  • Roof rack is finally installed! Turned out to be a bit more of an ordeal than I expected, but worth it - so much extra room for activities up there.

    The pioneer platform on the backbone brackets looks great, I installed mine about 12 months ago, going through the same procedure, the only thing I did a little different is I fitted the bolts to the backbone mounting holes from the inside and up that way in time should bolts go a little loose easy to torque from the exterior rather than dropping roof liner down to torque bolts, it would have been nice for the Rhino people to suggest that to you, because they also state in the care and Maintenace to check all bolts periodically, great video and enjoy 😎

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do eh! So happy with how it's sitting - and glad I went down the Backbone route. Now there's an idea - would make checking them a little easier eh. Will keep an eye on the platform, I did have the feeling I might need to tighten stuff at some point though - not super keen to pull the roof lining off again

    only cons for rhino rack platform is the middle bars go same direction of vehicle, it means if you need accessories only with clamp type mount, you have to buy cross bar attachment, that is why I go for yakima

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair - I have used the under-tray bars (not quite sure what their real name is) to tie things down on the odd occasion. Not really what they're for, but does the trick. The Yakima gear is super nice too eh

    Bloody hell taking the roof lining down on a new car is daunting. I guess it's not as fiddly as taking apart a modern smartphone, where things don't quite fit right when put back together.
    Maybe I'll take the opportunity to run some extra cables up there.

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I put it off for a while - then just decided to jump into the deep end. It wasn't actually too hard - trickiest bit was lifting it back into place.
      Defo' run wires though, I regret not doing it. The spare holes aren't huge but sure you could get a few up there

    @alfredcathro5751 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the build mate, I've got an older style wagon and love the visibility from big back Windows, obviously this will be better than your lux but how do you find it for blindspots?? Presumably not a big issue with modern sensors and tech for parking etc??? Cheers

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate! It's been good fun so far!
      Long story short, part of the reason we waited so long for the Fortuner is that I wanted blind spot monitoring - Toyota finally added it in the MY22 model (no idea why it took so long). I reckon it's worse than the Hilux was, even with the tent, for blind spots - that pillar by the rear doors is huge. The tech sorts that fully though. I'm sure you'd get used to it... But still, wanted the tech. Our cheapo Kia from 2016 has it, haha
      Parking is easy, it's real short compared to a ute - and has parking sensors/reverse camera/360 camera which all works really well

      Will be doing a driveshaft spacer, apparently the Fortuner needs ones. Probably won't bother with a diff drop though, not planning on going too high in the front. Did ~80,000kms in my old Hilux without one, never had an issue

    Do you plan on a suspension upgrade after adding all the accessories?
    Would you be looking at a GVM upgrade, if required?

    Will appreciate your advice and point of view.

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Still waiting on suspension to arrive - got held up being shipped, as with everything 😅 going for a normal old 40mm lift with some springs that should suit the weight
      GVM isn’t a “thing” here in NZ, light vehicles never get put on weigh bridges etc. I’m going to try keep it under GVM, but no idea if I’ll succeed. As long as the suspension is setup correctly and it’s not tooo heavy I’m not worried

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      47kgs if using Toyota’s factory roof lack limit and a backbone system, far better than say a Hilux as it doesn’t get derated for offroad use. Toyota don’t provide a roof load limit for the Fortuner annoyingly though - so hard to get a “proper” number

      @@OverlandNZTV its weird that Rhino dont derate the carrying capacity when using the backbone system
      Hilux (as you know) has a roof load rating of 75kg.You think the Tuna might have a bit more as it has a bigger roof,obviosly being a wagon
      I could be wrong though

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Hillzy Eighty7 They did until recently - not sure what changed, but was part of the reason I went with a tray over just roof racks. It's a grey area with the Fortuner annoyingly - all it says in the manual is "Don't exceed 75kgs on the Toyota Luggage Carrier" (aka roof racks, which just clamp on to the rails) - given how niche replacing the factory stuff fully is, makes sense they don't give a number around that.
      But you're correct - more pillars, bigger area to spread load, I imagine you could chuck a lot of weight up there no issues... Just like many many Hilux's getting around NZ 😅
