there will be another of its kind in my lifetime. I pray there won't be but I have had that fear since I heard about this one.
I have ridden out a few hurricanes in my 60+ years, including Katrina in 2005 and also Ida in 2021. We live north of New Orleans and did not get the floods from Katrina, but we did get the winds from both storms. Oh, my, when these storms are going on, you just want to know when it will stop. The all-day and/or night howling of the wind is so horrible, with no electricity, and you never know if your roof or house will start to come apart. Thankfully, we did well, but I can't imagine that man in the lighthouse and the horror of the wind and water and the possibilities of the structure blowing or washing away. For thousands there, that did happen to them. Just so tragic.
SEPTEMBER 8TH 1900 HAPPENED TO BE ON A SATURDAY.. ALOT OF CHILDREN WERE OUTSIDE PLAYING WHEN THEY NOTICED WATER STARTING TO COME DOWN THE STREET. THEY MADE LITTLE BOATS OUT OF TREE TWIGS AND WATCHED THEM FLOAT DOWN THE STREET. THE FUN TURNED INTO THIS HORRIFIC event.So sad.....

I live in Houston and me and my daughters always go visit Galveston cemetery.
Heartbreaking, I can't imagine 140 mph winds.. so many lives lost due to mother nature.. truly Heartbreaking about the people in the orphanage. May all those who passed away be resting in eternal peace 🕊⚘️🙏💔
Great story Ron. Btw, I love how all of these cemeteries are laid out so differently too. Love the little pathways in this one. Whenever I would tell my dad that I wish we lived somewhere else, he would always say that Chicago is the safest place to live. He said everywhere else you go, you have to deal with hurricanes, earthquakes, typhoons, rattlesnakes, bears, mountain lions etc. Now and then I think he may have had a point. What a horrible disaster this was. You sure have a way of bringing stories to life. I'm amazed that the pictures you inserted survived all of these years. Think of everything they've been through. I would hate to be in that lighthouse with a storm like that! RIP to all. Such a sad story ... all those kids 😥

I watch a rehab show on the Magnolia Network called Restoring Galveston and I am surprised how many homes from before 1900 survived the Hurricane. Michael and Ashley Cordry have rehabbed many of those old homes that survived including one that has a plague that said the home survived the hurricane and the plague was at the height of the water in and around the house.

One of the poor men who survived the Civil War, died in the 1900 hurricane on his birthday 9/8/1900. You are, once again, inanother one of my favorite cemeteries. My friends as I call them. Great work!

I love your channel. I was just there at this cemetery two days ago. I wonderful homeless man who also gives tours came up to us and gave us so much information and history. It was absolutely fascinating. This cemetery has been on my bucket list a while so I was happy not only to check it off my list but to also have had someone so knowledgeable show me the place. He didn’t ask but we paid him for his short tour.

Another location that I have my own hurricane experience. I never stayed in a place hit by a large Hurricane until Sept 2008 when Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and Houston TX. It was a very scary experience that O never wish to go through again. Leading up to Ike landing I saw the stories of Sept 1900 including an old news story that went into great depth about the 1900 storm. Galvaston prior to the 1900 Hurricane was being developed and promoted as the second key financial district for the US. And, things were goibg well until the Hurricane

Your voice is natural and easy to listen to. For those of us that love history you have lifelong fans. We don’t hav a very extended history here in good old Oz. But what we have is great as well. They say the Walmart is haunted by the orphanage occupants that were killed. Only 3 survived out of over 100. Isaac’s own wife and unborn child were killed
What a story, I hadn't really known much about this historic storm. I was so sad to hear about the poor children in the orphanage, oh my gosh. The photos show complete devastation. I'm sure that it haunted the families of the area for many years. May they all rest in peace 🌷 🙏

I lived on Galveston in the 80s and rode out a couple hurricanes there. Then moved to Western Washington and had a few earthquakes, now I live in tornado alley. I must be a glutton for punishment. Seriously though, All that pales in comparison to those braves souls who had to endure the pure hell of Galveston in Sept. 1900. RIP.
Alot was learned from that hurricane as was Katrina. Galveston is such a unique place, you should ride the ferry they have that goes over to Bolivar and see the old lighthouse. There is much haunted there.👻😵💫💯👍

I've never been through a hurricane but I've witnessed several tornadoes. The not knowing if your loved ones are ok is torturous. I can't imagine days of that. Rip to all the souls lost.

Jesus. I once saw a documentary, red the hurricanes of 1900. Frightening. Thank God we have the technology we have tdy. The alert system, shows what path, the storm will take & gives u enuff time to evacuate, and go to higher ground, or leave the city if they so choose.

Hello, Ron, I love your channel and how courteous and respectful that you are. I am hoping some day that you would be able to do a story of the Green Man (Raymond Robinson) who lived and died in western Pennsylvania. He was severely injured in a childhood electrical accident and would not go out in public as he was disfigured. They say he walked at night along a trail and railroad tunnel near my house and people who saw him said that he glowed green. Very sad story. God bless you.

I used to live in Galveston. There is another cemetery there closer to the ocean. I used to walk my children through it. There are stones there that simply say “Lost in the Storm” . No explanation needed.

I can't imagine how scared the people must have been. Just a horrific storm. I've heard about this storm but never realized how destructive it really was. Bless all those people who perished and the ones who lived. It would have been harder for them. Thank you, as always, Ron, for your awesome story telling.

Then went to see the park where the battle of San Jacinto , there is quite a lot of history , Good or bad . In America. Thank you for this one..Ps. Thank you Ron. I'm a pretty big, and strong guy, but I have always had a fear of the Ocean, and flooding. I couldn't imagine living through this type of flood, or a Tsunami like the one that hit Japan
I cannot imagine the horror of a hurricane coming for you, your family members your home and community! Those people are brave. Even though, as you said, they didn't have much of a choice.

Ron, thank you for telling us about this brave man. Such an amazing story about this incredibly brave man who survived the deadly hurricane. I remember Daddy telling me about the hurricane, the enormous carnage and death toll rising as the storm continued its path across the continent and out to the ocean far north, and the bodies from Galveston Island washing back onto the shore. So horrific. It was such a devastating storm. I fear there will be another of its kind in my lifetime. I pray there won't be but I have had that fear since I heard about this one.
I have ridden out a few hurricanes in my 60+ years, including Katrina in 2005 and also Ida in 2021. We live north of New Orleans and did not get the floods from Katrina, but we did get the winds from both storms. Oh, my, when these storms are going on, you just want to know when it will stop. The all-day and/or night howling of the wind is so horrible, with no electricity, and you never know if your roof or house will start to come apart. Thankfully, we did well, but I can't imagine that man in the lighthouse and the horror of the wind and water and the possibilities of the structure blowing or washing away. For thousands there, that did happen to them. Just so tragic.
SEPTEMBER 8TH 1900 HAPPENED TO BE ON A SATURDAY.. ALOT OF CHILDREN WERE OUTSIDE PLAYING WHEN THEY NOTICED WATER STARTING TO COME DOWN THE STREET. THEY MADE LITTLE BOATS OUT OF TREE TWIGS AND WATCHED THEM FLOAT DOWN THE STREET. THE FUN TURNED INTO THIS HORRIFIC event.So sad.....
