The 20 Vowel sounds are majorly divided into two categories (Monophthong-12 and Diphthong-8). Apart from the two broad divisions, a third category of vowel sounds that are not so much emphasized in English are the triphthongs otherwise called the triple sound. There are five triphthongs, however, we still say there are 20 vowel sounds based on convention.
