In today's video, I try to install Adélie Linux on an iMac G4 2002. These iMacs have PowerPC processors and therefore do not support most modern distros of Linux, but certain distributions, like old versions of Debian and Ubuntu, as well as Adélie Linux, support the old PowerPC Macs. This is my first video back after nearly 10 months of mostly inactivity, so if you liked it, consider dropping me a like and subscribing to my channel!

Interesting to see you struggle as well, I have spend a number of days struggling as well to get any kind of PPC distro working on any of my G4 machines but all of them failed to get to a graphical desktop whatever kernel options I provided. I got Debian 7 running in text mode on my dual processor MDD and got the life disks of Adelie and Ubuntu Mate working but could not read the graphics screen to see what I did need to install it. Unfortunately MintPPC 11 is not around anymore as I saw on some old videos that that could deal with the graphics issues all these G4 machines seem to have i.e. PowerPC, iMac and iBook. So I gave up in the end. My G4’s run very well with Sorbet Leopard especially the dual processor MDD with 2 Gigs of RAM.

Don't you need to format the hard drive as HFS+ rather than HFS? When I boot from a live Lubuntu DVD and use G-Parted it won't let me format the hard drive as HFS+. It is greyed out. And it won't let me format an HFS partition bigger than 2 GB. The internal hard drive I am trying to format for an Adelie installation is 80GB. I want a 1GB partition for root and the rest for everything else. By the way, I am trying to install Adelie on a Blue and White Yosemite G3 with 1GB of RAM. That is the maximum RAM. It has the newer video chip on the mother board. I bought it new in late 1999. The bigger hard drive and DVD drive are not original.

It could be either HFS or HFS+, it doesn't matter that much, but Linux usually doesn't have the utility to format HFS+ partitions installed by default. For PowerPC you need an HFS or HFS+ partition mounted at /boot/grub for GRUB that's at least 256MB, and then any other partition for everything else.

@@DistrosProjects I have lubuntu on my white macbook (core2duo1gig ram) but it is so slow if I use the internet. Apart from that libreoffice or even python is just fine, even freecad works! But internet is hell.
