Installing Windows NT 4 on an iBook G3 Clamshell!
Hello everyone, and welcome back to my channel! After nearly a year of not posting, I am "back" for at least a bit. In this video, I install Windows NT 4.0 on an iBook G3 Clamshell from 1999. This is made possible by a custom boot loader/preboot environment for the little-known PowerPC port of Windows NT. Originally, this port was only targeting a narrow selection of machines from 1998, but currently it theoretically supports every PowerPC Mac from 1998 to 2005. However, due to the current lack of USB support, desktops and laptops past abut 2004 do not work correctly due to their use of (sometimes internal) USB keyboards and mice.

NEW METHOD: How to boot from USB on Most NewWorld PowerPC Macs!

It’s worth noting that I changed the title from “ANY PowerPC Mac” to “Most NewWorld PowerPC Macs” because when I made this video, I thought this worked on all PowerPC Macs because it worked on all the ones I had, spanning most of the PowerPC era. However, I have since found out that this does not appear to work on certain PowerPC Macs, specifically from around 2003-2004. Hello everyone, and wel...

I didn't start gaming really until 2020 when I turned 30 because of addiction. But all my shitty laptops, and a PC that I had for 10 years without even looking in it, from 2006 until around roughly 2014 had Ubuntu. I at least learned how to install it and uninstall windows and the difference when I had done that was *immense*. I'm not joking when I say that surfing and just existing on the shitty laptops with Ubuntu compared to Windows was at least 2 times faster in regards to everything. I did play some on the Ubuntu PC too, but only children of mana on a emulator through Wine. But I saw/see no reason at all to slow down your pc/laptop with windows if you only were to use it for surfing, downloading movies with Ktorrent or whatever I used, and using VLC to watch them. Everyone who can do it on Windows could do it on Ubuntu! Edit: I knew absolutely nothing about how to install stuff on Ubuntu when you needed to use terminal. It was highly usable anyway until you needed to use terminal for installation, then it's good if you have a friend who know how to do it lol. There are guides too but if you know absolutely nothing like I did then it was pretty annoying. Worth it though!

Ubuntu 14.04 was my first distro. I had customized it a LOT, and even used the command-line installer on a few machines. I had an Ubuntu Touch tablet that I used for my portable web-browsing station. However, after the "sudden change" mentioned in this video, stuff started changing in ways I didn't like. These were mostly small things, as I switched from Unity to XFCE (with a configuration similar to Unity, but customized to my liking) a while back already, but I had to manually intervene to change them back to how I like. Snaps were the final straw. It started when my calculator went from taking a few tenths of a second, to tens of seconds to launch. From there they just kept spreading to new applications! I eventually figured out that they were even effecting my boot time. I've since switched to MX Linux, as it's very similar to how I'd already customized my Ubuntu install, and all my problems have been fixed. The only remaining issue is that I don't really know what I'd recommend to new users anymore. The big advantage with Ubuntu is safety in numbers: if you have an issue, another Ubuntu user has also had, and solved, that issue. I'd say Linux Mint is probably the best option now, since it's desktop-focused, easy to use, and has a large user base.

enjoyed the video and it's a pretty decent historical perspective… I think you should change the title to "The rise and evolution of Ubuntu"... there is no fall and you're pissing people off. Another user expressed a desire to hear something about the origin of the name Ubuntu. That's actually very very cool name and I agree you should talk about it. There seems to be some kind of negative theme or mood about the video things about "a company" well I don't know you're getting a lot of LTS distribution for free while the same company focuses on server support to make money and enterprise? The desktop and development comes out of that and they give people jobs. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'm a noob to the space but going all in Linux in new career and 24.04 LTS is like "damn this has come a long way" since the last time I touched it in 2002. You sound like a smart young guy, run with this thing!

Fun thing about NT 4.0 on non-x86 architectures - it has x86 emulation! But only 16-bit, not 32-bit. So you can't run Windows NT 4.0-Intel apps, but you *CAN* run Windows 3.1 apps! this isn't quite true: MS wrote something called "wx86" for running 32-bit x86 PEs on RISC NT. However MS's emulator is quite slow, Insignia ported their one for PPC NT only and Motorola included that with the rest of wx86 in "Motorola SoftWindows 32 for PowerPC", which you can find on the Internet Archive. Additionally, there exists Word 6.0 and Excel 5.0 for PowerPC NT, although currently only Excel has been dumped. (basically there were two different releases of Word and Excel for NT, the earlier one is x86/Alpha/MIPS only, the later one was released with NT 3.51 and includes PowerPC version)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! 5:36 Never in my life have I heard someone so excited to see the Windows NT Setup screen. Must be a worlds first! Alongside installing NT to a Clamshell iBook G3. The Linux Open Firmware frame buffer does work! Just poorly. 13:05 Okay, maybe _this_ is the most excited anyone has been to see the Windows NT Setup screen. The input devices not only working, but working well, _and_ having things like control-click built into them is amazing. Like incredible attention to detail on Wack0's part. Nice choice of background music, btw. Canyon was a good surprise. Makes me wonder if something like Cuberite could be bade to run on this. I hope 2025 is a good year for you!

Linux' Open Firmware framebuffer has been broken since about 6.2 or 6.3, see bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217328 I admit I was definitely dramatic during this video, I was just in a good mood and was motivated despite also probably having COVID when I filmed this. I don't want to be in a bad mood all the time either. I feel like the stuff I've been doing with low level Windows made me even more excited as I know how difficult all this stuff was.

@DistrosProjects Very glad you were in a good mood! Sorry you probably had covid. Glad you're better now! And I didn't know the frame buffer was actually broken. This is what I get for not updating Gentoo on my iBook G4.

the control-click as RMB was basically *required* for me to implement since I'm personally testing purely on laptops with only a single mouse button
